THAILAND’S WORST-CASE PLAN FOR CORONAVIRUS REVEALED

    https://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/crimecourtscalamity/2020/02/20/thailands-worst-case-plan-for-coronavirus-revealed/

"Crowded facilities like schools, prisons, and military bases will also be shut down in order to contain the virus under the plan."

Think they are preempting an ANNOUNCEMNT.  Likely, a jump in infected patients? Possibly at end of today? My guess is good as people in this forum.

Shut down prisons means they get a free "get out of jail" card, kind of like Monopoly?!

Long school break coming up anyway.  Only 1 or 2 weeks left till the summer hols...

So, balloons, rockets and commercial jets.

That sounds like a really safe mix. ????

Commercial jets?  It's taking place in some dry rice paddy fielda on the opposite side of the valley from CNX

It didn't seem important before 2019 as it was only March that was bad.

But now it starts in December and lasts until April.

One month of poor air I can stand, but not 5 months.

Disagree with that.  Last year was the first year the pm figures went sky high, but always been a problem for at least 3 months of the year.  It's only in the last 2 or 3 years that pm2.5 sensors became common place.   Now we have unhealthy air for 7 months of the year.

Not wanting to steal Chiang Mai's thunder but I have just checked my AirVisual app on my phone and the reading for Tara Pattana International school ( Pattaya) which is only 500 meters or so from my village is currently 138, strangely, the stand alone machine sitting in my lounge is only reading 33, we are in the middle of the village and away from the road, I have a feeling that the school sensor maybe close to the road which is very busy and there also some Thai food stalls not far away so plenty of pollutants in the area.

Your machine is probably giving the pm2.5 concentration.  Airvisual app shows AQI.  Not the same.  Some of the chinese sensors people buy also show aqi, but don't use the international standard conversion.

The poor air quality in the Northern Thailand isn't getting a lot of attention in the media. The main focus is on corona virus. The long term health damage of inhaling polluted air on a daily basis doesn't appear to be of a concern to the Govt. They give the topic the occasional lip service, but nothing is ever done. We had a few clear days last week, but according to some Thai friends that was only due to a member of the royal family visiting Chiang Mai. So they can control the burning if they really want to.

There was also quite a nice bit of wind from the south, that helped.

Good news for the ex-pats who live there though.  Plenty of good reasons to live in Chiang Mai, especially if you have a family and want a normal lifestyle.  Easy enough to get to places with a livelier, debauched nightlife if that is what you want.  One of the pluses of CM is that you have a great airport, good schools and hospitals and plenty of very good affordable restaurants.

It's all about horses for courses.

Agree with all that.  I live here with family & enjoy the outdoor life in the hills around us.  Only problem is that now we have 7 months of toxic air.  Used to be less, but not anymore.

You are treated by doctors in hospital the same as in a clinic - it is the doctors that ask for tests and provide treatment.  Most doctors prefer hospital setting as tests/MRI/CT/X-Ray and such are easily available and they can call on other specialists to check and review what they are not up to date on.

We've got a couple of good GPs in Chiang mai.  I'll continue to vist them, thank you ????

  8. I personally, prefer the 2 GPs mentioned here.  Both very competent & recommend both to friends.  I don't trust the hospitals as they are big business & make heaps of money recommending unnecessary tests & treatment.

If I have a problem I go to one of the 2 GPs & trust their recommendations if specialists required.

I'd avoid the Non-OA route simply to avoid the health insurance requirement.  Simply come in on the 30-day exemption and convert to a Non-O from there (and then later back to the annual extension based on retirement).  No sense in my view of getting a Tourist Visa in your home country (only an extra expense and hassle and you'd still have to convert to a Non-O here).

Don't you need an onward ticket if entering on visa exempt?
