  1. Drove up to Korat this weekend to visit a friend. We met at the Irish Pub next to the Sima Tani (sp?) hotel. The place is nicely decorated, decked out with first class fixtures and has a great sound system and a couple of pool tables.

The owner says that she recently reopened after a long hiatus which was the result of the death of her husband. At the moment she's only serving drinks but I did see a food menu as well.

The place was dead empty on Friday evening. (Admittedly, we were there quite early.) But, it looks like a nice place to hang out. Small bottles of Chang and Tiger were 65 baht with other brands a bit more pricey.

Since Stickman says that you guys are a bunch of hopeless alcoholics I expected to see a few other patrons. So, where do you drink? And, if not the Irish Pub, why not?

  2. My Mother likes to say that boredom is a disease of the unintelligent and uncreative.

In my opinion if you're bored, it's your own fault; especially in this day and age when diversions and entertainments galore are literally at your fingertips: Internet, Cable or Satellite TV, books, DVD's, music, etc.

Walk out your front door and there's a whole world waiting for you. Every time I walk the short block from my residence to my favorite restaurant I see new and interesting things I hadn't noticed before.

There are not enough minutes in the day for me to do everything I'd like to do.

  3. I wear one with Buddha in the "Subduing Mara" (pang man wichai) gesture.

I don't wear this amulet for good luck or for protection, but to remind myself of the importance of avoiding the temptations of riches, power, sensual pleasure, etc.

I know I'll never actually defeat Mara, but perhaps this constant reminder will help me keep her at bay....

  4. Travel agent was able to make a reservation for BKK/LAX/BKK in April, but unable to quote a price. Current Eva prices are valid through March 15th. Prices for travel ex-BKK after that date have yet to be established by Eva.

Seems crazy to discourage travelers who want to make an advance purchase on line.

  5. There is definitly too much down time between plays in American Football. Boring to watch a live event.

US Football comes across great on TV. Slo mo replays etc during the breaks.

Soccer may be better watched live, although I don't think I want to be in the stands with all the idiotic fans.

You're absolutely right. TV and technology turned US football into an exciting, intellectual game. I remember when "instant replays" and "slo-mo" were first introduced; completely changed the nature of the game.

  6. I just plugged in Feb 10 and return Feb 26 on BKK/LAX/BKK economy and flights came up. My first try on an earlier February departure date was full outbound. I went to the confirm page with full itinerary and price details so all appears ok. This was using http://www.evaair.com/html/b2c/english/

Interesting, when I plugged in your dates I got the same thing: available seats.

When I tried some January dates, I get full flights.

But when I do BKK/LAX/BKK for April/May I get the strange error message.

Can you try outbound April 20 returning May 16? Travelocity indicates availability for those dates, but the EVA site says: "Sorry! The flights you chose is not provided now. Please select alternative flights again. Thank you!"

    TIA

  7. It sounds as though that particular flight is now permanently cancelled.

Nope, flights are available via Travelocity and shown in EVA's online schedule, it's just that you can't book online but get the error message I cited above.

Anyone else booked a flight online at EVA's web site in the last few days?

  8. GF just bought the January issued of "English World" magazine. Somehow, every instance of the letter pair "fi" is missing. For example, "first" is rendered as "rst", "firms" is "rms" and "office" is printed "ofce".

I imagine this must be driving lots of English language students crazy....

    :o:D:D

I suspect someone was attempting to change the "fi" pair into it's ligature for typesetting purposes but forgot to include the ligature when doing the search and replace.

I wonder which proofreader will get the blame?

  9. Trying to book a rt on Eva BKK/LAX/BKK. No matter what dates or class of service I pick I get the following message:

"Sorry! The flights you chose is not provided now. Please select alternative flights again. Thank you!"

  10. .Best advice is to read for yourself and make up your own mind. There are some excellent recommendations in this thread, eg "Siam Mapped".

Well put. "Siam Mapped" is an excellent read. But, I must admit that I have always been enormously entertained by Chris Moore's books.

A book doesn't have to be well-written to be entertaining any more than a friend has to be well-spoken to be a good companion.
