Wonderful, thanks! Had all but given up all hope of seeing your weekly news again but just logged in for the first time since Xmas and delighted to see that you are back again.

really missing my fix of The Week That Was!

Looking like it's time for me to renew my passport and head back over after a 5 year break from the place. Things went downhill badly following the Coup and death of the old King as it became increasingly difficult to stay in the country for any longer than 60 days.
Had thought I'd never venture back again and looked at Malaysia and Indonesia as easier visa friendly options. However recent events have given me hope that perhaps not all is lost!
Thanks for writing a much better column than last episodes lackluster effort.

Best one yet, keep it coming my friends.

This is my once a week look at this website. A very pleasant Sunday morning ritual thanks Rooster. The comments section is also very interesting to read, giving lots of insights into the minds of the average punter on this site. Thanks everyone!

Ahh, I fondly remember the sleeper train journeys all around Thailand, Malaysia and VN!
Stuck here in Oz, it costs me more than a return flight from OOL to KLIA or beyond for a slow train to almost any distant destination. Crappy sleepers here with strict rules and zero privacy are all you'll get if you're lucky. Another good read, thanks R. My weekly dose of Thailand always warmly welcomed. Cheers.

Me too. Always a good read, and being stuck in Oz, I can only recall with fondness my 15 years of having made Thailand my second home B4 we got shut out of all Overseas travel.

Ditto...Stuck here in Oz, missing my Durian fix and the odd happy ending together with 3 months in a nice serviced apartment near the beach on Samui and a nice hire scooter. Just priced a holiday on the Ozy tropical coast to find that it'll cost me just as much (which would have included return airfares) for just one lousy week!!

Also make sure you find out the height above sea level of the building at ground level because the paper that cannot be named has today mentioned BKK as sinking at a rate of 2-3 cm /year and none of it is far above the current but rapidly rising sea-level.
So my best guess is around 5 to 10 years before it all goes under!!
Good luck.

Garden shed, dog house, etc.
No need to do that. Just put a layer of foam like they use in concrete edging etc and silicone it in between each panel and use bugle head screws with large washers to secure the panels to the framing and bingo, you have very resilient roofing with filtered light coming through as a bonus.
I built an awning over the sunny side of my house and replaced the rusty iron that covered my front veranda with old PVs.

My guess is... it's an approaching train! Here in Oz, they've just determined that the most likely cause of the virus spread on the 7th floor of a quarantine hotel in Brisbane came via the air venting system, indicating the airborne spread theory is strong.
The other big news that's little known is that the last 7 years have each been the hottest in recorded history and the sea-level is now rapidly increasing, with 4 mm last year being recorded by NASA.
That's before we take into account the political instability, climate change and environmental catastrophe resulting from out Global Corporate Military Industrial Consumer culture that continues unabated.
Enjoy the moment if possible but be prepared for much worse if you are able.

A nervous flyer, Rooster would admit to praying on planes. Not for another dear wife but my dear life.
I share your thoughts and feelings on this topic, and your comments about children being subjected to violence reminds me of the time when awaiting a train on Phumpin station (Surathani), witnessing a woman smashing her 10 year old +- child's head into the concrete wall whilst nobody on the crowded platform and train that was stopped at the station, said a single word. I yelled at her from the train I'd just boarded but the woman just sneered at me and carried on regardless!

I take Tramadol once in awhile. Not often as I understand it can lose its effectiveness.
I have joint and neuropathy pain that make sleep difficult.
Any more experiences?
After more than 20 years of chronic pain from osteo arthritis, the ONLY thing that works for my pain relief, is CBD oil. Tried every other thin under the sun and happy to be pain free for the first time in decades.

Only my 23 years old KIK understands what's happening and supports democracy.
Older Thai all are pure idiots.
Agreed. My 2 Thai GFs are both university educated and relatively wealthy individuals yet neither of them will say a word about the situation. Afraid to do so I strongly suspect.

I have had this for decades now and found that HIIT exercise routine 3X/week together with
a yoga, stretching routine and keeping my weight down goes a long way towards keeping it under control. However, winters are particularly painful for me and being stranded in SE Qld means my usual winter trip to Thailand for massage, swimming and warmth have ended. I was lucky enough to qualify for CBD oil script and it works where no other 'pain' killer or anti-inflammatory has been of any use.

I use a popcorn maker I got from an OP shop for $5. It works wonderfully well. I like a darker roast so I wait about 2 minutes till it starts to show a few glossy beans and I quickly cool them off in a large stainless steel bowl before grinding and putting through my espresso machine. The freshest coffee in the world. I also grow my own coffee here in Oz but the process from tree to roaster is complex, so I won't bore you with the details.
Best wishes

"... On an average week I translate about 60 stories. In recent weeks 50 plus either started with Covid-19 or contained coronavirus... But still the Covid-19 stories came, still us noble translators struggled to stay awake as yet another angle of the same narrative was explored..."
I could not agree more. I do not blame TVF or other news organizations, but the tedium and repetitiveness of the content has gotten to me. That said, today had a story of a projected NASA rocket launch! Whoo-Hoo! One of my favourite subjects; as the saying goes, thank you three times.
I don't pay as much attention to the news as I used to as I am unable to 'sink my teeth' into news stories about the virus anymore. The simple fact is that, despite all the informed/educated speculation, there is no way to know with any accuracy when countries will end the social/medical measures, or to what degree they will be eased/dropped, what the interaction(s) will look like on a global scale (this virus is NOT a local phenomenon) and how things will look if/when it finally occurs. In light of that, I am unable to speculate/project/make educated guesses/etc about what will come next, so I don't really try. I just hope that those in authority, in Thailand and beyond, make the best possible decisions and that we all get out from this sooner rather than later and in one piece.
To sum up; it blows.
In lieu of speculating about the future, I often share stories with a few old mates at the beach while swimming (on Koh Samui, the beaches are open); we all have stories which begin "One night in Bangkok...". I suspect that the entire roster of TVF members have at least several similar stories, and a few members have hundreds. Yes, "One night in Bangkok..." stories, especially from back in the day, might contain references to copious amounts of whiskey and beer, three-eyed sloths, run-in(s) with police, haggling with street vendors, tales of groping with a surprise or two, dancing bears or elephants, meetings with... er... ex-CIA/ex-Special Forces guys at the bar, nudity in all the wrong places, Connect Four, seedy hotels/apartments, further haggling with whoever, truck loads of alcohol, tales of wild taxi/tuk-tuk rides, roof top/riverside sunrises, wild and groovy sex, even more haggling about something, etc; given what we all know of Bangkok, the list of possible elements in a story is frankly endless. However, ALL the stories will, at some point, include two things; the song "One night in Bangkok..." and hot dancing girls.
So, in order to prompt the memories and allow you to share a story or two with your mates, I give you an up-dated remix version of "One night in Bangkok..." with some hot dancing girls.
It is medicine for mental health and comfort against cabin-fever.
Enjoy!
Thanks sooooo much! Reminds me why I just can't seem to get excited about Caucasian women any more!

Best is beer Lao dark 6.5%. It's good. I've seen some 7/11's selling it as well as supermarkets. Does anyone know if you can buy a case of it in BKK somewhere ?
Makro sells it in Samui.

Recently, I took my new Thai girl friend to Malaysia and Bali with me. No problems with immigration at the Malaysian end of things. However, things turned pretty ugly at the Bali airport! We'd just come through passport control and had our 30 day stamps entered and done the bag X-ray thing and were just about to exit the airport and go grab a taxi, when a Muslim black-robed female officer detained us both.
We were then subjected to dozens of probing personal questions, regarding our relationship, jobs, money, travel arrangements and hotel bookings etc.
We were both scanned for drugs with some wand device and my g/f had all of her belongings removed from her backpack and searched in detail. Her wallet was searched and her visa card and bank book were looked at.
We were also asked why we only had carry-on baggage when we intended to stay for 4 weeks. I answered that it is pointless to pay for checked baggage and have to stand around carousels for ages when everything we may need is cheap and readily available here.
Good enough to be allowed out you might think? Oh no. I was asked to provide proof of our hotel booking. When I pointed out that I had stayed in Kuta recently and had made a verbal booking with the manager, I was made to log onto the wifi and show my skype record of conversation with the hotel manager as evidence, before they went away and checked for themselves with whoever.
Enough now you may think? Oh no, my girl friend was then removed to a back room where she was stripped naked and subjected to a full cavity search.
We were finally allowed to repack her gear and exit the airport without a word of apology or explanation for this invasive and intrusive interrogation.
To add insult to injury, when we got to our hotel, it was found that a 1,000 thb note had mysteriously gone missing from her wallet. Now I wonder how that might have happened?
So, if you intend visiting Bali with your Thai girl friend, don't be surprised if something like this happens to you too.
This will be the last time I ever go to Bali.
Rooster feels like MacArthur as he returns to Koh Chang - the more things change the more they stay the same!

Maybe it's time to rebadge this page to 'The Month That Was' or should that be 'The Year That Was'.
What happened? Did you get stoned and you missed it or something? I certainly do miss the weekly rave. After a 6 year break from late 2017 till now I'm headed back in July for a couple of months to see for myself how things have changed in southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
