And where most of the foreigners contribute more taxes than the local Thais do I guess the percentage would be much higher if they include us the here-for-good-expats in the equation

How do most of the foreigners contribute more tax than local Thais? While I do realise many Thais pay little or no tax, I would have thought most foreigners were either retired, a tourist or working illegally and therefore not paying tax at all...

Just to reiterate - exchanging THB for GBP, and I guess for Euro, outside Thailand is very expensive. 100K Baht is not a lot, but you might be at least 50Euro short compared with exchanging it in Thailand and bringing, or transferring, the money. So unless you really want Baht in Europe, or can get a private deal with e.g. future tourists, exchange it here.

Interesting point thankyou.... you may have helped me here also

I'm heading to Australia next week and also have 100k in cash. I was planning to just exchange it on arrival but from what you're saying I may get a better deal by exchanging it in BKK before leaving.

Have I undersood you correctly? Cheers

So they go to the computer and generate a list of where the foreigners live.

They should be able to see that their visas are up to date and a valid TM30 is on file with immigration so they then decide to visit the address, to check what ?

They already know the foreigner has complied with all the regulations based on their computer records.

Or perhaps they're only visiting foreigners who they know have not complied with all the rules, like those who don't have a TM30 against their record in the immigration databases - that would make more sense.

    Com.. poo.. tar?

I thought they carved the immigration records into stone tablets here?

  4. Normal for Thailand and unacceptable for sure... but hang on let's not forget two things here...

    1) bus drivers in cities all around the world rank very high in terms of occupational stress and mental health

    (http://www.busvic.asn.au/images/uploads/links/A_Review_of_Mental_Health_and_Well_Being_of_the_Bus_and_Coach_Industry_-_January_2015.pdf)... and

    2) when was the last time you saw a Thai driver 'let someone in' on the road?

Yeah the guy needs to get off the road and be suspended, but I argue that the root cause is well beyond this one driver. Do you want his job?

I've always said that simply telling people not to litter is not enough.

People have to be taught 'why' littering is bad. And it's not as simple as it's ugly and bad for the environment. There's so much more to it that will help you connect other dots. The bigger picture.

yep and appropriate punishment with a functioning police/legal system too

  6. Rip off maybe (probably?)... but pricing labels online/offline are often wrong

Ok sure my example isn't $34k but yesterday in Tesco I bought Mach3 Blades which had three facings on the shelf with three different prices (230, 440, 520). My understanding is that in Australia if the item is labelled incorrectly, you pay the labelled price (my mate manages a bunnings store and said something about a similar big screw-up once over power tools).

So in short... yep, good on the guy for fighting it... he should win!

Oh you will experience rampant unemployment if your returning home at 40-70 as an ex expat. Just tune into the Pattaya forums for a bit and ask about the lady boy wallet grab, surprised you never heard of it.

yep heard of it, just never experienced it because I tend to avoid such places

i guess I am lucky on the employment front also... but yep I do get your point though, can be tough for some (many?), thankfully doesn't apply to me though
