You are most welcome.  Not only was the info directly from their website, the source is about as credible as you can get, The Overseas Security Advisory Council of  the US Department of State's Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS)

The poster that  that called validated information from this trustworthy source  "fear mongering" is being very irresponsible.  Not sure why he is so focused on gossip and hearsay and refuses to address facts.

Excellent source and a must read for anyone considering a move, talk and a step down.

In comparison to Thailand I wonder why anyone would ever dream about relocating unless they are desperate.

Not sure where Equador is but the country of Ecuador has an extremely high crime rate with travel advisories from many countries.

Instead of fake news, at least post some independently verifiable data to back up your claims.  Here, let me show you how it is done.

    Excerpts (direct quotes from website)

There is serious risk from crime in Quito. Crime is a severe problem throughout Ecuador.,

Pickpocketing, purse snatching, robbery, and theft of travel documents are the crimes most commonly committed

Pickpockets and other petty thieves are particularly active in tourist areas, airports, restaurants, bus terminals, public markets, and grocery stores, and on public transportation and crowded streets. Criminals frequently target backpackers and travelers carrying laptop bags for robbery.

Violent crime has remained high over the last few years, with U.S. citizens reporting crimes that include armed assault, robbery, sexual assault, home invasion, and, homicide.

Armed or violent robbery can occur anywhere in Ecuador. In some cases, robbers have used motorcycles to approach their victims and flee the scene. Criminals have robbed tourists at gunpoint on beaches and along hiking trails. Many robberies take place on/around public transportation, particularly buses. Criminals rob those who have just finished using ATMs or exited banks.

Robberies and assaults against taxi passengers (secuestro express) present a significant safety concern, especially in Guayaquil and Manta; they have occurred in Quito as well.

Carjacking or thefts from a vehicle have occurred while stopped at intersections.

Incidents of sexual assault and rape continue with frequency, including in well-traveled tourist areas.

Crime occurs throughout Quito; there are no low-crime areas.

    Excellent post.

    Thanks for sharing the link.

Crime is rampant in that part of the world, a mega turn off.

Almost this entire thread has been a myth, filled with misinformation, unsubstantiated nonsense, and hearsay, but I think that was the whole point in order to keep it going.   How about some more Mexican food videos, haven't had any of those for a few pages now?

    +1

On the topic of Mexican food, what's the Taco Bell experience like in Mexico ?

To make it Latin America centric topic.  How much more would you need to retire in Latin America than your home country?

    I can answer that.

To retire in LATAM I figure my monthly spend would be 3.75638% less than my spend in Thailand and 11.32822% less than my home country.

    Hope that helps ????

What blows the budget is the private security guards for the compound and bullet proof glass for the car.

YES - don't move to Latin America, Thailand is great!

After thorough research i have conducted for years, this is my findings...

Any questions pls ask, i'll be more than happy to answer.

    Thank you.

I'm curious, in Thailand I have encountered a few clazee farangs, I believe some should be medicated.

Would you say LATAM attracts more of these mental misfits or same same as Thailand ?

Ok after 60 pages, time to wrap this thread up.  Let me summarize.  A bunch of chicken-hearted expats who have zero intentions of relocating to Latin America want to instead post a bunch of pictures about Mexican food while discussing healthcare.  Misery truly does love company!

If someone is truly interested in moving they will find accurate information and it ain't here.

The 5 reasons that people leave Thailand.

    1, money

    2, money

    3, money

    4, money

    5.health..broken heart

Whats changed ? put your 800k or 65k in and your sweet. Or are you somehow being targeted by thais? in which case you should look at your own behavior. The rest of us live in peace without any more drama than anywhere else.

Yep and the rest is just noise.

Expats in Thailand considering moving to Latin America?

Don't you mean Jingthing and a few Americans are thinking about it?

Why don't you stop thinking about it and just do it. You've had long enough to think about it.

Not a chance I'd step foot anywhere near the entire region, been there on biz and visiting my family (who are getting the hell out.)
Escobar wannabes, express kidnappings, scopolamine, armed gangs, fake cops, terrorism threats, street crime, extortion, muggings, pickpockets, don’t go out at night, drugs, avoid using your cell phone in public, political instability and the list goes on and on and on.

Before moving here 3 yrs ago I lived in Colombia for 5 yrs.  Ecuador for 2 yrs. And Panama , Mexico , Costa Rica as well.  I came here to los after a yr. in Cambodia.  And I'll be honest the moment I stepped off the plane i didn't  feel welcome. In time i  learned and that foreigners arent really liked here esp caucasion. They are tolerated.  BUT THEIR MONEY IS VERY WELCOME. Its obvious by the b.s games , hoops and hurdles  immigration is constantly pulling . I know at least ten people who have left and more that are packing including myself.. of course im gonna miss this wonderful Chiang Mai weather

Leaving for vietnam for a few months and then  Oaxaca Mexico.. In Mexico /Panama/Ecuador/ Colombia you dont have to deal with this garbage and I can keep MY money where I WANT to.

You sound like my brothe, however he did it the other way. He and his Colombian partner met in Hong Kong and then moved to Vietnam, back to Colombia (hated it), Panama (acceptable) & Costa Rica for the last 4 years. He would actually stay there however his partner is sick and tired of Central and South America.

Their best friends own a small B&B in Morocco (Tangier's) and they've spent the last 3 months there and absolutely love it. There is a new flight from Miami to Casablanca and they plan on returning to Costa Rica and making the move in mid-August. Easy visas and foreigners welcomed.

He has been to Thailand a few times and has the same opinion, money money money money.

All his topics are pants, if he’s not happy with replies he just tells people not to bother posting.

If people encourage him he just waffles on more ( in this case to places he’s not going to go )

    Very perculiar.

Yep very odd, I dared to say a lot of bullying happens and guess what ?

    I got a PM saying he's doesn't appreciate being called a bully.

    555555555

Come to think of it, doesn't sending a PM like that constitute bullying ?

From the tone of your comment, you probably had very little compassion to start with. Just another "if you don't like it here you ought to leave" post.

I was dragged here kicking and screaming with my Thai wife and our kids to sell her family business. I'll be the one leading the parade to get the hell out of here lol. My wife has been living abroad for almost 30 years and she hates the place more than the rest of us. She seldom leaves and we are counting the days until we exit.

In 27 years of marriage I managed to avoid the place like the plague, the kids only came twice and it's been super hard on them as they don't speak a word of Thai, they are all fluent in 3 languages but refuse to learn Thai. Only one ventures out to Uni, the eldest plays golf everyday the others watch TV.

In terms of losing compassion - absolutely, I lost compassion for local expats a long time ago. I can now see first hand that some of the folks here are not prepared for retirement. Sadly I think a lot here don't have a pot to piss in and the end is coming for them - their poor judgement not mine.

So yes if you don't like it or can't afford it go home and PLEASE take me with you lol

Jeez .. its getting complicated. One of my cunning plans to be considered was to keep 800,000 baht permanently in my Thai bank just to renew my visa every year. And make a Will in Thailand to benefit my son in the UK.  But I just read some posters in this topic say its difficult for THEM to take out money .. so what chance would my son have of getting Kbank to send him 800,000 baht to the UK ... direct or via the lawyers I get to do the will ..... ? Anyone got experience of that situation ? A will just for cash to be sent overseas a waste ?

Maybe spending it after visa renewal and top up 9 months later more betterer.

I guess he could fly here for a few holidays with 800,000 spending money waiting that he cant get sent to him in UK.  But not easy for him me thinks. If I mention wills and me going one day he gets tearful  .. ah somebody likes me ???? .. so coming here retracing his dads steps spooky/difficult.

One option may be to obtain two ATM cards from BKK Bank - I have one for domestic withdrawals and one for international. Give your son the international card & PIN. Both work BTW but I think there is a 200 baht per card charge per year.

Luckily for me I hope to not be in Thailand much longer as we only came here to close my wife's family business and for our youngest to finish University. I've never liked the place and am counting the days. I did the 800k because frankly I didn't want the embassy or a Thai IO to see any paperwork with my net worth for the monthly option.

I will probably just withdraw it and walk to Dee Money and transfer it offshore. Your son can send money via them if he's in Thailand. (I think, not sure if they allow tourists to send or not - worth checking)

I met a guy some time ago and he was told by his late Father he had done a Thai Will but it disappeared (burnt by the Thai GF most likely)  he was in a real mess trying to sell his Father's condo. Hired a couple of lawyers to handle it but it seemed like a real nightmare.
