  1. A couple of years ago I purchased a cheap “frog” zapper. Didn’t get any mosquitoes. I gave it to the building employees. I saw a neighbor buy screen doors but did not help much as the mosquitoes here are smaller than the screen pattern.

The fogger hits this place every month or so. I found the best idea was to move to the top floor (8), keep the balcony doors closed, and use “Off” repellent.

i think the cost of the annual insurance would depend on the age/value of the car the op intends to use, if as posted it will be less than a year old when he takes the reigns it will be covered by class 1 insurance, if the car is older then a class 2+ could be obtained, at a cheaper rate than class 1,

Grumpy Duck, where did you find this motrbike insurance and is it for a proper bike or a twist and go

It is for a rental Yamaho Mio. I wanted extra insurance to cover me as I wasn’t confident with the insurance I purchased through the rental agency.  I am not sure where I found the agency. I think it may have been a reply to a TV post or I googled it. Cannot remember.

Interested to see how you get on. I looked into it and had to buy one years worth of class 1 insurance they do not do 1 month.... or at least I could not find it. I needlessly pay premiums for 2 vehicle when we are only there for 1 to 2 months in the year.

After checking around I found full coverage zero deductible MC insurance for ฿2000 a year. I don’t know what auto rates are, but I doubt they are terribly much more expensive even if ฿10,000 wouldn’t it be better than worrying?  Buy a years coverage then cancel could be an option also.

  4. One suggestion I didn’t notice was get a plastic package for electronic components like cell phone or air card.

During my first songkran here I went walking on Ladphrao 101 to photograph the festivities. I wrapped my camera in plastic even then most revelers seemed to show respect and avoided splashing it. I took over 250 photos and gave copies to many people which seemed appreciated.

I am not a party animal. In fact I am not comfortable in big crowds but I won’t be critical of people that are out having fun. I dress appropriately and stay safe.

If it were COSTCO I would gladly pay a membership fee. Amway, not so prepared to buy in.

No comparison at all. COSTCO is an ethical company that believes in taking care of its employees. Scamway just a get rich quick scheme, many so called "distributors" need welfare to survive in the USA.

  6. Two years ago I had an overstay here in BKk. I booked a flight to HCMC anb put a deposit on a hotel. When I went to check in at Air Asia Don Muang I was denied, they said Americans must apply for Vietnam visa 4 days before departure. I lost my money on the ticket (non transferable) as well as the hotel. I ended up buying a ticket for Siam Reap. I have been told thats not the case now, but suggest you check with consulate first.

  7. I regret wasting time listening to this one sided hogwash. Are the only expats here limeys? Or are those the only ones that matter to this clown trying to play journalist? Where I am staying we have a couple Brits, French, German, Russian, Australians, New Zelanders, Canadians, Americans and even a Pakistani family.

That's strange. Officially you are allowed to apply for an extension on the first working day after your visa (or permission to stay for the pedants) expires (in the event it happens to occur on a weekend or holiday), without any overstay penalty. I've done it myself on a couple of occasions.

I believe she was put off as I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

When I re-entered Thailand from Cambodia the lady at immigration looked at my passport and after I explained the overstay remarked  that she was not a nice person or something of the sort

  9. When I first got here I researched tap water potability. I read that tap water was clean from the original location but some older areas water mains were in bad shape. Many steel pipes were sealed with lead at joints. Many pipes were deteriorating.

The place I live does not provide direct access to city water instead water is stored under ground in a big concrete cistern and pumped into the building. This stored water is not treated at all. Once I was out of bottled water and used the tap water for a cup of noodles. I was sick for 4 days. I only drink bottled water since (except Nestles')

  10. I recall using a visa run company several years ago taking vans from BKK to Laos. Total was about ฿6500 included transportation from Tesco Lotus parking lot on Sukhumvit at On Nut to the border, visa fees, hotel accommodations for one night, meals at hotel, and the return trip after receiving visa. I also flew from BKK to Udon Thani with bus connection to Vientien via Nok Air. Found a very nice hotel down the street from the consulate (forget the name Don something). Airfare about ฿3000 hotel less than $50.  Since then I got a retirement visa so no more visa runs.

  11. Poor choice of available replies. Some say I am slightly superstitious in gambling, but I seldom gamble. To me it is logical, example; I never let anyone else borrow chips, reasoning is chips go up and down, if there are no chips left when they go down I lose. (riding a motorbike in Bangkok traffic is a big gamble 555)

    discusting

PJ's topics are 'interesting', in case you hadn't noticed ... still it's holiday so many are bored ..

And .. when they cleaned out our road drains one guy had to submerge for about 20M to get the rope from one drain manhole to another ... that wasn't exactly a pleasant job either ...

I was also curious what discusting meant.

If you enjoy eating meat products you should see the environment of a slaughterhouse

I recall when I was stationed in a small country town in Korea seeing a stray dog lift its leg to urinate on noodles left to dry in the sun. I would not eat noodles at such places since.

When I first got out of the army I got a job working clean up crew at Star Kist foods. I still refuse to eat fish after cleaning up at the cleanest of canneries (formerly) in California.

Most any food production factory has its disgusting parts.

As far as needles are concerned, in most places it is illegal to discard sharps or other biohazards in trash. I always saved my sharps and discarded them at my doctors office or a hospital.

I have wondered why trash collectors will sort recyclables on the street taking more time to disrupt traffic instead of having sorters do this at a dump site.
