I doubt that the full body scanners used at airports are strong enough to harm the baby. The radiation they emit is no more than you encounter everyday. But refusing to go in it may mean you are refused boarding.

I have to agree that I have seen little evidence that the pictures work. Noone I know has stopped as a result and some people have just started carrying their cigarettes around in a cigarette case.
