  1. During the last two days I have been to both the WW and N Joy for food, company and a cold beer.

Whilst I didn't not like N joy I doubt I will be going back.

The WW is in a much better location, has western food and colder beer! It has more customers, the pool table is free (20 baht a game at n joy), there is a plethora of accommodation close by. Ting is very good with the customers and the place is quite large if a little sterile.

The accommodation out he back is 350 baht a night. Sorry for the poor quality of the pic but I only had my phone with me.

    Image058.jpg

If you want some cheaper try this:

Aree mansion. Walk out of the wrong, cross the road and walk to your left for 50 metres.

    Ph 045 265518-21

    250 baht for a fan

    300 for air con

    2500 per month for fan

3500 per month for air con.

Small, hard beds (double), hot water, small TV with sat tv (so they say) and a small bar fridge.

If you want something nicer book into the:

    Phadaeng mansion.

    www.phadaengmansion.com (dosn't seem to work)

    phadaengmansion[at]hotmail.com

    Ph: 045254600

Brand new, around 500 baht a night, comfy beds, good size tv with sat, fride, balcony. Walk out of the wrong way, ross the street and turn right walk for about 75 m.

I am currently at the Montana paying 400 baht which is better value then the Tokyo.

    Hello MeMock,

Not a big issue, but pool is not free at Wrong Way Cafe. Well, unless you win, which despite your back problems, you probably did. Loser pays 20 baht. Apparently, there was a gentleman (?) in last night who thought that we pay him 20 baht when he wins, which is ludicrous no matter how much one drinks. He accused Ting of "cheating" over and over again, and was banned. On an earlier day, he actually paid his bill once, then tried to pay it again, just to see if we would charge him again. He thanked us for our honesty and admitted that he knew he'd paid already. Ting is cracking down on silly people, so, silly people beware the wrath of Ting. Doesn't anybody out there want to mention that we are having a Christmas Eve. . . oops!

  2. Hello all,

According to correspondence that I’ve received, in the good old 60’s/70’s there may have been (probably were) Hashes going on here in Ubon, but we’re going to call this one “Run no. 1,” anyway. So, for those drinkers out there with a running problem, or if you are the non-drinking variety who just like running/walking/socializing with a fun group of people, you are cordially invited to the Ubon Hash on Saturday, August 2nd. I’ve actually participated in only one Hash before, a Bangkok excursion Hash of sorts, held at the Pha Taem National Park a few months ago. That inspired me and some others to consider reviving the Hash here in Ubon. Luckily, the others are far less lazy than I am and are handling the organizing of the affair, whereas I’ve just been asked to let the members of Thai Visa know about it. Further information will gradually be posted on the following website: http://www.ubonhash.com. For those of you who don’t have a clue what I’m talking about, do a google search for “Hash House Harriers,” or PM me for more information. Believe it or not, people will be coming from all over SE Asia.

    Cheers!

What is more misleading that comment that your place is only one in town????

no one has said that your place is where the most of farang goes but for sure not the only one..big difference.

Your place, i don’t dislike,,, i don't go out in town to any where, i listen and make notes, also some how you forgetting that i have been your place 1's or twice for coffee,, but of course, it wont make too much profit for you and you ploce is closed when im in town and when your place is close for morning coffee, one goes somewhere else.

And im sure you about your comments about me to be lament comes deep from your heart as you might remember that I and Good Gary(who past away) organized the BIGGERST Ubon farang gathering 24th Feb. 2006 where you and your family also participated.

After that thing's start to roll in good way towards to you and many other's who open they restaurant\cafe\bar after that.

Also i have tried to get people up and doing something ELSE than Drinking, as drinking is not a HOBBY in my dictionary and i have working life as well.

Ubon is full of life and activities but not so many pleases still farang friendly (for night life).

Jealousy seem s to be key factor here as well,, guys who are having they bar's very rarely talking to each other,,,but of course every one need's to make living.

    Hello Marco,

Do you play golf? A group of us have been playing most weekdays from about 8:45 a.m. in Warin, or 9:45 at Surinthorn Dam. Once a month I'd like to organize a sort of golf competition where we could all meet at Surinthorn Dam on a Sunday, play golf, have a BBQ or something, and stay the night at the nice bungalows they have there. Of course, those who just want to play golf could choose to do so. This has nothing to do with Wrongway, just an opportunity (excuse) for some of the guys from further out, perhaps even from Sisaket, Mukdahan, etc., to bring their families out with them for a bit of a change. Anyway, you mentioned OTHER activities.

Drinking is not obligatory. A number of guys don't. Some like to play pool, some like to meet new people or people passing through, some just like to chat. And sorry for not being open in the mornings. Our girls have shifts that are slightly staggered in order to facilitate our 2:00 p.m. to midnight opening hours, but Ting really needs to be there and a 14 or 16 hour day would be too much of a strain. Unfortunately, we don't live at Wrongway. As for jealousy, at least from our perspective, you are wrong. N-Joy has morphed into a complementary kind of place (meaning a pleasant alternative quite unlike us), although when she opened it it was as close to a copy of our place as possible, it seemed. Could it be that the gentleman who originated this post asked me, or my wife, the question before N-Joy opened? Anyway, Loui and I have no problems with each other, he is just trying to avoid disturbing his wife, which always makes good sense. It's all quite silly, really. And we do all appreciate your organizing the farang get-together. If anything, it proved that people would appreciate the existence of farang-oriented pubs to get together in. No hard feelings, OK?

  4. i am aware of a bar called 'the wrong way cafe'

but are there any others in this town, that would be suitable for the likes of farang,

food not important, just cold beer and other company that speaks english !!!

Try N-Joy, that is nice and more home deco than WW, it's bit off from the town but close by ver reasonable rated accomodation cross the street (Ubon Jail) :o

N-Joy Bar & Restaurant in 300/1 Phalochai rd., run By EEt & Loui (Aussie) Phalochai rd. is west of Chayangkun rd., pass Tohsang hotel, Ubon prison, its 200 meters after the big rooster on the opposit side

and close by Nevada hotel there is lot of joints where you can speak Eng, but not so much farangs there.

Also Swing party house in Chayakoon road opposite of Kasikorn Bank.

    thanks marco h,

was beginning to worry there'd be nowhere else to go,the owner of the ww said there was no-where else !!!am moving to warin next month to be nearer my son, just need the odd evening out now and then, but didn't want karaoke being the only other option.i know about the ones near the nevada, the one nearest the grand i watch the footie in when i'm up that way.

thanks for the directions as well !!

Many other places to go, not to worry on that.

That comment is one way to get customers, but one's in the town you will find even some thai plases very suitable and fun, i know that the guys going to Swing party house time to time.

    Hello Jasthease and Marco,

No, it is not a good way to get customers, as is obvious from this thread. It is very rare that I would make such a comment. In fact, it could be said that I provide too much information most of the time. When asked for alternatives to us I’ve always recommended the Cozy, especially to Scandinavians, but now closed, Tony’s Bakery, and of course I always mention the great guy, Loui, at N-Joy, even if our wives have their irreconcilable differences. Now, if by “owner” you mean my wife, then she might very well have said we are the only Farang bar, but that’s a matter of definition. N-Joy has a “home décor” because it is basically at a home, serving what I hear is very good Thai food, and playing Karaoke. It caters mostly to Thais, but there are a number of Farang who frequent it to enjoy Loui’s company, or who simply prefer it, and some go to both our places. While I understand that our style (or lack of) is not everyone’s cup of tea – we play Western music, serve Western food, have a proper pool table, and sort of cute staff – we are really the only place at the moment like it in Ubon. On a good night like Friday or Saturday we’ll have 30 to 50 people in, mostly Farang, so I suggest coming and asking one of them about other places to go because you will get a less biased answer, but it is unlikely that we would withhold information on purpose. But hey, anyone can just be in a rotten mood some days. And Marco, for someone who continues to lament the so-called fact that Farang in Ubon don’t get together, should be striking up spontaneous conversations at Lotus Tesco, I don’t recall you ever mingling with the great group of people who frequent our pub. I don’t mind if you dislike us, for whatever reason, but please don’t suggest that we go out of our way to “misinform” our customers.

By the way, Jasthease, a lot of us go to Zodiac at the Nevada Hotel later in the evening, around 11 p.m. or so, but the music starts at about 9 p.m. The band is great (they were at Swing before) and if you sit at the counter you can actually have a conversation as the music isn’t atrociously loud. On a Friday or Saturday night there may be as many as 15 or more Farang there. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your time here.

  5. Be grateful if someone could give advice. In Ubon, is there a gym or sports centre - ideally with running machines?

    Cheers.

    Hello Jesse,

The best place is the Ubon Ratchathani Fitness Center across the river in Warin. It's got all the machines you can imagine, a small pool, a sauna, and a rock climbing wall. They do seem to have a problem with their water supply (trickling showers), and I think I've lost a few friends because of that. If you only need machines, there is a small place right next to us (Wrong Way Cafe) if you don't mind exercising amongst a large group of severely sexy women. There is also the sports college across from Lotus Tesco, but I've never checked it out. Drop in sometime and we'll point you in the right direction (www.wrongwayhome.com).

  6. I will be bouncing back and forth between Ubon and Pakse over the next few months. I read like a crazy man. Anyone know of a used book shop in Ubon or Pakse or better still a cafe, bar, club...which offers up an one for one book trade shelf. Thanks.

    Hello,

As Bergen was kind enough to mention, my pub/restaurant in Ubon has a selection of books, most contributed by our friendly customers. There are no rules about borrowing them, but please try to return them. If you've got some books you've read and are tired of lugging around with you, feel free to leave them with us so that others may enjoy them. My website needs a lot of work, but you will probably be able to find a map, address, etc., at www.wrongwayhome.com. If you are here on New Year's Eve we are having a party with a free buffet so you can stuff yourself before borrowing some books.

  7. Unless he has more than 21 day remaining on his visa exempt entry he will have to depart Thailand first. Have him take his marriage certificate/copy, copy of wife ID card/signed/dated and apply for a non immigrant O visa in Vientiane, KL or Singapore and two months after his return apply for extension of stay from Immigration. He can use 40k per month family income for family extension or 65k per month pension/income for retirement (use Embassy letter). He also has the option to use 800k that has been in a Thai bank account for 3 months period to application.

In general retirement is less paperwork but no work permit is available on that type of extensions of stay.

Thanks for the information. He doesn't have 21 days left, so I guess he faces a trip out as you say. Does he need to register his marriage in Thailand or is his US certificate good enough? Also, how long will his extension allow him to stay?

    Thanks

  8. Hello,

A friend of mine, a retired US citizen with a Thai wife (marriage not registered in Thailand), was here on a retirement visa but suddenly had to return to the US for medical reasons. While he was in the US his retirement visa expired so he came back on the standard 30-day visa waiver. He's wondering whether he should go for another retirement visa or a marriage-related visa. Which do you suggest and what does he need to do? He'd like to avoid leaving the country, but I don't see how he can do that. Any information/suggestions would be much appreciated (I'm neither legally married nor old enough to retire, so I don't know much about this).

    Thanks

  9. There is an English speaking lawyer in Supphasit Road just around the corner from

Wrong Way.He did translation work for me years ago for childrens birth certificates etc.

Also last year translating stuff for my wife's Aussie tourist visa and British tourist visa.

Will go around there later and get his address, phone number and maybe e-mail address and send them to you.

    Hello Sezzo,

This is the guy I mentioned in my reply to your email. I didn't hire him to do anything, just had a consultation with him about a couple of subjects. He talked me out of one subject, and admitted that another was over his head. That's a sign of honesty. And he didn't charge me for the consultation. Maybe he's a rare one who knows that word of mouth pays off, as it perhaps might be doing right now.

I'll be glad to be getting back to Thailand on Friday. It's 6-degrees C and raining here in Japan, with little snowmen showing for tomorrows forecast.

    Cheers!

  10. Is there such a thing? :o Expat hangout?

    Thanks

    Hello rumrunner,

Lampard10 is correct. I forget the name of his place (something "cafe") but it's run by a very friendly and helpful fellow named Ralph. He doesn't prepare food himself, but the restaurant next door provides menus and will bring the food to your table. Decent enough Western food. For being a pub owner, it is interesting that Ralph runs the Mukdhahan chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous. But that might just be a rumor. Other than that, the Lotus Tesco there's got the typical fast food chains. . . When are you going? I'm going up (from Ubon) with my wife and daughter on Monday for one or two nights. She wants to "see a bridge." If you would like Ralph's mobile number let me know and I'll PM you.

    Enjoy!

    Richard

  11. Richard,

Good luck for the anniversay party at Wrongway. I was there on the opening day of your fine establishment and have visited there many times and enjoyed the food, drink and company. If this party can be anywhere as good as the Aussie Rules grand final party it should be a great day and night. And I read before that you ahve the Heinekan/Tiger girls there again. Bummer that I am back in dreary Oz at the moment freezing my arse off.

Good luck mate and see you towards the end of the year

    Sezzo

    Thanks jay-uk, sezzo,

Just recovered from the get-together and found myself suddenly faced with translation work. It was a great group of people in. Many insist I mixed up the labels "mild," "hot," and "very hot" on the curries. Oh well, I didn't notice any spontaneous combustions and as far as I know nobody got sick. Some more professional guys took a lot of photos so when I track them down and steal their cameras I'll post some pics.

    Cheers!

  12. Do you think maybe it is a case that standards start to slip when the level of foreigners occupying the hotels drops? I have noticed this before at a few places in Ubon including pizzahut to name one other place to eat. Eating at places in Ubon can be a bit hit and miss. Sometimes you go and have a good meal and other times not. Could be thru' change of chef or other management staff that leads to the food not being so good. The Thais can't tell the difference so the restaurants keep churning the food out to the same low standard because it rarely gets noticed and they can charge same high price.
We started to notice a change of service in Ubon in the early 90,s and it has been on a downward spiral ever since, it seems as the number of tourists grows, so the standard of service and attitude towards them drops, now for us its just a town to pass through on our way to the village :o Nignoy

We were in Ubon last week after a short ( but a bit to long ) stay in a place called Warin, south of Ubon proper.

The TAT people were so helpful and gave us maps and info on everything. It has to be the best TAT office in Thailand and all for free!

I had quite a lot of trouble finding farang food. I was desperate for something that even looked like real food or even Thai food for that matter,

Big C had only KFC and The Wrong Way Cafe behind which we stayed, didnt open until 2pm.

Ubon is quite beatifull and the Mun river is a nice place to hang out.

Could have spent more time there for sure but we were running out of time.

    Vegemite

TAT Service is always free or should be free, I have to say never use them but as per ppl who has they say the same it's nice office and gals there are friendly.

Regarding the farang food, there is not so much to offer specially during morning's,, excpt Laithong(limited now days) and Nevada hotel might have some, i know that both of them offering buffee style BFast's.

KFC opens at 10am as you mentioned, Lotus, Big-C & Robinsson has KFC, NO McDonnalds in Ubon or any other fast food chain,, nicely blocked by KFC guy here....

You stayed in Warin? But Wrong way is not in waring,, it's just off from "So called" Ubon center, that TAT office i think what you mentioned was by the fire department and if so that is so called"China town", but still in Ubon side,, ones you cross the bridge you enter to Warin side.

    Hello Marco,

we stayed at Warin for several days at a brand new block of serviced apartments called something like Orathai Mansion. It was half way between Warin and the next place to the south. The apartments were great with air con, shower, TV, security and everything that you could ask for. Except; food ( only Issan )- tuk tuks or taxis there were non, we were a full kilometer from the nearest main road selling " Issan food " and the walk was long in 40deg.

I found the Wrong Way Cafe had very good food when we moved from Warin to Ubon and met some nice people there. The rooms behind were O.K. but the cockroaches in the bathroom were quite breathtaking. No smoking but the cockroaches are free to come and go.

I liked Ubon and my visit was far to short this time.

Will try to put pic of Orathai Mansion, Warin.

Hello Vegemite, Marco, and Bergen if you made it home okay after all that beer and pool playing last night. Vegemite, thanks for the complement, and sorry about the cockroaches in the rooms. We don't manage the place, but we give them enough business that they should listen to our complaints, and complain I will. I can understand the comments about some places going downhill with food and service. Staff leave, get sick, suppliers go downhill too. It's when they stop caring that there's a real problem. We've just managed to find a really good supplier so from April 8, which will be the first day of our second year, we'll be able to offer a wider variety of food (got tex-mex and pies coming) and better steaks. The quality of the once very good Thai supplier of steaks has gone down considerably and I've heard that a lot of their customers are feeling the same way. We can't really be blamed but we have to do something about it in a timely manner. Places with management changes suffer worse than smaller places like us, I think. A once famous place nearby us has supposedly really gone down hill. My wife goes to a beauty salon across the road from them and the ladies working there say they can hear the new management screaming and shouting at the staff, as if that will make a steak any better. They probably go through more staff in a week than they have customers in a day. They will probably redecorate the place, which doesn't improve the food or service either. This new supplier of ours is run by a very good-natured Aussie in Isaan and they sell retail, too, so anyone who wants more information about them can PM me.

By the way, this Saturday, April 7, is our first anniversary. Free food from 6pm. Tiger beer on tap with a few pretty Tiger girls serving. Oh, and KARAOKE! Not my idea but it's only for one night. Spread the word. . . And moderators, I hope you will accept this as an announcement, not an advertisement.

    Hello Richard?

The food at Wrong Way was the best I had had since White Elephant in Roi Et.

Really good steak and veg and a friendly place.

Why do you open so late in the day?

I dont mean that I want a beer in the morning but what about some kind of late breakfast or something. I was seeing double with hunger by the time you opened.

Is there an opening for a falang breakfast/lunch joint in Ubon or what?

P.S. do you have trouble getting under those short Thai toilet doorways?

    All the best.

    Hello Vegemite,

For the entire year we've been playing with different opening and closing times. For quite a while we were doing 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., but we were just sending our customers (and ourselves) up to Swing Party House, often 10 or 15 of us at a time, around 11:00 p.m. (they've got nice live music, not too loud, and close at 1:00 a.m.). Then one night my wife knocked over her cocktail glass, breaking it. Unfortunately for their management and owners, one of their staff told my wife they would have to put the glass on her bill. The management realized too late, so that glass has cost them dearly. We still go there sometimes and our customers of course are free to do as they please, but we've found we do pretty good business during those last couple of hours. Now, if we could get more competent girls, I would love to sort them out into two shifts so we could open by at least 10:00 a.m. As for bumping my head, I'm 191cm and lived in Japan for 14 years, where doorways are about 180cm high, so I'm used to it. I've got to get up to the White Elephant sometime. I've heard a lot of good things about it. Got to get to the pizza place there too as I still owe him 1000 baht from 14 months ago! Well, got to get back to making my curries for tomorrow's party. This time it's an "Indian Theme." Might even try naan in my woodburning oven.

    Cheers!

  14. The game was great to watch in Perth. How was it in Ubon?

    The right team won. :D

    Edit

    Melborne to win tomorrow. :D

A good day was had by all. The place was fairly packed with all sorts of nationalities. About 5 ozzies glued to the TV and with one very happy Lou at the end of the afternoon. Richard (the owner) made some very nice chili con carne and garlic bread for all to enjoy. Beers were served by a very scantily dressed Tiger girl who then changed into a Heineken girl. Too bad they hadnt worked out how to use the webcam.

Things are getting civilised out here in the sticks when you can start to watch the footy from your home country.

    :o

Thanks to Sezzo and all for coming. It was a great day. Sorry I couldn't get the webcam up even though I had the software installed while I was on a visa run. NRL Grand Final today, for anyone interested, but all the chili and bread is gone, and it's the cook's holiday. Beer's cold, though. . .

Bergen, could you ask Jerry about his room key? I don't have his contact info.

  15. "The game begins at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, the 30th. I've been assured that by others that the game is really being shown. If not, it's not my fault. . ."

    wrongway,

If this game is via cable tv (Australian Network) the actual coverage starts at 10.30 am.

Die hard Aussie Rules fans wouldn't miss one minute of the coverage of this, the FINAL game of the year. You may want to open a little bit earlier, to cater to those who enjoy a wee sup before the BIG one. And be prepared to stay open a little bit later, to listen to the sob stories of those who back / backed the losing team :o

On Sunday, at 3.30 pm (same channel) the real men line up for the grand final of the NRL (National Rugby Leauge) :D

    C'mon Sunday :D

Thanks for the tip, Thai Chi. We'll open by 10:00 a.m. We've got cable and I hope they show all the coverage. I'll also practice being sympathetic. . . I guess if there's the NRL final on Sunday we'll be open. Typically closed Sundays, but what the heck.

Bergen! You usually don't let us know in advance that you need a room, so you're usually put up in one of the bigger rooms because the single-bed rooms are sold out, but we only charge you 350 because, theoretically, you don't mess up the second bed. Turn the place into a harem and see what happens!

The piss up is not about watching Aussie Rules for many of us, it's about watching Aussies watch Aussie Rules. I wonder if Aussie Bob will be bringing his Australian flag, the same one that fell over during the world cup.

As for the webcam, it's a bit short notice, but a brilliant idea. I'll see if I can get it worked out in time. Got ADSL but might want to go up from the 512 that I've got.

  16. Hello all,

I thought this deserved a separate thread as it sounds like people from neighboring provinces might be coming around. I asked Sezzo to post something on Thai Visa about this get-together, but from the sound of him, he's begun drinking heavilly already for the big event on Saturday. . . I hope he makes it. We're having it at Wrong Way Cafe simply because the original idea of having it in Khemmarat at Sezzo's didn't work out. I think it's a great reason to get together and enjoy a Saturday, Australian or not.

Marco has put a post up titled Ubon Happenings, or something like that, and that's a good place to begin if anyone has information on what's happening around here. But to keep things from getting messy, here are the details:

The game begins at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, the 30th. I've been assured that by others that the game is really being shown. If not, it's not my fault. . .

Because we close late, we usally don't open so early, but we'll try to be open from 10:30 a.m. or so for those who like to pull the first beers out of the ice.

Complimentary Chili Con Carne and garlic bread will be provided from 11:00 a.m. until it's gone. If it's any good, it might make it to the menu. If it sucks. . . well, it won't.

From Marco's thread there seems to be some confusion about our rooms. I say "our rooms" because we are "loosely associated" with the owner, our own landlord. A room with one big bed is 350 a night. One with a big bed and a smaller bed (good for families) is 450 a night. Bergen never looks at his bill, so nothing is available for 400. Cable, hot water, aircon, all available; but being stumbling distance from us is the real attraction. The rooms are going quick, though, so give me a PM or call (06-8686661). Lots of other accommodation nearby, too.

For those of you who don't know where we are, here's a map.

By the way, political discussions are, for the time being, not permitted :-)

  17. Stopped in on Saturday afternoon with the wife.

I had a nice T-Bone and a slice of the sourdough. The wife had pad thai. Must say, it was a very good steak. Pad thai was good too.

Your wife was kind enough to go and buy some som tam pupala for my wife. I understand they can't live without it.

Could not ask for better service in all of Thailand.

Met an Aussie expat and an Englishman. We both enjoyed the visit.

One note, Ice that beer down, I understand you had a busy Friday night and the boys drank all the cold ones.

Sorry, to have missed you. We had to get back to the moo baan.

    Ron

    Hello SawWow, Falang74, and others,

Thank you all for your support and kind words. I truly appreciate it. If you'd like any other information (website, when the guys here play golf, whatever) feel free to PM me. Ubon is truly becoming a great city.

    Cheers!

  18. Called the number in the April advertisement.

No one knows how to cook pizza today.

    The chef is out.

They have fried rice and french fries.

    I tried...........

    Closing this subject.

    Hello ChiefBEM and others,

I'm not permitted to advertise, but I should be allowed a brief comment. The pizza oven is up and running very well. Fired every day except Sunday. We bake sourdough bread daily. We can't do pizza, though, until we get one more cook. It is simply impossible for the one, quite brilliant cook that we have (he worked many years in Paris) to do pizza as well as the other Thai and Western food that we have. We hired a second cook a few weeks ago after getting rid of the useless guy before him, and as soon as he's brought up to speed and if he's willing to stay with us I'll teach him how to toss a pizza. I've done a number of pizzas and Sezzo and others have tried them, and I'm confident eventually we'll have great pizza, but I'm not the type to rush things. I want to make sure everything's as close to perfect as possible. A comment was made about why my wife, Ting, can't do it. She's actually the busiest person here because she's the cashier and she speaks English fairly well, so she's got to stay out with the customers. Anyway, the beer's cold, the other food is good, and there's a nice expat community here. If this new guy stays we'll have pizza from September. My menu will soon be on my website, a work in progress, at www.wrongwayhome.com. Mr. Moderator, this is the last post I'll make about this. Any other inquiries, feel free to PM me.

    Cheers!

  19. really? ok thats good news.

the bangkok lao embassy website makes it seem that "visa on arrival" is not possible at chongmek

and that i have to go to BKK or Khon Khaen lao consulate in advance to get the lao visa....

    thanks

They convinced me of that, too, the first time, so I made the trip up to Khon Khaen. When I got to Chong Mek, though, they made it clear that I could do it there. Three Australians did it the day before yesterday, so you can't get much more current information.

  20. hi everyone,

i am in ubon for two weeks or so.

and i would like to to go laos next crossing at chong mek.

from what i have read, i can NOT get lao visa "on arrival" at this border.

so does anyone know a service or travel agency or something in Ubon that will handle getting the lao visa for me?

    thanks

    Foolforlove,

It's very easy to get one at Chong Mek. I do it every month. Just go to Chong Mek, stamp out of Thailand, and walk about 200 meters to the Lao immigration building which is on the right. The windows on the front of the building are for leaving Laos, the ones on the back are for entering Laos, and the ones on the side facing Thailand are for your Laos visa. Go to it first, fill out the forms (remember to take one passport size photograph) and pay either USD 30 or 1500 baht. You will get your Laos visa. Then go to the back of the the building and "enter" Laos. Don't be surprised if they ask you for a small fee when entering.

    Good luck!

  21. The Magazine is out - a couple of interviews with the Farangs (I ALWAYS have to delete the 'L' I put in there instead of the 'R'!) and a picture to boot!

I have a few copies and will drop a few of at 'Wrong Way' if your open now! Tried the other day but you must have been visiting the family. The pic in the magazine is of course the most beautifull attendee (and it appears 'the boss at 'Wrong Way') with a profile of Marco just visible - these are the main people in the shot!

    Thaibites0,

Didn't expect to see that! My boss seems to be everywhere these days. You can see me in the photo offering money to anyone who would take my place for the interview. I hate interviews. . . You probably came around when our road lost power and we decided to go home and dry off. Hope you all had a good Songkran. Still shaking the water out of my ears.

  22. Howdy,

My wife and I don't drink but we want to throw a party for my bro-in-law when he next visits from England. I would like to know where in Thailand to get Beer Lao, his favorite. If it isn't available "under the counter" or whatever within Thailand, is it legal to bring back a case or so from Laos. I'd be willing to go from Chiayaphum to Vientaine and buy it if legal to bring accross the border.

    Ken Bower

    Chiayaphum Thailand

    Ken,

I've never brought it back, but I've had a couple at the Ubon Ratchathani border crossing with Laos at Chong Mek. Pretty sure a case or two per person is allowed. This would be true, I think, for other Thailand/Laos border crossings. It's an okay beer. Let me (or the forum) know if you are hassled. I read something recently about some problems with the tax people at Chong Mek.

  23. You can see by the other photo that I'm busy overseeing construction.

    Cheers!

    Richard

You can not fool us !

By the picture on the right, it is obvious who is the real person in charge of this project!

She has a pretty (pink?) dress on and is watching every move you make.

Even when you are playing with your camera.

    Regards,

    ChiefBEM

    ChiefBEM,

You are right! She's in charge of the project. I must have been the one who just pissed on the floor. . .

    Cheers!

  24. Wrong Way,

I have been following a few of your posts over the past few weeks, in particular about the wood fired pizza oven. I have a friend who wants to build one in his back yard near where I live and would be interested in finding out where you got your materials.

If you are going to Bergens place for the next farang pissup I would be interested in picking your brain about the project.

    Carl

    Sezzo,

Posted a rather long reply this morning but it seems to be lost in cyberspace. Here's a short reply. Yes, I'm looking forward to seeing you at Bergen's. Happy to share oven info. Very hard work, so I suggest your friend let me make all the mistakes first. I'm taking a break from oven building to get the place up and running for at least drinks and snacks by this Friday, the 7th. Here's where I left off, though I may cut a few bricks later today just for a mild sense of accomplishment. On top of what you see in the photo will be another 13cm of concrete cladding, making the beast a full 25cm thick. That will take a lot of wood to get up to temperature, but after that it will retain heat well. If your friend is building a weekend-use backyard one, it doesn't need to be, actually shouldn't be, so thick. Mine will be doing pizzas and roast chicken, etc., from noon to closing (maybe 10p.m.) and hopefully still be hot enough to bake breads in the morning. You can see by the other photo that I'm busy overseeing construction.

    Cheers!

    Richard
