Visa exemption while i am deciding on if its right for me

first advice : forget what you have been heard and those "folks who have been doing this for years..."

2 entries a year would be the norm with a visa exemption

as us citizen  wanting to stay long time in thailand , i would choose the single entry tourist visa (setv)

if you want to leave after 28/29 days , you could come with visa exemption , then leave , then visa exemption again....

  2. for closing this thread  :

for the marriage certificate/affidavit : i must come with the requiered documents , after being approved , the appointment (with thai gf) will be decided. must wait min between 3 days and 3 MONTHS for receiving it (or pick it up at the embassy... :shock1: (price : 80 euros)

for the income affidavit : must wait 24 hours for receiving it or pick it up at the embassy  (price 780 thb)

or it must be  :partytime2: in bangkok by belgian ambassador and staff,

or i must rect. my previous post as follow :

"...i suppose  it should NOT be  approximately the same with the belgian embassy...)

    What could I have done?

    -Fight back?

    -Complain to immigration straight away?

-Complain to his company when I get home?

-TRY to file a police report when I get back?

Each choice is more absurd than the last.

    1) you don't react , don't do nothing and don't complain at all nowhere , certainly not here on tv

    OR

    2) if you feel strong enough , YES , you punch one time and let him sleep as a baby for half hour...

  5. hello, as i come from belgium to thailand 4 october with visa exempt (1 month) , and as i don't want to stay long in bangkok , i would like the same day going to the belgian embassy for asking :

    1) the cerficate necessary to marry my thai gf 1 week later

    2) the income affidavit  because i will apply for 1 year extention based on marriage during my month stay

i know how to proceed and i have all the documents from belgium .

i already asked on fb belgian community  but still waiting an answer.

my question is : ( specially in the case of belgian embassy if possible ) , how long shall i have to wait for receiving the 2 docs from them ?

if not from belgium , i will be please  to hear / read how long it need from the others embassies  , so i can have an idea...

thanks you by advance for the replies

You mentioned Pattaya, which is covered by the Jomtien immigration office - one of the worst possible places to try to get a conversion to Non-O from a Tourist or Exempt entry, which you would need to do before applying for the 1-year extension.

Much better to show up with a Non-O from London, simply due to the "Jomtien Immigration Desk #7" factor.  Since you cannot use another office, you could end up having to go to Laos or somewhere else in the region to get your initial Non-O - as I did, because I also live in the Jomtien/Pattaya area.

According to other reports, annual extensions in Jomtien are no problem, because they are handled by different IOs who are not averse to doing their job (Desk #6 for Marriage-based).

understood you and ubonJoe wrote , but i 'll come to thailand (4 october) with visa exemption then immediatly marry my gf (in kapchoeng).. As the IO told me befor , (based on his promises last year) i hope to get this 1year extention of stay based on marriage : if not accepted , iknow what i have to do (plan B) : going to savanakhet and get the marriage visa.... i will let you know  what will happen... Must say that every year i stay in kapchoeng (3/6 month a year) and meet the IO quasi every day... maybe this fact can infuences the decision (unexpected positive AND without any bribe).....

You can get a 30 day visa exempt entry when you enter the country and extend it for 60 days to visit your wife for a fee of 1900 baht. You may be asked by the airline for a ticket out of the country within 30 days to board your flight to here.

You don't have to get a visa before you arrive. There is no 30 day visa you can get.

A single entry non-o visa that would give a 90 day entry is only 50 pounds. From London embassy website.

Fifty pounds is about 2200 baht at todays exchange rate.

oka , Joe . now my question :  entering the country on visa exempt entry , can i apply and get extention permit of stay for one year (based on marriage) ?

You have time to get a Tourist Visa before coming - and I would do this.  Not only will this eliminate the need for a return air-ticket (which Immigration may ask for), but will also give you more time to get your marriage-documents prepared.  Getting married may take more time/effort than you anticipate, and it cannot hurt to have the extra time to deal with any issues.  One of those issues is getting documents certified by the MFA - given they will refuse to do any certifications if you are in the last 10 or 15 days of your permission-of-stay.

My advice - go to the amphur immediately on arrival and find out what they need to allow you to marry.  Don't believe any of the stories online about "how easy" it is, because stories as recent as 2016 are out-of-date, as (some) amphurs make the rules increasingly more onerous.  Each amphur makes up its own rules, so be prepared to "amphur shop," if necessary, to find an amphur-director who is not opposed to "mixed-marriages."

thank you for your reply. i plan to buy a flight out of thailand with air asia to rangoon (25 euros) and not use it (for the airways staff on onboard in koln) who can make me problems... for the imm officer (getting the 1 year permit of stay based on marriage , it would not have any problem as i meet him everyday in kapchoeng....  i stay 1 km far his office.. )

Spot the difference.  I have not re-arranged or re-formatted either block of text copied from:

    First, the link you gave:

    2. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

      - Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months
      - Visa application form completely filled out
      - Recent( 4 x 6 cm.) photograph of the applicant
      - Evidence of travel from Thailand (air ticket paid in full)
      - Evidence of adequate finance (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family)
      - Consular officers reserve the rights to request additional documents as deemed necessary

    Second, Royal Thai Embassy(London) website:

               For Single Entry

    •  A current passport with validity of over 6 months beyond the date of application
    •  Visa application form completely filled out
    • Two (2) recent (2 x 2 inches) photos of the applicant
    • Consular officers reserve the rights to request additional documents as deemed necessary.

How welcoming to be set up thus by ones "hosts".

excuse me Enoon , but are you sure  that the embassy in london haven't updated this ??? in belgium (and many others) anyway they ask 1) proof of income , 2) hotel booking (or invitation from people  who must prove their address in thailand), 3) bank statement (in belgium) at least 600 euros permanently on an account the last 6 months for the Setv , 6.000 for the Met
