It's impossible to predict how Thailand will change in develop in the future, and what the impact of that will be on people who want to spend time here, retirees, digital nomads, pleasure seekers, travellers, etc.

The bureaucracy appears to be increasing and the authorities are more strict with people who move in and out of the country, even the amount of time that you need to attend the language school has increased. I agree that visas can be a hassle, perhaps less so for a retired person who does not have to undertake visa runs. It is not as cheap to live here, especially if you are a Brit hit by a post-Brexit slump in Sterling. It's tough for many Thais too.

I'm not someone who wishes to stay here long term and I plan to retire in my home country or one with a similar culture to my own. So I work around the issues above and try to get the best from this experience - using visa runs to see other countries. As a non-Thai I feel pretty welcome here and have had good experiences on the whole. My favourite place was the Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai areas, I always felt safe in these areas. A place like Pattaya or even Bangkok has all the issues that bigger cities have and a traveller has to be a great deal more guarded in these areas.

As much as I have enjoyed the experience I will be in Europe by October. I may return to Thailand in the future but I would never settle here. As a foreigner, you have less (no) rights and are more vulnerable as you get older. Good luck to anyone who retires here but it is simply not for me.

If you don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen.

    Can you speak Polish ?

  2. Almost 25 years.

Returned to the USA, with my family, on June 15 of 2016,

to the S.E of Chattanooga TN near the Georgia border.

Lovin' every moment, we don't miss Thailand at all.

    Well we do personally miss...

    - the nanny

    - the maid

    - the after school tutor

    - the guitar tutor

    - our old dog 'stich'

Almost everything here is more plentiful, higher quality, more choices, less expensive,

excepting a taxie and haircuts ($12+) and cigaretts ($5+).

    Benzine or diesel is <$2/gallon.

Far more choices in beer/wine, which is less expensive.

Schools for the 3 children are rated very high, both locally and nationally,

    and it is free.

Compared to the crap expensive bi-lingual school(s) in Thailand.

Crime is low in this area.

Lot's of clean fresh water lakes/rivers/streams for fishin' and boating.

Lot's of very good camping areas.

There are no dam barking soi dogs to keep one awake.

    My neighbors are great.

Lots of malls, cinemas, golf courses, restaurants.

Several minature golf (putt-putt) business which also have...

    - lazer-tag

    - arcades

    - go-karts

    - paint-ball

    - bowling

    Several gun ranges for shooting/training.

I now have rock solid internet, 1 GB down/up ($50/month)

and 4G+ phone service ($100/mo for 5 phones unlimited data)

It is 'clean' here. A clear lack of pollution.

One can drink water from the faucet.

    Infrastructue is excellent.

Need police/fire/EMS, here within 5 minutes.

So far, every individual i've met,

can carry on a intellectual conversation.

I go to a store looking for a specific item,

and they don't have it, they tell me who likely does.

Some have even called that business and checked for me.

    Return polices are outstanding.

There are no traffic jams. Be anywhere in <25 minutes.

Electricty/Water/Gas to the home is cheaper and reliable.

The neighbor said they can't remember the last time the power went off.

Jeez I could go on... but why bother.

I do not go to bars, nor go watch the titty shake,

so there is nothing to miss.

To be clear, I am not Thai bashing.

Every point I've made is valid for me and my family.

    Your milage may vary.

However, I do dread the coming temps of winter,

    for myself and the children.

I and the wife still have a 15+ mil baht home+land in Thailand,

    near Tallad Thai in Pathumtani.

    Plus furnishings/tools and such.

So there will likely be trips back within the year.

Why did you come here in the first place ?

If you were not a yank, I would not believe you !

    Maybe a monger ?

  3. We did mention this website several times on thaivisa.

And the huge number of foreignerS who get murdered every year here is quite depressing!

Few months ago, i found another website about murders in thailand. I would not be allowed to post the link here and i would certainly be banned.

I did have a look at this other website, and that was a huge mistake. I still have nightmare, the picture are simply gore. Its on the trashy side.

I read the case of a middle aged foreigner who was murdered by night on pattaya beach, this case was not mentionned here on TV. The picture were from thai bypasser. sick.gif

farang-deaths.com is a good way to remember you, this country is really unsafe.

if it is really unsafe (in your opinion), why do you stay here ?

I imagine people in Ansbach thought they lived in an ideal society.

you can not give an honest reply without the team apologist telling you, to go home.laugh.png

So your judgement of farangs in Thailand is judged on how many posts they have on Thai Visa !

Some 'sad sacks', include yourself in that category, have nothing better to do than sit in front of a keyboard.

Hey, if you are happy, who am I to argue ?

I feel safe as houses here, been here a long time.

If I felt intimidated, I would have no hesitation to leave.

But to come on a forum, and try to profess how dangerous it is here (in your opinion), is pathetic !

  6. It's not about giving money to the family, it's about chipping in to pay for the funeral. The amounts are recorded in a book, and when they come to your event, they are obliged to reciprocate. As well, each household will have 2 small yellow books which record what is paid out, and what is paid back.

Consequently, I generally don't give more than 500, so as not to burden the poorer people. But if they are friends, or doing it hard, I slip them a thousand bypassing the book. Sorry I don't have a pic of the book. Not house book. Smaller.

Not sure it is all recorded.

I always put it in a blank envelope as many people do, gather them all together, and pass them all over together.

It is nobody's business what I, or anyone else donates.
