1. I think you mean hair removal by tread, there are many beauty shops in Bangkok do that, they call Mung-Ming (hair plucking by tread) , it is Chinese language.

In Chiang Mai, you can ask any beauty shop at the market opposit of front gate of Chiang Mai university (info. not update), or on Nimmanhemin road (soi 9 etc), Central airport plaza or Central Kad Suan Kaew, there are many beauty shops there but mostly they do it with some product called wax.

All the places I say I am not sure they do also treading or just only wax.

No CMBE, it's not called Tread... The OP had it right. It's super popular in the U.S. right now for thinning and shaping eyebrows and called Threading because they actually use a cotton THREAD to remove the hair.

2. I live in a serviced apartment building and they have True as their TV provider. To watch the games, I simply went to Tesco/Lotus and bought the cheapest antenna/rabbit ears for about 107 baht (about the cost of one drink) pulled the cable, plugged the antenna in, and I get a very solid picture on Channel 3 and will get to watch all the Euro Games from the comforts of my apartment. So even apartments/condos that have True, you still have a very cheap option to watch the matches.

3. I was going to post a picture of the scene myself, but Dave2, always on the ball beat me to it. I took a photo because I was extremely perplexed on how this could have happened. The car is a very low profile car and the curb is extremely high which would make it very difficult to jump the curb. Plus the car appeared to go in backwards. Only thing I could figure, maybe the guy was backing out of a driveway and hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

4. The right move is to fire your maid, cleaning lady and gardener every year or so and then hire a new one.

I have a friend, his live in maid has been with them for 20+ years. She raised his 5 children.

He cant fire her now or he would be a real dick. So now he has two maids on the payroll and one doesnt work.

Maybe it's just me, but the real "dick" thing to do is to fire a cleaning lady or gardener every year regardless of whether they are doing a good job or not. Also, IMHO, only a real "dick" would hire a maid (probably pretty cheap) to raise 5 children instead of him and his wife doing it themselves, and then bitching about paying an extra maid when the lady who ACTUALLY is stated as raising his children falls ill.

5. Gone during Songkran? Just a thought, if your house was knowingly empty during songkran festivities, your house may have had the hose on by the locals from sun-up to sun-down;-) Or it could be a leak somewhere underground, as I would think your caretaker who checks in on the place would have noticed a running faucet or a major leak within the house. My advise, don't pay anything until you can get to the bottom of it and check for yourself.

6. Good thing in Thailand in order to scam for cash all you have to do is put on some dark glasses and sing incoherently from a portable Karaoke and you make more than any factory worker.

How did you do your research?

I can't speak for Nikster, but I've seen this quite a bit with my own eyes. Just a few weeks ago I was eating with my wife and son at a very popular Kao Ka Moo place near Chan Puek Gate (the lady cook wears a white cowboy hat) and I witnessed the above mentioned post. The man was being lead around by an elderly Thai lady, and he was wearing dark sunglasses pretending he was blind while singing into a microphone plugged into a small amplifier. As the guy begins to walk by, my 3 year old son unaware of him pushes out his chair towards the man, and he flinches reaching out his arm and looks down at my son. I don't know, either this guy was like the that Blind Shaolin Monk on Kung <deleted>, or the guy could flat out see. Anyway, I was flabbergasted when my wife gave the guy money. I said: "The guy isn't blind, he's just trying to make believe he is so he gets more money. Why did you give him money?" Her answer: "I know, I just wanted him to go away."

7. I've been coming to Chiang Mai since 2004 and this is the first trip I've eaten at any of the Food Courts in Tesco Lotus, as my 3 year old son absolutely loves the indoor playground there. While I can't be the judge of the quality of yesteryear, I can say this: I was pretty shocked at the cleanliness and quality of the food I've been eating there the past 2-1/2 months. One of the vendors cooked one of the best Kapraw Moo Kai Dow I've ever eaten in Chiang Mai. It cost 40 baht so hardly way overpriced and the furthest from bland as you could get. I guess to each their own.

EDIT: I go to the Tesco Lotus on SuperHighway (near Kamthieng Market) and not the Hang Dong one.

8. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a bar or place where I can watch the NBA playoffs? In the past, (3+ years ago), ESPN/STAR Sports used to show a lot of NBA games. Anyway, we have ESPN at our apartment, but no luck with the Playoffs this year.

Tomorrow is a big game 7 between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics, which I would love to catch. And of course I would love to follow the conference finals, which begin Monday, all the way through the finals.

Hopefully someone knows of a Bar or someplace I can catch some NBA action (maybe a bar owned by an American with some great satellite dish). FYI the games do start quite early varying from 7:00-8:00am Thai Time, so unless the owner has a interest in B-Ball, it may be too early.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

9. I was outside Computer Plaza (on the main road) today waiting for a friend to show up so we could go to Fitness Thailand. Anyway, a guy rides up to me on his motorbike asking if I'm from England (has a thick British accent). I say "No, I'm from America so I speak English". He then asked if I was a tourist, which I thought was odd. I told him I was here for a few months, but didn't elaborate. Anyway, he went on a big spiel about how he was at a Disco last night and lost his wallet with all his money and credit cards. He told me he needed to urgently call England and cancel the credit cards and get some money sent here. I stopped him and said: "What do you want?" He said 500 baht so he could make an overseas call. He tried to say I could hold his mobile phone (showed it to me and it was one that was like 10 years old and hardly worth anything). I said, "Sorry" and turned to see if my friend was coming. Just then he said: "____ OFF!" I immediately turned around and said, "What?" I was pissed and started to walk towards him to confront him, and he took off scared on his motorbike.

I know this goes on everywhere, but I'm sure it's a total scam. I mean, if I were to lose my wallet with money and credit card, would a reasonable person go off on a motorbike and ask complete strangers for money? No way.

Seriously, if it really was the case the guy could have: Turned in his motorbike and got his deposit back. Go back to his hotel and make a call from there. I mean he "supposedly" had credit cards (therefore attainable money). Plus, it's a free call on places through services like Skype to make a toll free call to a banking center customer service line.

Anyway, I'm sure there are suckers out there who would give the guy a 100 baht or so, and I'm sure if he did it enough, he'd probably make out quite well if he focused on some naive tourists.

10. I'm not into Yoga, but Fitness Thailand does offer Daily Morning and Evening Yoga classes. For the prices some of you are mentioning, in no time at all a full membership could be had there and you would have access to a full gym, steam rooms, and other fitness classes.

Like I said, I'm not sure if the classes are good or crap, but may be worth a one day membership to see if they are decent.

11. Tops by the Mercure Hotel had lots of 6-Packs of Coke Lite and Coke Zero yesterday when I went to stock up on my 1.25 Liter bottles of Pepsi Max. They must have restocked the whole section, because there must have been about 50 or so bottles of Pepsi Max. Usually they only have about 10 or so, which I usually buy the lot.

12. The shop on Huai Kaeo Road near Phoucome Hotel intersection always has Lao beer in stock (light and dark). It's on opposite side from "71 Export," closer to intersection.

Thanks Mekong Bob (and the rest)!!! Just picked up a case of the regular Beer Lao Lager (950 Baht for 24 bottles). For what it's worth, this was October 20, 2011 batch.

13. When I got back I bought some at Rimping Supermarket near the Airport, but they are out (don't know when they are getting it back in stock). So is the Rimping by the Iron Bridge. I did a topic search and a very old one said they sell cases of Beer Lao at Makro, so I took a drive to the one on the Super Highway, and they didn't carry Beer Lao.

I know of a few bars that sell it, like MadDog's who have it on their menue for 75 baht (small bottle), but I'm wondering if there are any stores anymore that stock it (Regular or Dark, it doesn't matter).

Any help would be appreciated (even if it's a just a suggestion for a reasonable priced, good tasting and satisfying non-Thai beer).

14. 3+ years ago when my son was born, we used:

Asia Translation Service

4 Inthawarorot Road

Sriphum Sub-district

Muang Chiang Mai District

I gave them the Thai Birth Certificate and had the translated copy the next day, which I in turn submitted it to the U.S. Consulate for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad with no problems.

15. WinnieTheKhwai is spot on in recommending Tiffy. Whenever I get a cold in Chiang Mai, I take a couple of Tiffy tablets and drink lots and lots of water and it's usually better in no time.

I've been flying from California (SFO) the last 8+ years and have never had more than 3 planes (SFO-TPE, TPE-BKK, BKK-CMX). Where were you coming from... Hope you got a great deal for the airline ticket because 5 planes sounds like 2 too many.

Anyway, Welcome to Chiang Mai and get better soon:-)

16. Depends on your size. I'm 6 feet and 185 pounds and find it hard to find T-Shirts that fit me (arms, chest and shoulders are usually too small). Shorts are no problem and in fact picked up a few pairs of shorts at Tesco Lotus. For T-Shirts, the Night Bazaar usually carries larger sizes as it's more geared for tourist rather than smaller Thais, but don't get suckered into paying too much.

17. As I mentioned earlier we are seeing a difference in CM already with helmet compliance.

Helmet compliance is the easy option and just requires the BIB to station themselves without moving a muscle (not during the hottest hours though) at the junction of a road and milk poor kids out of what money they have. These kids are usually only a danger to themselves. When I see traffic cops at traffic lights, crossings, running red lights, looking for mobile phone users and giving chase, then progress will have been made. This will not happen....can you just see a cop on a beaten up old Honda Click chasing and flagging down a red plated Merc.......in your dreams!

Wow theBlether, we see things very different. I've been coming to Thailand since '94 and I have seen very little change in Helmet usage. While I admittedly do seem to see more people wearing of the half-dome helmet varieties, but I'd say the majority of them either have the chin strapped un buckled, or so loose (not strapped tight to the chin), that it makes the helmet useless in the event of a high speed collision.

Anyway, I was at a Cafe near where a police helmet check-point was and I just observed. It was sad to see the large number of people who took off their helmets immediately after passing through the check-point. Also, noticed a lot of motorbikes stop and turn around proceeding to drive in the wrong direction to avoid the tickets.

18. I've been gone for over 2-1/2 years, and the other day I got on the superhighway my old way, but when i turn into the parking lot, I notice it's a Big C and not Carrefour. Am I going Crazy? (That's a rhetorical question, as I already know I am:-)). Did Carrefour go out of business in Chiang Mai, or has it just moved somewhere else in the city?

I kind of preferred Carrefour over the likes of Tesco/Lotus and Big C, in my years of coming hear.

I appolgize if this has been coverred (probably has), just didn't see a particular thread on Carrefour in my search (just a random threads of people wanting to purchase particular items).

19. Let's face it, there are tons of idiots not just Farangs. Far too often, days and days before Songkran is even supposed to start, I see loads of "Thai" teenagers throwing buckets of ice water in the faces of unsuspected motorcycle drivers going 60-80 k/p/h. To me this is much worse than a guy bringing an expensive camera into an area full of drunks and not expecting his camera to get wet. I mean we are talking about possibly taking a life, versus maybe damaging property.

Anyway, I actually walked down to Loi Kroh before heading to Mad Dog for lunch, and sure there was a few idiots, but for the most part I thought it was mostly good clean fun. All it takes is one idiot (to shoot a little girl, camera, etc.) for some to quickly label ALL as idiots.

20. 2: This is what the area right in front of Kad Suan Kaew looks like come April 13, 14 and 15:

wow <deleted>? ksk always been the quiet place for what i been, that pic is really crazy

Note that those people aren't going to KSK, they're specifically going for the party in front of it. It's one of the main party centers during the festival.

This is the place where they have Big Named Thai Bands play on Songkran. Posters of this years acts are up everywhere around the city. In the past I caught a concert by BodySlam and Da Endorphine here during Songkran. Definitely not the place to be if you don't enjoy LARGE crowds (or anywhere near the moat for that matter) and want to avoid the water. Anyway, it's hardly ever been a quiet area for the at least the last 7 years, since I've been coming to Thailand.
21. I went to Aeon Bank on 3/31/12 and withdrew 25,000 baht with my Citibank Gold card (US). I followed up today to confirm I didn't get charged a fee. Happily I was not charged a fee and calculated my exchange rate of 30.5975 per US Dollar. Looks like I found my new Bank. Since I've been gone for awhile, thanks for those who let it be known about Aeon Bank not charging a fee:-) The only downside I see, Aeon Bank doesn't show the exchange rate or the balance left in your account on the receipt, so you do have to follow up with your bank.
