  1. If you are entering on a 60 day SETV, and you know that you intend to apply for a 30 day extension to this what is the best/correct way to answer the "length of stay" question on the TM6 ?. Bearing in mind if I have to show my flight ticket to the IO they will see my return flight is already booked for 90 days time.

Get an METV at the last possible moment.

3 months in (with an extension or border run).

    Just under 3 months out.

Slip in just before the visa expires. Get an extension to make it 3 months.

That way, one METV will last you a full year. METV's get far less hassle than SETV's at the airport.

Am i missing something ?.....from what you have written here I make that 9 months. How do you make it a full year ?

Just picked up a pair of PMC DB1 Gold speakers today and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed.  Unfortunately, I won’t be nearly as impressed when I finally get my rig up and running, as this was the system that they hooked the speakers up to.

Somehow, I don’t think my ฿65,000 Hegel integrated amp will sound quite as good as ฿5,000,000 worth of Chord gear.

     I think I’m ruined.

PMC is available here.  They even have a Facebook page.

    https://www.facebook.com/PMC-Thailand-949449788520256/

Depending on the model, some are even cheaper than the US list price.  The DB1 Gold limited is on my list of speakers to check out.  The others are out of my price range.

A couple days ago, I purchased an integrated amp from a small dealer here in BKK.  He had lots of Naim Equipment (it appeared to be new but I didn’t ask) and he is also the dealer for Sugden. (Hi-Fi 99 in Fashion Island Mall). They have a Facebook page and the owner speaks NO English.

WRT how customs determines the value, I really don’t know but I’m pretty sure they will get their puns of flesh.  I decided that it’s easier and more cost effective (for myself) to sell my equipment back in the US and repurchase here.

Thanks, yes I know PMC are available here. Maybe I’ll end up doing the same, if I can find a reliable source for the Naim equipment.

I was thinking of doing the same although my electronics would have to be converted from 110v to 220v.  I decided against that and then thought about just shipping my speakers.  The shipping cost plus the customs duties IMO made it useless endeavor.  I can’t seem to dig up where I saw the duties, but from what I remember reading, Electronics are taxed at 10% and Speakers at 30%. (The tax/duty/whatever you want to call it is levied on the value+shipping fees+insurance fees.  How they come up with their valuation, I have no idea.

Thanks for the reply. The thing is the speakers (PMC) I could could buy again here, but it would be expensive to do so, and some of my system I can not. (Naim). I’m pretty sure the Naim distributor in BKK has given up the distributorship. I’d then have to deal with the sale of the duplicated components in the UK. I’m not sure either in that case then how they would arrive at a valuation based upon the shipping cost, insurance...etc when the shipment would have mixed component, ie speakers, amps etc ?...

  6. I’m looking to import my HiFi system which has been in storage in the UK. Four separate boxes, weight around 50kg. I’ll intend to use a shipping agency. What are the implications, if any ?. Looking  for some replies of those who have first hand experience please.

I take it you mean you are classed as Non resident for Tax by HMRC?

No reason you cannot be paid into your UK account if you have one unless your private pension provider has some restrictions. Unlikely if it was originally based on working and paid in the UK.

Thanks for the reply. Yes that is what I meant, Non Resident for Tax by HMRC. My private pension has been paid into my UK account for some years now. I guess the next question is will Santander be happy to keep my UK account open with a Thai address ?......only one way to find out.....

Bangkok have washed their hands of those of us who don't live in Bangkok, so doing it there would require renting a place there, then providing proof you live there.

Supposedly, they told the local-offices to do them - but some won't, or only rarely, or only if receiving special-compensation (10x+ the actual fee) to do it.

That depends a LOT on how Chiang Khan treats conversions.  But if you are out-of-country now, and can meet the criteria for London, that would seem the logical first choice.  It would give you 2 years time, plus the correct starting-entry (a Non-O entry) to apply for a retirement extension in Thailand.

There is a 3rd Choice, if the London O-A doesn't work out, and Chiang Khan is a PITA - which is to get a single-entry Non-O based on retirement at Savannakhet or Penang.  That would be easier than a conversion at a troublesome office.

Many thanks for your info. Based on your comment re renting and proof etc it looks like Chaeng Wattana is a non starter ..... I am currently living in London and would not have an issue with the police report, medical cert etc, so yes i guess its a logical first choice taking your comments into consideration. Thanks for the 3rd choice suggestion too.

For the option to convert to Non-Immigrant O visa within Thailand, a factor to consider is in which part of Thailand you will be living.  e.g.  Cholburi Immigrations (Pattaya/Jomtien) apparently makes it quite difficult to do the conversion.  I believe some other areas of Thailand still don't handle the conversion, and if so, you'd need to make two visits to Chaeng Wattana Immigrations (Bangkok) to accomplish the task.

I'd be living in Loei so my nearest immigration office would be Chiang Khan. I need to contact them to verify if they can do the conversion or not. If not then I would visit the main immigration office in Bangkok, and stay the 15 days there for the two visits to complete the process. Which leads me back to my original question...which is likely to be the easyer option. Non Imm O-A London or Non Imm O Thailand ?. Thanks for your reply BTW.

  10. Which is likely to be the easyest visa to apply for, the Non Imm O-A in London, or the Non Imm O once in Thailand (converting from a SETV). I can not apply for the Non Imm O in London as I don't yet have a state pension. The 800k in the bank for either option would not be an issue.

Looking ahead are there any advantages/disadvantages for either when it comes to applying for extensions, (based on retirement).

    Thanks in advance.
