Im curious have any of you had a situation similar to this?

I met her online, and now she wants to come to BKK and stay with me for a week. I have work so there would be days where I wouldnt be home ( im not okay with that). Im also curious in why just meeting me online she feels ready to just come live with me for a week.

    MONEY ??????

No. Almost certainly it's because you have impressed her with tales of your hi-so lifestyle, your witty repartee, your savoir faire worldliness and general je ne sais quoi; money is almost always of secondary concern where Thai women are concerned, you can rest assured.

keep a few thousand baht in your bank account an keep it open .

The mere fact of a little money in the account may not be enough to stop it being closed over time; I have had two accounts closed for being inactive (and the balance of a few hundred Baht disappeared) over the years. You may need to make a small transaction every once in a while too.

  3. It purports to be a request from Thai Customs for payment of 200B for 'formal procedure' of goods you have received, presumably from abroad. It appears to say that you have already made one payment of 200B and now another payment for April is due by tomorrow, 30th April. Payment should be made through Krung Thai bank as stated.

If none of this means anything to you, best ignore the letter, it could well be a scam.

Never fails to make me smile when I see "any legal basis for refusing entry" or what regs etc.

The guy in the uniform is the authority and regs, and if he decides for whatever reason you are not entering, then you wont be entering, period.

This is absolutely the case, and such regulations can be and sometimes are liberally interpreted by the IO or his/her superior at the PoE.

Most here will be too young to remember the hippy era of the late sixties/early seventies, when Thailand was ruled by a military government far more authoritarian than the present incumbents. Young Westerners deemed to be dressed inappropriately or have hair that was too long were regularly denied entry at the Southern borders in that era.

The golden rule in Thailand, as with other Asian countries, is be patient and be unfailingly polite, and never get up the noses of officialdom.

  5. Ignoring Golden Pants above for a minute, there are several ways to get to and from CW Immigration cheaply, particularly if you have time to spare. BTS to MoChit, a Pak Kred van from there to the entrance of CW Soi 7 for 25B, then the free shuttle bus to Building B of the Government complex is among the cheapest ways.

Going back into the centre, there is a BMTA A/C bus that goes from the side entrance of Building B to Victory Monument, via a circuitous freeway route. The schedule is infrequent, so a better choice might be a 20B motorcycle back to the main road, cross over the footbridge, walk to the small sala and wait for a Jatujak van - but note, signs on the van are in Thai only so you will either have to be able to read Thai or able to flag a van down and ask.

2 Weeks ago at Savanakhet -a  ticket out within 85 Days was OK (that was how far out my ticket was).

    Similar six weeks ago:

Ticket out 89 days from date of application.

Bank statement showing at least 20k Baht or equivalent. Thai or home country bank acceptable, but NOTE: cash will be rejected, no matter how much; there was a man with 50k Baht in line before me who was rejected.

Copy of paid-up rental or a hotel reservation for at least a day or two after planned arrival.

Possibly (if you look marginal in the eyes of consular official) itinerary for duration of stay. This can of course be entirely fictitious.

At one time, any foreigner who spent more than (if I remember correctly) 90 days in Thailand during the year was obliged to get a tax clearance on every occasion before leaving the country. It was a nightmare. The best Prime Minister Thailand ever had (Anand) earned my eternal gratitude for abolishing this. If it ever came back, I would probably never spend significant time in Thailand again.

That's correct, but I think it was 180 days, not 90. I remember the shlap down to the tax office in Banglampoo once a year in the late '80s/early '90s.

I echo your sentiments about Khun Anand Banyarachun, best Thai PM since I became resident.

The "remittance" rule in Thailand is that offshore income is not taxable here unless it is remitted into Thailand in the same calendar year as it is earned. Since money is fungible there is no effective way to determine what the source of cash remitted into Thailand is. Thus, effectively no one pays tax on offshore income. This rule also applies to Thai citizens and not just foreigners residing here.

    Best answer.

regarding the ticket out of thailand requirement at hcmc and savanakhet, can it be 6 month later or does it have to be within a certain time?

There's no hard and fast rule, but since so many requirements seem to be discretionary, personally at the moment I wouldn't push it beyond 90 days from the date you plan to enter Thailand.

  10. The stringent requirements at Savannakhet now being enforced clearly come from on high. How long that will be the case, or whether they will extend to other regional embassies and consulates remains to be seen.

As it stands, the requirements, in addition to the usual: filled-in application form, passport with photocopy of personal detail page and 1 x photo (no fee charged for SETV until end-Feb - possibly to be extended?) are:

    • photocopy of ticket out of Thailand (date is best to be within 3 months of date of visa issue, though this may not be rigidly enforced). Personally I wouldn't rely on a bus ticket - for example Hat Yai to Penang - being accepted. Others may have better info on this.
    • photocopy of bank statement showing 20k Baht or equivalent as recent balance in account (I'd say within a few days of date of visa application). Note - last week, show-cash, even in one case 50k Baht - was not accepted. Note too that your name must be clearly visible.
    • If you are young and have many previous visas, an itinerary for the duration of your stay may be requested. This is easily constructed and printed.
