Does anyone know whether you require a work permit in Malaysia to work online on a pc or laptop from home. All the work would be offshore.
Or is it something nobody worries about?
Thanks.

Hi Folks, I feel humbled that some of you miss me.....????
I am as well as can be expected considering my multiple medical conditions, and am enjoying life in rural Rutland with my wife and step daughter.
Apologies for the long silence on my blog. It's part procrastination, part trying to decide whether to wrap it up completely, part lack of anything really interesting to write about, and part too busy????... (I guess that's stretching it a bit). Anyway having made my excuses, I will definitely try to post a blog sometime soon.
ThaiPauly - I have not had any email from you recently. I have checked my spam and nothing there. Can you please resend and make sure you have my correct email.
Cheers to everyone in sunny Pattaya.

Sorry, you can see I made that post over a year ago. I have been back in the UK for 10 months and the lady, who is my wife, is winging her way across the world to join me at this very moment.....

Sorry, I sold it a few days before leaving Thailand.

I quote out a few numbers from my tax returns which I am in the process of re-filing and I am asked for more and more personal information. Probably shouldn't have
If I told you what I did, you would ask me for who, where and when, and I am not about to spend my Sunday trying to explain what I did to earn such a high salary.
As I said many posts ago, it is all in my blogs and books (which are available on Amazon). If you are that interested, spend a little time to research it. You would even find out about my car if you read my blogs carefully.
Maybe it's time to close this thread, Mods, as it seems to have run its course. I'm now gone, and won't be back. Thanks again to all those who have wished me well.

Hmm… just a few random points…
1. I never claimed I was skint – read my posts – I simply don't have enough money remain in Thailand and take care of my family.2. I don't believe I am paranoid about the eroding situation in Thailand, although I personally have never, ever, had one moment of trouble from Thais, or anyone else for that matter. Nevertheless, Thailand certainly isn't the same place it was, and IMHO the writing is on the wall. We shall see.
3. As for freeloading on the British government… well, let me see… the last year I worked was 1999/200, and for that tax year I paid £75,886 in tax; the following year, although I was retired, I was still on the payroll and paid £132,864 in tax. In 2002 I paid £67,561 tax and in 2003 I paid £55,631.
I continued to pay similar, substantial amounts of tax until 2006 when I went off the payroll. After that, the tax payments slowly tapered down even though during all this time I was living in Thailand. I would estimate that in the 21st century I have paid over ½ million pounds in tax and that doesn't include my, and my employer's, NIC contributions.
I was a high earner for many years, so in my last 20 years of work, it is not unreasonable to assume I contributed more than £1 million to the UK Exchequer during my working life.
I have never had a major operation in the UK and in any case I always had private health care, and for the past 15 years I haven't taken a dime from the British government and my state pension has been frozen which saved them a few bob.In my view, I'm entitled to get a bit back, now I am in my 70's and my health is not great. But I guess we are all entitled to our opinions.
4. Anyone who psychoanalyses somebody on the basis of what he reads in an internet forum - especially someone who is not medically qualified - probably needs to look to look hard at himself. For the record, I have suffered from bouts of depression for most of my life. I first saw a psychiatrist in the UK some 50 years ago, and had some very useful sessions with two different therapists in Thailand when I was battling the demon booze.
I would never try to claim I am 100% 'normal' - whatever 'normal' may mean, and I accept that someone who marries 6 times and makes and loses several fortunes may have an odd screw loose....
But I had a lot of fun along the way - probably more than many - and I'm still in there fighting for me and mine...

On the positive side:
I've registered with a doctor, applied for a free bus pass, got my state pension upgraded…
Settled in nicely at my daughter's place in Oakham…
No worries about expat TV and live streams from the UK etc. I've got so many channels it's difficult to choose. I've watched Spurs play twice live on Sky Sports (Spurs fan for over 60 years) including the 6-1 drubbing of Leicester last night…
On the negative side:
It's been raining ever since I arrived last Saturday. Before that, they were having a drought…
It's not very warm, about 17 degrees tops and dropping to 6 and night, and my feet are cold all the time, despite wearing two pairs of socks…
My box which was airfreighted door to door last Thursday has been stuck in customs at DHL's East Midlands depot since last Sunday, with no news on when it will be released…
It will take a while to adjust to my new life, and I'm taking it one step at a time. One week is not very long in the general scheme of things and I have the whole summer ahead of me. When it stops raining I might go for a walk – something I could only do at sunset in Thailand because it was so bloody hot.More updates later, and thanks again everyone for your good wishes and caring about what happens to a washed out old codger.

Looks like I jumped ship at exactly the right time.
I used Expat TV to watch all the UK shows, news etc. But I never paid more than three months in advance as I knew it was vaguely illegal.
Now I'm back in Blighty I have so many channels I don't know where to start.... including Sky sports...

The answer doesn't quite apply to your issue (as they're talking about app language), but probably does confirm some phone functionality is based on the Samsung account origin.
Take a look at your Samsung account online and see if there is a way to BACKUP your phone data. Then see if the phone will allow you to log into (switch to) another Samsung account. Maybe most of the user data on the phone will remain and be inheritable to the new Samsung (UK-based) account.
One of the things I dread about smart phones is running into an issue where the solution involves a full Factory Reset. Ugh.
Yes, that what worries me, so I've decided to give up - spent too much time on this already.
-
Gopro, I did that (change sim names and icons), doesn't make any difference to the login screen - still shows home as Thai time.
-
I just received a reply from Samsung in Thai and bad English.
They have told me that the only way I can change my Home country is to open a new or change my Samsung account, which is pretty much what I thought. They said that I must do this on wifi and not from my Thai sim card.
I was going to do this except I received a warning on the phone that if I changed my account, I might be locked out of the phone unless I deactivated the lock-out first. I couldn't see clearly how to do this and the last thing I want is to be locked out of my phone, so basically I've given up.
But at least I understand the reason... sort of....
Here is what Samsung said:
The Galaxy apps's language is depending on Samsung account's country if your Samsung account is Thailand so Galaxy apps is Thai.
So if you would like to change Galaxy app to english you need to sign in with another Samsung account(other country accont)
You can re-sign up Samsung account but don't use internet from Thai SIM card please use WIFI to Sign up then you can select the country for your new Samsung acount. If use internet from Thai SIM card the system will select Thailand automatically. -

Your phone displays ROAMING because your phone has 2 SIM cards, EE and AIS. You are roaming on AIS, as indicated in your Status Bar.
Have you tried physically swapping the SIM positions, or just remove the AIS SIM temporarily and see what happens
I had previously tried swapping them round, but it made no difference, so as you suggested, I took the Thai Sim out, and the login screen just showed Uk time.
When I re-inserted the Thai sim in slot 2, the phone still showed Home as Thailand and roaming as UK. I even went into the device Samsung account in settings and made sure the registered phone number was the UK sim number, but the phone still shows 'home' as Thailand. I have also done a master wipe of the cache.
It's no longer a big deal - I will live with it. Unfortunately, I need the Thai sIm to handle otp's for my Thai bank account, Otherwise, I would leave it out.

If you turn on "Automatic Date and Time" (post 3) does it make any odds?
I've tried both. It was on auto, I just switched to manual to show you the settings.
Now I've got the weather and time to work, by using a downloaded widget instead of the one that came with the phone. (which still shows Bangkok time etc.) on the home screen, I'm nearly there. But I can't seem to do anything about the Roaming and Home time on the login/unlock screen.
-
I've found another weather app/widget which works fine. So it's just the "pre-home" screen that won't change to UK.
-
BTW I can access all Uk apps through the play store without doing anything, although I do recall clearing the cache some time ago when I first had this issue with Home and Roaming.
-
You don't seem to follow that the screen print that shows "Home" time and "roaming time" is not the home screen. It is the "power on 'screen before I have swiped and done my security to get to the home screen. I cannot control anything on this screen except the background wallpaper. It still shows me as having my Home in Thailand and roaming in England.
As far as the weather widget is concerned, I have removed it before and then reinstalled it - still shows Bangkok weather and time. Usually, when I move around Thailand it automatically changes the weather to the town or area I am in. My previous phone - a Note 2 -showed UK weather when I visited England, so this is all very odd.
There is something in the phone which has programmed its home as Thailand, but there must be a way to change it.

Settings> date and time> set time zone.
Alter the clock-weather widget settings from the theme setup of whichever theme you are using (generally a long push on a blank part of the home screen).
For the Play Store, as you have permanently left Thailand: Settings> apps> application manager> Google Play Store> Force stop> + then Storage> Clear Data + Clear Cache.Restart the Play Store to have access to UK apps.
Thanks, I wish it was that easy.
Tried all that and nothing works -it still defaults back toThai time and Bangkok weather - even though I didn't live in Bangkok, The phone carries two sets of times - but shows Thailand as my home time, and UK as my roaming time. If you look at the screen print I posted before, you can see the UK time in the top right-hand corner.
The time and zone settings are set to UK zone and time, but it doesn't make any difference. (see screen print) I'm almost certain it is tied up with my account settings (Google). I have gone into my Google account profile, changed the phone number to Uk, but cannot find any setting to change the "Home" from Thailand to UK. Any more ideas? -
I have a Samsung J7 Prime phone, bought in Thailand, and I have just relocated back to the UK.
The phone screen saver shows me 'roaming' in the UK with the local UK time, along with home time as Thai time. (see pic).
The Home screen shows Thai time and Bangkok weather. (see pic)
I cannot find any way to change this info to UK. I think it is connected to my account on Google, but I have gone into the settings and cannot find any way to change my 'home' to UK.
I have even sent a query to Samsung from my Phone 'help' screen and they have replied to say they are looking into it….
Can anyone throw any light on this?
Thanks

Seems like you still have a lot to learn at 73.
If you think the OP and your list are the only two choices, with nothing at all inbetween....typical poor attempt to quash facts or a logical argument by citing a clear rediculous case as the only alternative.

Seems to me you need a sense of humour bi-pass...

Yes, you are right. Looks like they've gone for good. They do have BBC News now which they didn't have before on the basic subscription- not to be confused with BBC World News.

I only signed up and paid a year up front last week :-(
Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa ConnectI never totally trusted it and only paid on a quarterly basis, which meant the most I would be out of pocket was 1740 Baht if it crashed the day after I paid.
I hope for your sake it is back up running soon.

I used to subscribe to UK TV and then switched when they were taken over by Thai Expat TV. I continued to use the old UK TV platform for years until they told me that I would have to change. But I never deleted the old UK TV platform.... and it still works fine, even though Expat TV told me it would be shut down.
So by some weird and wonderful quirk of fate, I can still watch all the Tv programmes courtesy UK TV. For how long, who knows? So whatever is going on with legalities and servers, my old UK TV set-up is still running.
But what do I care?
I'm leaving tomorrow...
-
After using UK TV and Expat TV for years, this is the first time I've ever had any problems logging in.
I have tried repeatedly, but each time I'm told it cannot find my server and asks me to check my internet connection – which is perfectly OK.
Good job I never deleted the old UK TV set up, as it still works!!! God knows how or why. It's also a good job I'm leaving tomorrow….
Good job I'm leaving tomorrow.... but maybe someone at Expat TV got wind of it and cut me off.... but I'm paid up till next month!
Digital Nomads in Malaysia - do you need work permit?
in Malaysia General Chat
Posted
Not really. It seems that there a quite a few people doing this in Malasia, and there are even adverts for places where digital nomads gather and work. So I can only conclude that it is OK, but don't shout out from the rooftops that you are one.
A bit like Thailand, but there it is a bit stricter - if you all gather at a bar with wifi and laptops, be prepared for police harrassment.
