I know a number of Thais who are graduates and many have good degrees. Their skill in English is in reading and writing, few are confident in speaking the language unless their work brings them into regular contact with falangs.

My life would be very different if I did not possess an understanding of Thai. When visiting my family I would feel very isolated if I could not understand what is going on. I know my tonal renditions are often way off but I seem to get by and my mispronunciation often causes merriment.

Several years ago I hired a minibus to take my Thai family out to a National Park, there were 12 altogether consisting of 6 adults and the rest were children we were accompanied my a formidable 80 something year old matriarch of the family my mother in law.
When I was asked to pay 10 times more for my entry she was fuming and berated the park attendants but all to no avail. Although I offered to pay the extortionate price she was adamant that I would not and consequently none of us entered the park.

The biggest downer for me in a beer bar, is the incessant boom, boom, boom, which kills any conversation,
I have to agree 100% . A bar playing music at a reasonable level which allows conversation is my ideal. Unfortunately not too many of them around.

Thanks for the pictures, just showing me what I am missing.

Leave the beach walkers alone.
I regularly use Beach Road at night on my way home and these lovely beach walkers constantly tell me just how handsome and desirable I am.
Virtues of honesty should not be punished.

Got to agree that the food at both the Pig and Queen Vics is good. But for me the best breakfast is at Jimmy Macs on soi 6, and the view is very good as well.
P.S. heads are clean.
I don't want to learn local language
