Appreciate our circumstances are different but thought I would share our experience of my wife getting her dependant extension in December 2015. We are both UK residents and got married in Sydney, Australia.

Hua Hin immigration would not accept our original Australian marriage certificate even though it was in English and had an official stamp, bar code etc.

We had had to follow the process as outlined above i.e.

    1. Get our marriage certificate certified by the Australian Embassy - in and out in 20 mins.
    2. Marriage certificate and Embassy document translated to Thai.
    3. The translated documents certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

There was was a translation service just down the road from the Australian Embassy in Bangkok. They also offered to take our documents to the MFA to be certified at a very reasonable price and we had them all back within 24 hours.

My wife then sailed through the extension process at Hua Hin Immigration.

    Thank you skorts.

Appreciate your comments. Duly noted and will be implemented as and when necessary .

    Thanks with gratitude.

Tip that can help you out.

Have the proof of your income made by the Embassy of your country and sent the original to her with a copy of the ID page of your passport.

Be sure if you are using your translations that they are certified, legalized and accepted by the Thai foreign affairs. There is a good commercial service at the stairs that lead to the Department.  Recommend to use them.

To enter Thailand will not be a problem when she has the Visa for the entree. After the entree then you have to do all the homework for the Visa to stay and the Visa stamp at the local Immigration Office in Thailand you resort under. Ass well you have to sign a lot of other documents too and both have to appear in person when you do the Visa.

Also do the report of the address (TM28) of you and your wife. Save the slip of having done the report of address of stay in the passport.

Fort he Visa conversion to the Stay I am not sure if the is done with TM7

    https://view.officeapps.live.com/op/view.aspx?src=http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/download/tm7.doc

if you go the Immigration Office they will provide you the set you need.

and be prepared to provide one original set and one copy set. as well have at least 4 pictures with you size 4 by 6 cm.

You have to do some homework and get things in order. There is no easy way to do things and you have to attend in person you and your wife.

The paperwork for the extension of last year was 28 pages this year and to add more information, proof and documents and became in total 57 pages per set.

And before getting the temporary Visa Extension stamp with the appointment to return after so many days for the Visa Extension of One Year, they added 4 pages to the complete set with the newly taken the extra family picture in the Immigration office.

    So as you see

little homework and lot of patients and all is done and set before you know.

Have a great time with your wife.

    Thank you Autonuaq .

as above  no.1,2,3 not needed just english translation of marriage certificate.

Note  as Sri Lanka is  on the restricted list of Countries that need get visas in their own county

she can only obtain her Thai visa there, ( same as my Cambodian gf ) ;-(

    Thank you phuketrichard .

Your comments are appreciated. Yes, unfortunately SriLanka like Cambodia is on Thai restricted list .

    Thanks with gratitude.

The Colombo Embassy should accept the translated certificate.

Thai Immigration will usually accept foreign marriage certificates that are in English, but I doubt many, if any, offices will accept an English translation of a Sri Lankan marriage certificate, which is why I am suggesting you get it translated to Thai and certified by the Thai MFA.

As you are visiting the Colombo Embassy you should be able to get them to certify the English translation, and that certification should be accepted by Immigration.

However you decide to proceed I suggest that you visit your local Immigration Office as soon as you can after your wife enters Thailand. They decide what is and isn't accepted. If the existing English translation or Colombo Embassy certification of that translation aren't accepted you are going to have plenty of time to organize a translation and MFA certification in Thailand.

The 80,000 rupee is about 20k baht which is the standard worldwide to get a visa.

Thank you sir  , I can handle that easily . That so far is the "only" do-able and logical thing I have gotten out of my post.

Rest is confusing advice . Similar to that received (prior to this post)  from "well meaning" expat friends  and 3 Th immigration Lawyers.

I am beginning to feel like --its a "guessing" game !! ? As far what exactly are the docs the IO will ask for and accept. When we go to immigration  to get her the extension of stay as my spouse.

Oh well, on the positive side , I am at least a bit more knowledgeable with credible info , then I was before I posted. Because you all are very well known as the "learned" Gurus of this forum :)

    Thank  you again .

    Non 'O' Visa

Your wife should apply for a Single Entry Non Immigrant 'O' Visa. The requirements vary around the world, but you will need to supply at least,

    • Your marriage certificate. The English version is sufficient.
    • A copy of the extension of stay stamp in your passport.

I suggest you contact the Colombo Embassy directly. They do appear, from their website, to want to see 80,000 rupees, but my understanding is that they will accept you as a sponsor.

    Marriage Certificate

    In Thailand,

    1. You need to have your marriage certificate certified by your Embassy.
    2. The marriage certificate and Embassy document need to be translated to Thai.
    3. The translated documents then need to be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

    (1) The marriage certificate was translated/certified/notarized  by Sri Lankan Ministry + Catholic Church Dioecese of Colombo . So do not foresee trhat being a issue with Thai Embassy on Colombo.

    (2) 80,000 Sri Lankan Rupee , that is easily handled as long as they allow me to be the sponsor ( logic says they should--I am the husband).

    Marriage Certificate in Thailand >>>

Tbh , I can already see the nightmare in the making :(

    1. Ok

    2. Really ??   Where do I go to get this certification ?

    3. Another curve-ball !!   MFA  where ?   Its a huge ministry .  Smh, smh -----

***these are the conflicting info that I had alluded to in my original post .  Smh ! Smh !!

Oh well !!  Smh , smh----- How to make a simple process  absolutely a nightmare !

    Talk about frustration city !!!

Thank you sir , (not trying to shoot the messenger)  for your wisdom and kjnowledge.

I guess I just do not understand   foreign affairs  !! --haha

  9. I appreciate  your detailed workflow from your bullet points.

    * Please clarify >> marriage certificate translated and legalized in Thailand prior to applying for her extension

( We have our Marriage Certificate English translated/ stamped/notarized from the Ministry and also from the Church.

Is that enough ? Or we need to do ......?? )

**confusion and stress has come re: the bullet point (below) due to conflicting info received as stated in my original post . You kind guidance is very much appreciated.

in order to  enter Thailand  with a Non Immigrant 'O' Visa>>  What documents do we need for the Thai Embassy in Colombo?

( We have our Marriage Certificate

English translated/ stamped/notarized from the Ministry and also from the Church .  I am flying out next week to help her with the application process? [ her English is limited ]

    (i) I am being told here that she will have to show US$12K in a Sri Lanka Bank account, with aging of 6 months

(ii) She is a house wife and I am the only earner in our 2 person family , she does not have that $$$ in her account and never has had that  in her life time:(

    Feeling helpless .

    Thanks in advance.

  10. I am requesting kind help from members who has faced and resolved this issue.  Note >>  Please no  unnecessary off topic comments are needed nor wanted

    >> I am really stressed out by getting "too many conflicting"  suggestions/guidance  from friends and 3 Thai Lawyers !! :(

My Details :   (i) I am an USA Citizen  and recently received my 12 month retirement extension with multiple entries   (ii) My spouse is  a housewife,  below 50 years of age and is  from Sri Lanka .

    A.  What do we need to do so that she can come and live with me continuously as my dependent during my stay in Thailand ?  I plan to extend my retirement again on  Oct 2017 .
