  1. Continuing thread. Cigna replied and advised that it is entirely up to you which hospital you go to regardless of cost. So as I already had an appointment for surgery at Nontavej hospital which quoted the cheaper cost of Tb 190,000 I decided to stick with them as time is of the essence for retinal corrective surgery, I had the surgery 3rd of January so now writing this with one eye. The surgery was not one hour outpatient. The pre op was 3 hours and actual theater time was two hours. An initial communication problem on that point. I had to stay in the hospital for four nights. Before discharge I was presented with the bill. It turns out the Tb 190,000 was a deposit only and the actual bill was just under Tb 160,000 including take home meds. A nice surprise.I have to go back to Nontavej on Saturday for follow up. Not sure if that is already included in the price already paid. I kept Cigna in the loop and they said keep all my invoices and submit when I am ready via scan attachments to e mail and they settle payment with 5 days. Lets see so to speak.

  2. Woke Christmas day morning with a detached retina (not trauma induced - degeneration was the reason given). Went to Nonthavej hospital eye center Nam Wong Wan. Quoted Tb 190,000 for a 1-hour outpatient op. A tad expensive I thought. They don't have direct billing with Cigna. Now waiting for an estimate from World Medical hospital who do have direct billing with Cigna, to compare. Policy renewal due in February. Lets see.

  3. Great news. Glad to see Thailand taking a very positive lead on this. Sick people should have the human "right to try" alternatives and non-mainstream pharma companies should have the right to research and develop this. I have said it before and I will say it again here.... How can it be that the big mainstream pharma companies can monopolise the treatment of illnesses with such drugs as opiate based drugs and chemotherapies that can have harmful side effects and can be addictive? Maybe they like it that way!!! And, maybe certain governments also like it that way!!! It is no secret opium production finances wars, is it?

  4. I am in the same position as you DUS. I have decided to go with Cigna but juggling the deductible and Cost Share is an exercise in risk assessment. My broker has quoted me

Cigna Global Silver  US$2,726.52 with $ 750 deductible (0% cost share ($0 out of pocket max)). I am assuming the deductible is an annual limit I have to pay before Cigna will entertain a claim? But I am thinking it is too high if i have to have any treatment. I am 61 so  its horses for courses, as they say. But this blog has been very informative and useful guys, so thanks for that. As we get older we may want to keep deductibles and cost share fairly low as the risk of claims increases. But do not forget as we get older insurers hike up the annual premiums as well. My Cigna brokers comment was "you can always deny their policy upon rate up if you do not agree with it. " presumably, this means cancel the policy! , which obviously would be a bad move as we get older. Like you DUS I have to think about the risks and likelihood of making a claim.

  5. I am also shopping around for health insurance. Has anyone heard of or holds a policy with Thailand Ultracare "underwritten and administered in Thailand by Safety Insurance Public Company Ltd. (Company Registration. Number 0107536000854). The company is authorised and regulated by the Thailand Office of Insurance Commission, Ministry of Finance." I was requesting a quote from Aetna (now in lieu of BUPA) in London the broker there transferred me to broker here in TL.  But my Artna quotation became a quotation from Thailand Utracare. If anyone has a policy and used the service I would be interested to hear what they are like.

  8. How is it opiate  palliative drugs can be legally prescribed by medical professionals, but Cannabinoid drugs which carry a possibility of cure or control for various medical conditions cannot be prescribed by medical professionals. Lets hope Thailand and Thai pharma companies can take the lead in Asia on this issue. There are proven facts that it is effective. It is also of interest how such medicinal compounds were made freely available to young American troops in the Indochina wars for "recreational" and "palliative" purposes. Lets move forward on this issue.

  9. hear hear. We do not know what happened to the owners do we? Did they leave for good, bad or sad reasons.? Did they die?

    It is a sad story.

Something equally as sad I would like to share is, my wife and I were recently driving back from up country in the jazz and came across a pair of adult monitor lizards who never made it across the fast lane to the rainwater ditch in the middle of the road. I think a few drivers were moved to silence and ease off the gas.

  10. It would be interesting to have a survey to find out who actually designed all the so called iconic buildings and similar landmark buildings in BKK. I have worked on less significant projects in BKK designed by British architectural firms, British Council schools for one. If Thailand is becoming so officially xenophobic, why then do they not stop sending their kids to the UK, Europe the states etc... to be educated?

  11. This topic is about proof of life to get your uk pension paid into your thai bank account, correct?

I am close but not there yet 59.

Why can't the bank officer just check if you have a pulse. There are loads of guys in Cambodia without one and they don't seem to have any problems.
