Some plants take a bit of searching for !!! I cannot remember where I first found my Plumbago,  I have made cuttings to increase my plant count...  not that difficult to do....

Picture needed to take around the nurseries... it could mean headed to some of the nurseries south of Nathon...

Finding an English speaking gardener, is not always easy.... but I believe the lady who runs the nursery near Plai Leam Temple will do "house calls" it would be worth asking if she would come by an try and help!... she may have a crew to do stuff like that... I have only heard that, but never met her....

I don't think you'll find grass seed anywhere! It seems to be restricted to golf courses and turf farms... (done to protect rice paddies around Thailand I believe. )

The wide bladed Malay grass should work for shady areas,  you could buy a few pieces of turf and make small plugs every 9 inches or so... will quickly fill in.... But if soil is really sandy it would help to add some organic soil and mix in... larger quantities at the soil place on the Ghost Road... One or perhaps 2 kms from the bigger 7-11 in Ban Rak...

Round up is the only herbicide that will kill broad leaf plants here... make sure to cut off flowers or seed heads, as it takes about 2 weeks to kill the whole plant (roots) !! .....it too will kill everything, it is not a selective herbicide you would find in "the west"... carefully spot spraying can work if you are careful ...

Another plant that is quite attractive in pots is Coleus .... but one needs to make new cuttings every once in a while, they root really easily. OK in full sun here too!

Wow!!  Thanks again.  I live on the ghost road and I'm moving to Plai Leam so It should be easy for me to find the things I need.

I'm hoping to have a beautiful garden soon to match the very traditional 80yr old Thai house.

Just about anything will grow in pots... I would dump out every thing and change the soil.. buy some of the bagged soil most nurseries have, usually 3 bags / 100 baht... I generally add some sharp sand, (easily found on the side of many roads!.. do not use beach sand.... )  Plants in nurseries are generally all pot grown...

As for adding pictures, well that could go on and on...  being medium sized pots I would avoid plants that get too large in a short period of time.... Perhaps take pictures of plants you see and like and take  to the nurseries... show the size pots you will be using!

Here is a few examples of plants that bloom for long periods and easy to grow....

If you want some thing low,  Portulaca comes in many colours  & is really easy to grow and flowers most of the year... but does need splitting and re potting perhaps once or twice a year... (really easy to do!)...

    Portulaca... sun loving!

Plumbago .... around 2 to 2.5 feet high... sheer back occasionally. Blooms most of the year...more sun than shade!  May take some hunting around to find!

Hibiscus should be OK for a few years...

Really it is an endless list..... just observe plants in pots around homes and shops!

Just make sure during hot weather to water plants  twice a day, and fertilize every two or three months!

    Hope that helps a little!

Thank you very much.  I was hoping for plumbago but I have not seen it yet.  Do you know of a good gardener who can speak English and knows the local plants?  I'm moving into a house with a large yard that has been left unattended for a while.  I really know nothing about the local trees and shrubs.  Just need some advice on what to cut, what to take out, and what to leave alone.  Also is there any way of buying grass seeds for shade areas?  There is no grass under the trees, only sandy soil.  And the grass that I have is also full of weed.  Do they have broadleaf herbicides here and do they work?

    Thanks again.

  3. Hello,

I've just rented a house in Plai Leam and have inherited 20 medium sized pots full of weeds.  They line the entrance to the house and are in full sun.  Can you recommend some pretty flowering plants that would do well in those pots.  Some photos might help me identify them.

    Many thanks.

  4. I would like to apply for my first time driver's licence.  I have a UK car licence.  I understand that I need a medical certificate and a letter from a doctor for my first licence.  I would like to also get a motor bike licence as well. I would like to know if I have to sit the written test for both car and bike?  Or just bike?  Or neither?

But my biggest issue is that I'm colour blind .  Not so badly that I can't tell the difference in traffic lights, but I do have trouble with the tests.  I fact I only found out that I was colour blind a few years ago.  Is there any way around this?

    Thanks

Looks like one of the common Rat snakes.  Could be a Kuri also but not sure.  Harmless.  The blue eyes indicate it's either starting or finishing molting.  It's partially blind.

Thank you.  I don't mind having snakes around the house, if they are harmless   I'd rather not touch him or move him on.

    Hello Sauc

Well in addition to the Maenam and Ban Tai nurseries (Ban Tai nursery is same as the larger one in Maenam)

If you head past Nathon, towards Hau Thanon, there are several nurseries on both side of the road... You might find what you are looking for, not all stock the same plant material...  I would warn about plants that are better grown in the northern Thai climates, not all plants they sell here are good for the local climate... it's sometimes trial and error! (most are OK though)

Some of the nurseries will pot and deliver your plants, usually a small fee or tip would be asked for or expected ... Although really no tools are really needed to pot plants up! A good pair of hands really is all that is needed!

Potting soil sold in bags, generally need a bit of sharp sand added, (not beach sand) It's not that hard to find on side roads!

For dragon pots, some nurseries carry them, if I remember correctly there are a few shops that just sell the pots... (after Nathon and the larger Maenam nursery) you just need to keep an eye out for them.

Tools, as said, to do this yourself is not difficult, but perhaps a pair of pruners, watering can or hosepipe... as some will need to be watered twice a day especially during hot or windy weather...

    Don't forget to fertilize too!

    Hope that helps

Thanks, I'll have a look over there tomorrow.  I have been looking at plants and taking photos to try and help me find what I'm looking for, and guessing that if it's already growing it should be OK for me.

And speaking of fertilizers,  can you buy the slow release tablets for water plants like lilies and lotus?

Yes, I know that I can just get my hands dirty.  Can I buy clay for the lilies and lotus?

Is there an insecticide that I can add to the water that I will keep papyrus in?  I don't think there will be enough water for small fish to keep the mozzies down.

    Thanks again :wai2:

  7. Hello,

I'm new to the island and I'm looking for a good place to buy potted plants, my garden has vast spaces of tiles and bare walls.  I have been to the nurseries in Maenam (smaller and larger) and the nursery in Ban Tai.  The selection is ok, but I was hoping for more.  And I was wondering if is better to buy the pots somewhere else and ask them to pot the plants for you ( I'm without tools)?  The nurseries didn't have the right size, or type (+/- drainage holes) for the plants I wanted to buy.  If you know of a store that has a good range of the typical Thai pot with dragons and what not and all sizes, types and designs.  And one last thing, where can I buy the fancy tailed guppies for the water plants?

  8. I'm on Moo 4 Bophut, but I think it's more like Bangrak.  Big C is fairly close, about 10mins.  But I don't mind driving around.  It's a great island with so much to see, not just the beaches ;).  But it's a little hard to keep one eye out for a shop and the other on the traffic:P

Love the pic:clap2:.  Can't wait to explore some other, and perhaps less travelled, parts of Thailand.

  9. Maybe you can also help me with something else I'm looking for while setting up my new home here?  I'm looking for a good quality wok,  old fashioned steel, that develops a  wonderful patina after many years of use.  I had to leave my old one behind :(  The woks at Tesco and Macro wobble and have no weight to them.  I also can't find a bamboo steamer anywhere, or a pyrex measuring jug, or a set of measuring spoons.  Is there a kitchen store or a Thai store that would have these items?

    Thanks again for your help.

  10. Hello,

I'm sure this has been covered, but I couldn't find it.

I will be moving to Samui with my family in 2 weeks :)  But I'm not sure which mobile provider to choose.  I saw that there were lots of choices at the Central Festival.  We have 2 existing phone and I would like to buy a 3rd phone under contract.  I heard that AIS is OK the best.  Is that true?

The villa I'm moving into has fibre optic from CAT.  Are they good?  I would like to use it for IPTV.

    Thanks :)

  11. You can buy pet food in most super markets like BigC, Makro and Tesco, they have a whole rack for pets; and also many 24-hour outlets (7-elleven, Family Mart and like) have some.

There are vets with pet-accessory-shops at the Ring Road in Bo Phut/Chaweng area, one is almost opposite BigC (called "Young Num"), another about opposite to Chaweng Post Office, between the two traffic lights between Tesco and Chaweng Noi.

I passed it today, "Young Num" is closer to Samui Town Center, than BigC – Google Street View here.

Great! Thanks for the map :) It's not too far from my new house. I'll be able to arrive, liberate the cats from their travelling boxes in the house and grab supplies all very quickly.
