I'm Pita, - Aussie living in Singapore 24 years. I've been transferred to Bangkok mid Nov. I have found this forum to be useful already. forum.singaporeexpats.com/search.php?search_id=newposts is a good forum like this one for Singapore.

Isn't it 10 years residency now before claiming the OAP as well as 35 years in country since 16? What about missionaries and charity workers who spent their working lives overseas on nothing? Man I hate the country Australia has become (and it will become a lot worse in the years ahead I fear).

For those coming after me asking the same...
OK - 328% levied on the Parkers Guide value (less 25%) ...
A 10 yo car worth GBP4,000 in the Parkers Guide would cost GBP17,000 without insurance and freight and clearance costs.... clearly not worth it. The scrap value in Singapore alone is around GBP5,000 in April next year.

If this was in any way worth it. The Govt here would make sure it wasn't.
Well what is the customs duty levied on? The value of the car... how is that ascertained?

I thought it's effectively impossible to import used cars unless you are Thai and have owned it overseas for a minimum of 2 years. Take the scrap value in Singapore and be happy.
The law appears to allow a foreigner with a 1 year B Visa to import (permanently) a used vehicle, I am curious as to the customs duties etc.

I've just posted the opposite! As a Singapore resident I do not recommend this. The importation process into Singapore is just nuts and only valid for used cars less than 3 years old. You also need to pay import duty and buy a COE (180% and USD40,000).

I am being transferred to Bkk. I have a 9.5 year old Subie Forester (Turbo - 150,000 km and in good shape) here that is due for 'scrapping' in April (Singapore COE system forces compulsory deregistration at 10 years unless you pay for a new COE - currently around USD40,000).
I will have a B visa (non immigrant) for one year.
The car is really not worth much in Singapore (roughly $5,000 for the 'body') and I note that the import duties are high in Thailand as well as the process being a bit draconian.
However I like my Subie. What is the import cost actually like to be? Has anyone an agent they can recommend who can help import the vehicle (I'll need an agent in Singapore as well but I think I can find one here).
Thanks in advance.

How does the government define or check residency? Do they check with immigration or the ATO or do they ask you to estimate? I've just tried to remember every time I've been in and out and it's not easy tracking down 40 years of travelling as a missonary kid and then an offshore oil worker.
