I'm now 73 and started collecting at 62 and my full payout would have started at 66 so I don't think your full payout will start at 65. I figured if I had money coming to me I want it now as I don't know what will happen to me tomorrow. I started collecting my company pension at 58. Got me early retirement in Thailand and I haven't worked a day since I was 58. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I'm the same age. I checked the SSA site and the difference between 62 and 65 was $700 per month. OP says that he doesn't "need" the money other than for minor things, so probably should just hang on.

How else will the elite get those sweet 60% profit margins?

Nobody invented a way to sell air, yet

Uhh..... An air separation plant separates atmospheric air into its primary components, typically nitrogen and oxygen, and sometimes also argon and other rare inert gases. The most common method for air separation is fractional distillation.    This is what Air Liquide, Praxair, Air Products and other companies do, basically they are selling "air".

Nope.  One of my first rules of living in Asia is just because it happened to me, doesn't mean it happened to someone else.  (That's actually a corollary of "Just because he got away with it last year, doesn't mean I will this year").

I can't recall, in 15 years as a traveling salesman with up to 200 nights a year in hotels, ever being allowed to stay without paying in advance or presenting a credit card to assure payment.  But that doesn't mean someone else staying in other hotels haven't.  It doesn't even mean it's never happened to me and I forgot.

So I'm going with my moniker-  I could be wrong.  It happens.

I used to work at hotels and can't see renting to anyone without payment up front or a valid credit card. I can just imagine upon checkout that the guest tries to pay and his card is declined due to insufficient funds or maybe the card is damaged. Now what? I just don't see this happening. Especially the hotels in heavy tourist areas they know that people frequently overspend and then if there is nothing to charge to, the guest could sneak out on the bill, still, I'd like to know the name of that hotel.

... so somewhat in the same issue... if your reserve a room with your credit card, and you don't show or call to cancel, can the hotel charge you for the entire days reserved?

Yes, they had to keep the room unsold, because you might turn up and want your room. If you called to cancel, they might be able to release the room to be rented to potential guests.

anybody have any experience of this or know anything about hotel management?

Yes. This guest assumed that the manager has a crystal ball and knows that he "intended" to stay for the full three-week duration. He would have had rights if he paid in full in advance. You can do a walk up booking without reservations, but normally the hotel should have cleared the time versus booked reservations. Like, you can only stay until the 30th, but the hotel is fully booked past this time. Apparently, that is what he is on about.

    where to stay for free.

Yeah, I can see where a lot of tourists do a runner and pack up and leave before dawn, especially if they are flying out or leaving the country, hotel can't get paid like that, or the guests claim poverty and never had the cash. I can't see hotels operating like that.

we planned to stay 3 weeks

I used to work at a hotel, until you put your money down, it is not a guarantee. You could intend to stay for the 3 weeks, yet, you could just leave at any time, so it's not firm on YOUR part until you pay for the full three weeks in advance. I also used to work construction where I stayed weekly or monthly, around holidays I always asked the hotel if they were going to be busy during that period and would pay to ensure that I had a place to stay, or I would have advance knowledge to make other arrangements.

difference being, when they were done reading their paper, they spoke to each othe

True, plus a newspaper is a finite number of pages, whereas a phone you can access millions of pages of information, videos, movies, fakebook, etc. I miss the days of newspapers and hate videos.

Yawn.  I remember the same being said when people first starting using mobile phones and I remember my parents saying the same thing about television.

True, but your TV was limited to the length of the power cord. Now you go and meet friends at the bar and they spend the evening staring into their phone. Might as well go alone, or stay at home and stare at the laptop.

  10. I wonder if they scam knowing that most are just here on vacation and won't say anything. And they don't give a flip as they assume you won't be back. At least, if I don't pay in advance, I will ask what the price is, this goes for drinks as well as food vendors on the beach or whatever. What is 90 baht now, an hour later will be 180 if you don't ask and assume the price is the same.

  11. Although unrelated, here is a guide from Apple that shows typical manufacturer's criteria for reimbursing or authorizing repairs as to what is covered and what is not. Like for example, I had a customer that modified his machine and then wanted repairs under warranty. I contacted the mfg and they refused to supply parts and voided the rest of his warranty, I reluctantly called the customer and of course the customer was not happy.

This actually does make some sense. Do you if all major manufacturers refuse to give any warranty for PCBs or is it just LG?

All manufacturers further limit warrantees for PCB and other ancillary parts by limiting availability of parts to "authorized dealers" to prevent small businesses from selling the parts as well as repair manuals to the end user, its just too much of a pain in the ass. And its difficult to become authorized by a mfg, also, I would get people dragging in machines from other mfg, but I would refuse as I couldn't get the parts; if I was not authorized. And if its not a big selling machine, the mfg might have ended support already, so they don't want the customer knowing that they can't get parts for their "expensive" machine. I've had it where I call the mfg, and they say, that is at the end of its life cycle, offer the customer a refurb or remmaned model of same or "similar" model
