To all the <deleted> complaining about how "the Thais aren't friendly like they used to be," tell me this: have you lived in Thailand more than five years? Are you highly conversant in Thai language? If your answer to the first question is "yes," and your answer to the second is "no," then shut the <deleted> up.

When i was at Tesco the lady informed me it was also Big C and 7. I have not tried them yet, but my wife was with me so she used her id. I have not tried my passport yet but maybe next time i will try. I did ask about the passport but no reply or maybe she does not know how to input the numbers. I will ask for a manager next week and hear what they have to say. It is not just the foreigners that have to produce ID it is also Thais. I cant understand why this has to be done. Next month my wife is going away maybe i will get her to leave her id ha ha

I can't believe most the posters on this topic are lay down roll over complacent of the <deleted> this government is doing about stuff that is against basic freedoms and has zero to do about corruption as in money laundering. It is a means of full control I am not going to set up auto pay or do anything else of the same. This is just strangulation except for the ones running the show who I would think are all unusually wealthy and untouchable. Totally out of line and drives my spike and I would gather even the Thai people's spike deeper into the ground of dissent. Let's see what happens with FFP., What I can say is my son in Uni sees hatred building more and more each day towards the you know who. It is their future not these archaic saluting dinosaurs.
you are amusing to me

When I'm in Thailand (about 2 months a year) usually about 5-8,000 in 1,000 bills, with about 1,500 in 100s and 20s. However, 60-70% of my spending in Thailand is done with credit cards. Cash only when absolutely necessary. In my home country, I never carry cash--use credit cards for everything.

I'm planning to retire in Thailand in 2026, and I just turned 60 this year. Since most (all?) Thai insurance providers will kick you out in x years if you didn't open your policy before turning 60, I opened a Thai Aetna health insurance policy last December, when i was still 59. Not crazy about paying for health insurance I'm not present to use (though I do visit for about 6 weeks every other year leading up to retirement, and my current policy is only about 22k baht per year), but at least I won't get booted at 70 or whatever.

Several respondents have already given you the advice you need, even if it's not the advice you want: assuming you have your passport, just consider it a loss and chalk it up to experience...move on. It's not your country...you can't win. And I would add to this a second piece of advice: stop trying to get into romantic relationships with sex workers. You're welcome.

There is actually a sign (if it is still there) here in Bangkok on Sukhumvit giving a brief explanation of the history of Sukhumvit road. I think it is near Asok.
Yes, it's just past Asoke (as you're heading east toward soi 18) on the southeast corner, near the Skytrain stairs, if memory serves.

For the racists in the room (and yeah....I know we got a lot; this is ThaiVisa, after all!): we're ALL related to Africans if you go back far enough.

Because THEY (the Central Thais) are one of the major colonizers of Southeast Asia themselves. They stole the land of Lanna, they stole the *people* of Laos (forcibly resettled them on some of the worst rice farming land imaginable (present-day Isan), to keep better control over them), they stole the land of the Khmer, they stole the land of the Malay (that last one has particularly come back to bite them in the ass, hasn't it?).

Its a way force people into 800k in the bank. That is what they are working towards.
I believe that by the time I retire to Thailand (7 years from now), the requirement will be 1 million baht in a Thai bank account, non-negotiable. So that's what I'm preparing for.

Any very likely 99% of Imm. officers wouldn't understand local government etc., documents, in English, from other countries. Why would /should they understand?
Immigration officers in ALL countries tend to be culled from the dumbest of the dumb...people likely to have never traveled outside the country of their birth (I know, the irony, right?), probably monolingual, religious, a supporter of "team sports," likely right wing politically, religious...you get the picture. Stupid and crude.

I think people have lost sight of etiquette. Dressing respectfully in an airport will not be equated to you working illegally. The etiquette code is being rewritten it seems though.
Saggy bottom pants and singlets will be the normal airport attire soon. But if you do fear that argument of overdressed at least a collared shirt with decent pants.
I would be keen to hear if anybody is harassed because of wearing a tie.
It's true. At the very least, one should not wear shorts, as this piece of clothing is not something adult males with an ounce of self-respect would not be caught dead wearing ANYWHERE besides a gym or a beach.

Sitting here in Thailand (not using VPN) and I can view that thread just fine.

Illegal in Thailand. Seriously, don't even remotely think about it (or talk about it online)...unless you want to add incarceration in a Thai jail to the factors influencing your depression.

Any merchant charging an extra fee for customers using a credit card would lose my business instantly. That's the lowest of the low. Paying the card processing fees you have to pay (as a merchant) is part of the cost of doing business, deal with it. And I'm a(n online) merchant myself--I have no problem paying Paypal 3.5% so I can accept credit cards through them. As others have noted, this is the 21st Century, not the 20th. Cash is dead. Not quite as dead yet in Thailand as it is in the West, but (thankfully) that's coming.

I have done 100s of Transferwise transfer to Bangkok Bank and all show FTT. Not sure about other banks.
Yes, this is what shows on my gf's Bangkok Bank account every month when I send her money via Transferwise. Surprised me at first because it was my understanding (as another poster has mentioned) that the way Transferwise does it, it should look like a domestic transfer. Whatever they're doing, it's great, because no fee is taken by Bangkok Bank--and they used to take one in the past when I would send her Int'l (SWIFT) transfers.

You're being facetious, I assume. He stated himself that he's been in Thailand for 270 days (9 months) in the same year using tourist visas...he is most clearly NOT a tourist, he's living in Thailand, maybe technically not breaking the law, but certainly abusing the system.

In 1999, the first year I came to Thailand, one could expect 243 days per year over 32 degrees. Now, that number is 276 days. Source:

I don't think we can help you. If you believe in idiotic nonsense like "black magic" in your own culture, you're probably going to be a sucker and believe it in Thailand, too.
Oh, and the fact that you can apparently tell "good meth from bad meth," suggesting that you have a familiarity with meth, doesn't bode well for your probable IQ level.

Doesn't the OP have anything better to do with his time than rehash an old, tired, topic which has no "solution" or consensus possible....? Hmm, it's almost as if he decided to throw out something controversial and then watch as everyone predictably gets all riled up and argues about it...if only there were a word for that. Is there? I seem to remember one, starting with the letter "T"...

The "small" problem being...American citizens who have dark skin being murdered by police for forging a check? Hundreds of years of empowering a small band of racists (with badges) to murder African Americans at will? Is that what you're saying?
