  1. So if I publish your credit card details, is that ok? After all, I won't be using your card, as I'll leave that to others.

    Ridiculous analogy... absurd.

I agree, that is a ridiculous things to say. Apart from the fact that you would have committed a crime by stealing someone's card details (in theory no-one would give you them freely) your role is not the same in this scenario. If you were the one to upload the data to the internet, you are distributing. Unless Gottfrid Svartholm was physically uploading all of the data to his site, his role does not compare to you publishing anyone's credit card details. The crime is not downloading, it's distributing. When you download a file you are simultaneously sharing it. That's the illegal part. I have an idea to test your analogy. Get your hands on the credit card details of 1000 people and post them on your facebook page, let's see who gets arrested and prosecuted, you or facebook. You could put the details in a zip file and email them out, again let's see who gets in to trouble, you or your ESP. Better still, avoid breaking the law completely and just post your own credit card details, no law broken there...The entertainment industry are just pissed off because technology has caught up with them and people can see their stuff for free. The argue that it's killing their industry but it doesn't stop them paying their top stars millions of dollars per film. It doesn't stop most people going to the cinema, buying a DVD or CD. 90% of the time the quality of a download is not to the same standard as the original and the bought items of often have the added extra's that people will pay for. You might say that the less well known artists rely on CD sales to make their money. One of the best forms of marketing that they could hope for is 1000's of people downloading their stuff for free. This is the best distribution for them, their peers are sharing their music...Anyway, I look forward to getting a copy of your credit card details. Cheers.

  2. Nice.... For a botte of red wine costing 500 baths We will now pay 620... 140 % increase !

Do they realise that this is a commercial suicide ?

How do you work that out?

Really? It's a 24% increase. The difference of 120 between the two prices is 24% higher than the starting price. If it was increased by 140%, you would be paying 500+700 (140% of 500). 1,200 for a bottle of wine?

  3. Unfortunately Booze and Obesity problems in Thailand is a good example on how Yingluck policy went wrong.

She should tax more on food and booze to reduce unnecessary consumption.

What an odd thing to say. Why should those who don't over eat and don't drink excessively pay more for their food and drink? What about the poor who can barely afford to eat to live? Think again. Your statement actually annoyed me with it's short sightedness and complete lack of thought.

  4. This is horrible. The place looks like a dump, too. I don;t know why they don't try and establish the what race the person was that the DNA came from. It has been done before in America to catch a serial killer. At least that would narrow down the search and rule out the innocent..

I just found this, the work on DNA done in the USA

    http://www.wired.com/politics/law/magazine/16-01/ps_dna

  5. Are you worried to be dry for 2 days ? Lol

Yes, actually I am. What does it matter to you? After 4 months with a broken leg and just being given clearance to walk without assistance and 5 days off from work, I'd like to enjoy my time off. This is a cause for celebration. Let's add to that ... My girlfriend has just gotten her visa approval to visit the US in October to meet my family. Also, one of my best friends is moving to Bangkok. Yeah, it does kind of bother me, as I am not Buddhist.

Sounds like you need a drink. Why get annoyed about something that is so easily resolved? That person was making a joke. Drink in hotels or drink in the house with all of your friends. Are you a bit stressed out about your girlfriend meeting your parents? It's quite understandable. There is no need to take it out on someone having a joke with you...Be careful when you are drinking, you don't want to fall over a break something...stay in and relax with a few beers, it's probably safer. ;-)

  6. This is weird. People are saying that respect for the feelings of the family should be shown. By all accounts his family are Thai and his child is 3 years old...I don't think that they will be on here reading this thread. It's also hard to feel any emotion for the death of someone that we have never met, sad fact, but true. Why was he naked? Why was there blood on the 3rd floor and he was found on the 1st floor? How did the American get in? Did the man open the door naked or did he open the door with his clothes on and then get naked once the guy was there? Was this American a lover?

If we are to be without judgement and just state the facts here, a 66 year old man marrying a 27 year old girl has to be considered unusual. Without judgement...

What is more unusual is the fact that he decided to have kids. We are way beyond the mid life crisis stage, here. It would lead me to question the wisdom and moral compass of such a person...The relationship is acceptable in this day and age, two consenting adults with their own motivations should be allowed to pursue their own dersires...why have children?

As far as this man is concerned, he had 66 years of experience under his belt and still decided to marry a 27 year old woman...He clearly did not read this forum...

People on here have the right to offer their sympathies for a life lost but, let's not ignore the facts...If this murder is going to be solved by the police, they will need to know the man himself.

The facts are: 72 year old retired estate agent, married someone young enough to be his grand daughter, has a child of his own that is young enough to be his great great grand daughter, divorced his grand daughter and found naked beaten in his own house, with no signs of forced entry and has been known to be 'friendly' with another male. It took 3 days for him to be discovered, so clearly, after 6 years has not managed to acquire a group of concerned friends...

Save you sympathies for people who actually wake up in the morning, live a life that is honest and just, surround themselves by people that they genuinely love and love them back. If we live our lives making bad, selfish, childish, hedonistic, egotistical decisions we should expect, at some point, for it to bite us in the ass...He had a good run..

It's all too weird. On the other hand, it's quite possible that he was the nicest and purest man on earth who just happened to move to Thailand, marry his grand daughter, father his great great grand child and get mixed up with a crazy American boxer, if that is the case I stand corrected...

  7. Every state in the USA has news like this everyday. Thailand is safer than the USA any day.

Violence is violence in all parts of the world. Maybe Thailand is to scary for you?

You're right. There is violence like this all over the world.

But I suspect my chances of being randomly killed just going about my boring, daily life are much higher in Thailand than the USA.

Of course, I'm an upper-middle age (old), suburban domiciled, office worker that doesn't drink, doesn't do drug transactions, and doesn't have a habit of going out looking for trouble.

If you look behind the simple numbers of crime in the USA, those attributes seem to put me at pretty low risk of violence in the USA. I'm not so sure about here in Thailand.

And, of course, it's not just violence- it's traffic, electrocutions, factory accidents, fire fatalities, risks of falling into unmarked sinkholes, getting clotheslined by low hanging wires across the sidewalks and streets, and on and on...

It will be interesting if we ever get the full story behind this shooting, but I suspect we never will.

Mate, I am sorry to hear that you are so unhappy and so afraid. No-one should be that afraid of where they live. If you need any help getting the money together to get back home I am sure that people could get together and help you. You must have some friends that would help you out of the hell hole that you are in. I know, I know, just because you are paranoid doesn't mean that they are not out to get you, but, low hanging cables, electricity and traffic might be kinder and less calculating in your country of birth. Good luck and all the best...

  8. Hmm, who in Pattaya has a short temper and likes to attack teachers....... I don't think Pattaya is a dangerous place unless you walk around in dimly lit areas with 5 baht of gold on you.

So, we only have ourselves to blame if we happen to be wearing something of value and get attacked and robbed (and probaly beaten with a metal bar)?

This kind of attack has become far too frequent, and it appears that the attackers are using such heavy implements with the intention of ensuring that their victims do not survive to identify them.

Your comment is nonsense..! It's like saying that girls deserve to be raped if they are not covered up from head to foot....!! Do they deserve all they get, as this teached did...?!?

I think that the original comment was meant to be sarcastic.

  9. We obviously have to seperate this between Europeans and Americans since Euros pay more for everything (besides healthcare) which they love telling you is FREE... just don't ask them "If it is FREE, how do the doctors get paid?"... From the government. "And where does the government get the money to pay them?".

I took that as bit antagonistic, to be honest. Maybe because it's so late and I am sitting reading through this lot, I am a little edgy. It did seem a little bitter towards the UK. Anyway, you are correct, we do pay our tax in order to fund the NHS and that is the ONLY thing I will miss about the UK when I leave. The department of taxation 'new ideas' team that seem to constantly think of new things to tax us on and it really pisses me off. It is just simply more expensive to live here. You need a car, that's a fact. If you work it and don't want to add 2 hours to your day on public transport, which is also becoming increasingly expensive, you need a car. Petrol hit £1.39 per litre this week. Car insurance. I have 5 years no claims bonus and I pay £680 a year to insure my car. The there is road tax. The only saving grace is that when I have a crash I can be hospitalised and treated for free!! ;-) I won't go into housing and council tax and food. I will say that you can eat really cheaply in the UK if you want to feed yourself crap food. They should put an increased tax on junk food and make it more affordable to eat healthy foods. There was a news item this week that reported on a 19 year girl who had to be cut out of her house to get to the hospital because she ate her way to 60 stones (840 pounds). She didn't do that eating organic chicken breast and broccoli. Anyway, enough of this.

  10. you know its hot in thailand ...When the cheap charlies buy two bottles of Leo and sit out side the 7/11 all day

Just because some Thais are poor it is no reason to make fun of them. Maybe all they can afford is one or 2 bottles between the 3 or 4 of them.

Just because you are a westerner with more money doesn't give you the right to insult Thais who don't have any.

Perhaps you should consider moving on to a different country.

To be honest, wherever you live and whatever your social standing, if you are spending the last of your money on beer and wasting your day, ridicule and contempt should be expected.

  11. the second inquest confirmed two ‘impact marks’ on Mr. Attew’s head and five puncture marks on his back, penetrating 3 mm into the skin, and also bruising on his back and neck

I guess he did drown ............ after being beat unconcous and left for dead.

Kudos to the Police for their excellent detective work in a difficult case!

3mm is very shallow for puncture wounds to cause much damage; I wonder how wide they were. Where were the impact marks found on his head? There seems to be so many questions that are not being asked. Even I am wondering from so far away and with no personal connection to this gentleman. What was his blood alcohol level? Did they find any unusual drugs in his system? Could he have been drugged a lured away? Did he have any money or valuables on him? Why does his girlfriend, Aeae Sumpootong, look as though she may have been another person at birth? (trying to be delicate in case my instinct is wrong. I can't help but notice the bone structure of the shoulders, square jaw, the length of the of the arms and hand size)

Wow, this seems to be very dodgy.

  12. Open season on Farangs runs from Jan 1 to Dec 31 every year

Sensei, I am sorry but I don't understand your aggression towards Thailand. I think that maybe you had a bad experience and are now just trying to scare people away from going to visit. Thailand is about 9th on the list of murders per capita and I had never met a friendlier race of people to be around. Of course, as a foreigner they would like to part you from your money but generally do it in a way that you don't really take that much offence to. I don't even know the stats about New York city but I think that they are a little higher than the L.O.S. I understand that you may feel a little more comfortable being able to defend yourself but I always find that aggression towards Thai people and disrespect towards them always casues the situation to get worse. I know that if you find yourself in a situation that you cannot get yourself out of intellectually then, sometimes, you need to confront voilence with voilence, but I don't always think that this is the best policy. Martial arts teaches us that the last resort is to inflict pain on others.

    Be well.

  13. Hello all, some of you may already know if you have read 'A big thumbs up to Thai Visa', in the general topics section, (in fact, I recognise some of the names here from the thread in question) that I have recenlty found employment on Samui at the Emerald Irish bar and restuarant in Bophut (quick plug).

Don't worry, I am not touting for customers, yet. I leave the UK in 7 days and I want to find a good gym to check out when I get there.

I have done a Google search and looked at some maps of the island and have not found any good information. I have seen that there are a few 'health clubs' but I don't know whether these would be what I am looking for. I need a gym with free weights, as well as machines. Olympic barbells would be great but a smith machine will do. I would also like dumbells that go up to a good weight range, if they stop at 25kgs then they are falling short. A would also like a good supply of weight plates; enough so that if I someone is doing deadlift that eveybody else is not waiting for the plates. It doesn't have to be a fancy gym, just have the right gear and not be to scummy. Air con is very important in that climate as I have enough trouble not passing out at the moment, when I train.

I am actually a qualified personal fitness trainer, so if anybody needs any advice on training, diet etc. then pop in and see me. I am bringing my laptop with me and I have all types of workout plans for different goals and levels, or i could just put one together. It is not really that complicated to do, there are a core group of exercises, really, and then there are the variations of those exercises, which makes it a bit more complicated if you are a novice to resistance training. Anyway, I sound like I am touting again....not me; I will be too busy flogging my booze to keep people fit too.

Well, if anybody has any information that can help me narrow down my search when I arrive, then please let me know.

By the way, don't forget to come in and see me at the Emerald Irish bar and restuarant, I am there from the 14 th December - one show daily, two on Sunday's.

    Thanks in advance.

world gym in on chaweng ring road ,i belong to the chaweng regent hotel gym 10000b a year can also sit round there pool ,freee towels .works out around 25 baht a day ,take a bangkok post from the desk and thats free ,also get 10% off drinks and food ,30% off room rates for freinds etc.......

Thanks Lazeeboy, do either of the gyms that you mentioned have any of the facilites or equipment that I listed in my post?

  15. Oh don't forget the Mozzie repellent..... :D

    Cheers & Good Luck

and don't forget to keep us up to date,

feel free to PM me (though I'm in Phuket) I'd like to know how you get on

and I think the gas driven lap-top on my zimmer-frame will be OK for at least a year or so.

Thanks Unc. I will certainly keep you up-to-date on the progress of the Emerald. When I know, you will know (only you will more than likely forget a few minutes later - you started it!)

A gas powered laptop, hey? You have to move with the times old fella, you should get a solar powered one, like mine, they are all the rage. :o

  16. How about free grog for everyone by the jumbo

I would like the ThaiVisa members to give me some feedback of what they look for in a bar. What do you like? What do you hate? What would you like to see in your local bar that is not available at the moment? I want the bar to be appealing to local people as well as tourists. I would love to hear you point of view. I am open to all ideas. Bring them on!!!

Again, I want to give thanks to this forum (and my excellent interview techniques) for me getting this job. Thanks again all those involved.

I will be there from the 13th Decemeber, if you want to pop in and say "Hi".

    Mark....

I am sorry jumbojumbo, we don't sell grog at the Emerald Irish bar, we only sell quality alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, served with a cheeky smile and a twinkle in the eye. These beverages include; fine lagers and ales and a selection of wines, for the ladies. :o Hope to see you there.

  17. I just wondered if you have been to Koh Samui before and what research you have done prior to accepting this position.

Oh & BTW Best of Luck.

P.S. The lads in the football forum will be interested in which team you follow. !

Yes, I have been to Koh Samui before, twice, I liked it. I went to Koh Tao too and did my PADI. I have also tried Bangkok for a month and Chiang Mai for 5 months. Of the four places that I would wish to work Samui is my first choice.

I am not sure about the research you are referring to, please tell me.

As regards the football; do you think I would tell you that in an open forum? I am not really a follower, anyway. On match day, though, I intend to show as many matches as I am able to, which means that I have to stay neutral really.

    Thanks for the good wishes.

I was refering to things like :-

    Work Permit

    Housing or Accommodation

    Health and/or travel Insurance

Cost of Living in Koh Samui

    Thai language

    Thai culture & religion

    Friendly Support

    Low-Season/High-Season difference

and most importantly Fallback or retreat situation

bearing in mind Murphy's Law (Or Sod's if you prefer)

Forewarned is Forearmed, and any knowledge you can aquire early on will stand you in good stead.

I am not meaning to put you off, the choice is yours. I merely want to help make you aware of some of the pitfalls that you may come across when choosing to live here as against holidaying here. (Chalk and Cheese comes to mind)

    Cheers

    From an old Uncle

Thanks for your concern uncle LeungKen, you have always been my favourite (despite the faint smell of ammonia that seems to follow you around)

As regards your questions, I will try and answer them in order.

Work Permit - My new bosses lawyer is sorting it out.

Housing or Accommodation - The house is sorted for me.

Health and/or travel Insurance - Last time I went away I got a backpackers policy for 180 days. It was sufficient. I will investigate further when I arrive.

Cost of Living in Koh Samui - I know that it is considerably less than the UK. I am not too sure about the supermarkets (you could shed some light on this for me) but I know what the cost of the average meals is.

Thai language - Didn't manage to pick up too much language on previous trips. I will try harder this time.

Thai culture & religion - I am familiar with the religion and culture. I am no expert but find that if I am respectful to others then it helps to make up for what I lack in knowledge

Friendly Support - My new bosses seem very friendly. I have a few friends in Thailand. I am quite used to being independant and like to explore alone mostly. If all else fails, there is always Skype.

Low-Season/High-Season difference - I have only ever been between October and March. I know that the weather changes outside of those times but, in comparison to the weather in the UK, I am quite prepared for a rainstorm or two.

and most importantly Fallback or retreat situation

bearing in mind Murphy's Law (Or Sod's if you prefer) - Always expect the best but prepare for the worst. I have made all the necessary arrangements and have all of the means to get back to the UK if I need to.

Do you think that I have missed anything? Let me know please.

    Thanks again, Unc. :o

  18. Here's to aiming high....

Of which massive company are you the director?

In this country #1 actually. There is only one person in the intire country with my level of academic training in my field. There are only 40 people in Thailand with a Masters degree in my field. I hold a doctorate.

As far as director of a company: My rank is somewhere around #2 in the company. I am pretty much untouchable due to the rareity of my degree in Thailand. It is actually pretty rare in the states too.

The massive company, is the largest in Thailand, in this specific market that we are in. The company has been in exsistance for 20 years now, and employs over 100 people. We are a multi-million dollar company. Currently we have 2 subsidary companies, and developing two more at the moment.

and even then still, my father is still not satisfied.... and neither am I.... yet.

Firstly, this was not the point of this post. I am pleased that you are the director of the number one company in Thailand, what is the company called? What is your field of training, I am intrigued?

"one person in the intire country with my level of academic training in my field". I take it that it isn't English because the entire country is in trouble if it is.

"As far as director of a company: My rank is somewhere around #2 in the company. I am pretty much untouchable due to the rareity of my degree in Thailand. It is actually pretty rare in the states too."

Your Christmas company party must be fun, just the three of you.

Are you really so proud of being top of a field that nobody else wants to do?

Well done in getting a doctorate, you must be very intelligent; maybe even a genius in your very rare field. I have always wondered what a genius does in his spare time and now I know. ThaiVisa is honoured that you could spare the time to comment on this, very normal, subject. I hope Stephen Hawkins posts something, that would make my day.

If you are even on Koh Samui, pop in for a drink.

Thanks again, for your time, Number 2.

I was asked what company rank director blah blah. I figured the punters would come along with my response, and as guessed I am not an English teacher. Yes I do have a doctorate in my field, and no I am not a genius, having a doctorate does not mean you are a genius. If anything, I am stuborn, and slowly made it though school. Do you know what a JDD is? It is a doctorate degree, do you think lawyers are of genious caliber? I don't.

Am I proud I have a degree no one else wants to do....? Eh, it has paid well.... so there is that. Are you proud to get a job that essentially anyone else could do? Oh wait, you are because you posted this thread. So good for you.

I would not doubt you could get a doctorate too if that was you goal.

But instead you have settled on being a bar manager... that is your perogative. So deal with it, rather than trying to smear those that have done more in life. More as in economics acadimics.... But really so what? I promise you, each achievment required sacrifice. Each ball game you saw, I did not. Each night out you had, I did not. Each romp in the snow, or fun in the sun, I doubt I got it.

My son is growing up without me ....

So go pour your drinks, and enjoy your life... do with it what you please.

You have absolutely no idea what my academic achievements are. Why did you feel the need to insult me or my choices? You have made an assumption about me without any historical information at all.

It was you that gave the impression that having a doctorate made you a genius (please not the correct spelling). You still didn't tell me what company you work for and what you actually do, have you forgotten?

I am not trying to smear you and I don't know what you have done with your life. I, unlike you, am not making assumptions. I do know that happy people would not post what you did. At least you have your degree to harp on about at any chance. When you say that anyone could do a bar manager's job; do you mean you? Do you know what the job entails? Do you think with your attitude you would have any customers?

The original idea for this posting was to acknowledge the fact that my moving to a new job and new phase of my life is partly due to this forum. I also wanted to give an open invitation to all ThaiVisa members to drop in and see me at my new job but now I only want to see non-condescending people please, who like to enjoy life.

Let's end this here, shall we, before I have to correct anymore of your spelling. Even if you do not have the ability to spell (and I am open to the possibilty that you may have some kind of condition, which is beyond your control), you should have the self-respect to check your spelling with another source before posting on an open forum. Even if anyone believed that your specialist subjects were not bitterness, arrogance, envy and frustration; you totally lose credibility when you can't spell 'academic', especially, when you are using it to describe how much more you have achieved, academically. Try and be nice to people and they will be nice back to you, mostly.

    'acadimics' -- academics

    'achievment' -- achievement

I think what I have just said to you may get me suspended from this site but it needed to be said. Don't judge me, you don't know me.

  19. Here's to aiming high....
