  1. Despite being assured that they were going to clean up after themselves, I am left with a giant pile of garbage right outside my house...someone has gone through and taken out everything that can be salvaged such as cans and bottles and left me with the rest.....a home for rats.....today is Monday and the smell is already over-powering.....does anyone know who I should sue for this mess?

  2. I have stayed here longer than anticipated this time and am running out of books to read, does anyone know where I can buy English books in or near Sakorn Nakorn? A long shot I know but just thought I would ask......

    You can order online at:

    www.megabooksthailand.com

delivery is usually within 24 hours to anywhere in Thailand and is free of charge on orders over $60.

  3. Hua Hin finally has a used bookstore! Megabooks have converted the second floor of their Khao Takiab store (next to 7-11) to used books. The store is open seven days a week and shoppers wishing to sell or exchange books can do so from 2-5 pm, Monday-Friday.

On the main floor Megabooks still offers the latest best-selling paperbacks at the lowest prices in Hua Hin (B295) and now offers a wide range of used books, all at prices under B200. Free internet cafe and a comfortable coffee and gelato bar makes Megabooks Khao Takiab THE place to hang out!

  4. Megabooks have now opened a kiosk in Market Village strategically located in front of the ATM machines, next to the entrance to Tesco. They are offering the lowest prices in Hua Hin on paperback novels as well as a full range of magazines and low-priced children's books.

  5. I ran some threads of a similar ilk a few years ago for the benefit of newbies, expats, and those living in denial, but they were not well received either by their target audience or by those who no longer needed such advice. As a general rule of thumb, if you meet someone within 1km of Silom, it's probably more trouble than it's worth- that's all I'll say.

Alas, I must hasten to add the exception to the rule stated above. Not a bad rule actually, and I can't totally disagree with it; however I met my partner on the BTS Saladaeng station and we have been very happily married for 5 and half years.

  6. I will be visiting Huo Hin this month. I would like to correspond with someone who lives in Huo Hin or who knows about it. I hope it will be a place where I will feel confortable to spend my summers. I am a 73 year old gay single man who enjoys a place where I can rest, read, and exercise on a cool beach. Money boys turn me off, but I enjoy an atmosphere where I can feel comfortable being a descret Old gay man. Sex is not a priority for me. I want to learn more about the culture, history, geography, attractions of the area. The gay life is an interest by not a priority. I would also like to find a travel companion who would like to explore the mountains, parks and scenic wonders west of Huo HIn.

I have lived in the same house in Hua Hin for 16 years so perhaps that qualifies me as one of the old-timers. In 20 years in Thailand I have visited most provinces, many of them repeatedly. I have not found anywhere that has the quality of life offered in Hua Hin. IMHO Hua Hin has the best air quality in Thailand and also the best seafood.

I don't know how important sex is to someone at your age, but it is available in Hua Hin, and much more prevalent than would appear at first glance. With the arrival of Villa Supermarket, your food desires are only limited by your budget.

As for the disparaging comments about heathcare, the new private hospital will indeed open in two years time and it will be staffed full time by highly-qualified doctors. This is one of the best hospital groups in Thailand, a public company, and it will be the finishing touch in terms of making retirement in Hua Hin perfect in all respects.

  7. Its aptly named as its not easy to find but Hidden has joined Take Five (Indian cuisine) and Papa John's (European/Thai) to open Khao Takiab's first fusion restaurant. Chef/owner Khun Roy is back in Thailand after running award-winning restaurants in Miami, San Franciso and Dallas and his expertise in the kitchen is on full display with a superbly delicious offering of fantastic western food. Check it out....go past the police box, over the bridge and straight on to Lunar Resort. The restaurant is in a converted house directly opposite Lunar Resort.

  8. Power cuts were very infrequent when I lived there two-three years ago, less frequent than where I live now in Chiang Mai.

I am one of countless farang here who will never learn 48 words of Thai. My friend who just spent his final years in Hua Hin could not speak it, either.

If you are getting on in years, you need to worry about the availability of adequate health care, which is still nonexistent in Hua Hin. They always say that a big new hospital with qualified staff will come next year.

Actually Bangkok Hospital Group (think Bangkok Nursing Home) have already announced on their website they will open a private 50 bed hospital in Hua Hin in 2010

In 2009 Hewlett-Packard will open a service centre in Hua Hin so no more trekking your computer to Bangkok for repairs. With the arrival of Villa, I can't think of much else required for a happy retirement. I also love Chiang Mai and maintain a condo there but the air quality in Hua Hin can't be beat anywhere.

  9. This is not something I want to discuss with friends over a beer, so hopefully a TV member can help me out.

My mate and I both have our own homes and do not have a live in lady. We are both pensioners (him quite a few years older than me) and look out for each other and see each other every day. I am scared that one morning I will call on him and he might be deceased. God forbid this should happen for a long time, but I really don't know what procedure I should take. Do I call the police or an ambulance first? What happens then to the body? How is a cremation arranged?

Sorry if this is a depressing topic but I really need to know. Can anybody help?

From my own experience (twice so far) the following steps need to be taken:

    1) Call Police who will call a doctor to pronouce death and provide a certificate

    2) Call embassy with name and passport number of deceased.

    3) Contrary to another poster, an autopsy can be avoided but it requires excellent Thai language skills and is rare.

    4) No temple in Thailand will accept a farang for cremation without three documents, one from the embassy, one from the police and one from the Tesabaan.

Both of you should be mutually aware of these requirements and be in a position to assist whomever goes first.

  10. So, which are your favorites.

Nusasiri is OK, but the surroundings are very ugly/depressing.

noble remix at thong lo looks very nice but still not close to being finished.

what do you recommend around the promphong/asoke/chitlom/lang suan area? i depend on the bts at the moment but plan to be driving soon.

i cant go over 10m if that matters at all.

Have you looked at Paholyothin? I have a two bedroom, two bathroom condo, fully furnished, within walking distance of BTS Aree for sale at 6.9 mil.

  11. Where can you pruchase any of these titles in Thailand ?

I've seen the Guns, Ganja one in Asia books, not sure about the one Boo mentions tho... You might try checking their website, might also try checking megabooks.com and see what they have as well.

Actually, it's megabooksthailand.com and yes, they do have it.

  12. Update: Villa Market Hua Hin does not stock Grape Nuts. I will never go there again!

If they did, I'm sure the Grape Nuts would be safer to eat than the meat....at least according to this post I found elsewhere on TV.......

Some relevant information for Villa Market users. I do not know if the following information relates to all the Villa stores, but I can assure you that it relates to Phaholyothin Soi 8.

In this store they sell bacon made by Yorkies of Pattaya(an excellent bacon)

Whilst doing my usual purchase I noticed that most of the packs had had their Yorkies sell by date stickers covered by Villa market stickers. Having a crafty peel back I noticed that the Yorkies sell by dates were several weeks out of date, and yet the Villa stickers showing were current!!!!. In the UK totally illegal, I would imagine the same here?

I complained to the store boss who immediately withdrew the whole consignment from the shelves.

I went in today 3 days after my previous visit and guess what? Yep every pack had now had each of its out of date stickers removed and just had a current Villa sticker.

Complaining again just got a smile and a shrug of the shoulders saying that the big boss told her to put them out on display!!!!!!!

Just letting you people know out there!!

  13. I will be opening a bookshop in Nakhonsawan with a modest selection of english books to begin with but will be expanding all the time so stop by for a coffee and a chat, the coffee will be free and dont feel obliged to buy anything. Its in Daowadung rd next to the new ECC building, across the rd and down from

    Tsutaya video shop.

It should be open in 3 weeks hopefully so come in and say hello

    Cheers

    Dave :o

Is your shop open? If so, congratulations! If you ever need any books or magazines at great prices we would love to help you. Check out our inventory at: www.megabooksthailand.com

  14. Villa Market is opening on Phetkasem Rd and Soi 84 tomorrow, July 7th. This will bring a lot of convenience to farang shoppers. Along with the new branch of Bangkok Hospital to open in 2010, this is a very welcome addition!

As I was carrying my wee basket down the aisle (trolleys are out of the question due to narrow aisles) I overheard a lady gasp: "This must be the most expensive supermarket in Hua Hin!" She's right of course but its the only place to get those items that simply aren't available anywhere else in town. As for staples, expect to pay 15% + more than Tesco, Makro, etc.

Most staples are cheaper elsewhere. Magazines and books are cheaper at Megabooks. That said, we still need Villa for those specialty items. I just hope they can survive on specialty sales.
