How to make "meeting the parents" in Isaan perfect?

I've been studying Thai culture for years and there's nothing I don't know about this subject and happy to share the knowledge as I'm not a selfish b'stard.

Once your friend has perfected the meeting plan then he's guaranteed that the parents will think the complete opposite and detest him on first sight.  He can shove the smart phone where the sun doesn't shine, though they'll accept it as a gift anyway, as they'll be certain that he's lording it but he still won't be good enough for their daughter.  They'll also be looking at him as a walking $ATM$ and look to play the long game in the hope that they can extract more money from him than in their wildest dreams.  That's just for starters.

We have just been told by another Issan native that flowers are not seen as a normal gesture of politness there and don't count as a gift because "you can't eat them".

Seriously, don't read too much in to it.  Give her some dried fruit then.

All in all, the daughter is preggers and there's no going back now.  Keep it simple, respectful and inexpensive.

p.s. just in: a mobile phone has been prepared as a gift for the Dad already

Why a mobile phone?  Sounds a bit desperate and setting the bar a little too high for my liking.  Oh well.

A few beers, a bottle of Hong Thong and you're good to go, and throw in some flowers for mum.

Not much but at least a toilet with a flush.. the place i looked at had a bucket of water.. and a little ladle inside.. repulsed me...

    That's posh for 4k a month.

Anyway fair play to the OP, he quickly cottoned on to the fact that he was going to live a miserable existence in BKK on his available budget, promptly spunked his money on a good time and legged it back to Blighty to regroup.

I'm going to assume the OP is a fairly young man but he's definitely got balls and is learning fast.

Better luck next time and I'm sure you now know that cash is king to live in a modicum of comfort.  TIT.

I'll tip my hat to you for your courage, BTW.

I make that about 25,000 Bt..  is that right.. if so.. you would have a pretty spartan life here.. .  even in Isaan... not a lot of money left for honey..

Just a tad over 31000 baht based on Bangkok Bank's rate this weekend.  If and when the exchange rate regularised to about 50 baht to the pound then you're looking at 36000 baht.

  6. When we come on holiday to LOS we always have travel insurance which also covers motorcycle accidents.  We go abroad many times throughout the year so just retain a rolling one year travel insurance policy and also have EHIC cards.

I dread to think what would happen to us if we had a serious accident in LOS, or elsewhere, without travel insurance.  Actually I know, as I see it in the news all the time with victims families trying to raise tens of thousands of £s / $s through gofundme websites to settle eye watering medical and repatriation bills.  Even then some victims do have travel insurance but without sufficient coverage for all eventualities which is completely bonkers or the policy has expired as they 'forgot' about it.  Still that's up to them and not my look out.

If my wife or I were lucky enough to survive a serious accident or medical event then I want the absolute best care afforded us.  If we die then just chuck us on the funeral pyre.

I'm just not willing to risk the uncertainty for what costs the same annual price as a meal for two at a decent restaurant.

Therefore we don't require an enforced policy as we take care of ourselves already but it's a good idea to remind the masses as many seem to leave their brains behind at departures.

  7. I'm surprised the moderators have put up with ddavidovsky for so long.  Quite a serious subject and something ddavidovsky dismisses with such ease.

These are children that we are talking about, but according to ddavidovsky the kids should just say no at such a vulnerable age and that should be enough to deter any predatory pedophile according to him.  Highly disturbing.

She has a degree in marketing and has had her own businesses in the past, but as I am an ex-accountant, perhaps the most important thing she has picked up from me is the need for careful budgeting, which seems to be something that Thais generally are not only not very good at but do not see the need for.

Sorry, but that statement is complete nonsense as a sweeping statement.  My wife is far superior to me in the budgeting department.

    Now you're being childish.

It stands to reason that there wouldn't be any point in contesting all three states if there was no chance that Clinton could gain from it. The fact that there is is something you need to accept like an adult; not like a spoilt little child who has just had his favorite teddy-bear taken away from him.

If you say so.  Not a word from HRC either way.

Come back when the recounts complete then we can compare notes.  Next.

To me it sounds like you have potential for making more from this property than what you are asking, but I don't know if your market to rent to foreigners would be your best choice for renters. At least longer term anyway.

Being so close to the hospital and walking distance I think I would target single nurses as my prime renters. If you can add a bed or two you may be able to find 3 of them that will move into together and ask something 2,500 Baht each. Get someone to write and advertisement in Thai and find a place in the Hospital Bulletin Board to advertise.  Just a thought.

Rent to Thais at your peril.  Just too problematic and getting them out would be a nightmare if it came to it.

The OP isn't looking to become a millionaire on the back of a 5k a month rental.  Bear that in mind.
