  1. I'm travelling to Bangkok in a couple of days and am looking for suggestions for a good way to convert and carry canadian funds for my trip. The most efficient way suggested to me is to "overload" my credit card and then simply make withdrawals from an ATM.  The downside is that I would still be billed a flate rate $7.50 each time plus a 2.5% of the amount.

Has anybody got better ideas? My thanks for all contributions.

Well, I don't know where cryingdick is from but I suspect that he's not aware that Canada is a nation of laws. So there may be legal impediments to Trudeau simply cancelling a deal by fiat.

I am sure there are "legal Impediments", but if our gloryboy wants to take a moral stand, he shouldnt let a few billion hard earned tax dollars prevent some unilateral action stand in the way. I guess the old saying goes something like: "you can't have it both ways".

  3. Well done Sam!

You must have already done something that works.

I did something really stupid to help me quit. It was a dark and gloomy night in Calgary on New Years Eve when I again made a predictable resolution... to of course...stub a butt for the last time. Who doesnt make some outrageousresolution like that on New Years Eve?  Well, it only took me a couple days to realize, that while living with a few smoking roomies, I would have to do something a little more extreme to help me get on with it.

There was a community swimming pool a couple of blocks away, which I passed nearly every day. without paying it much mind. But since i had time to kill, I went in and grabbed a schedule.

The next day, I bought a bathing suit and some goggles and went back to swim. The first week was a lot of splashing and coughing..... but I wasnt smoking!..the following week, I swam an entire length of the pool, nonstop!  That winter I spent so much time in the pool, I actually got to the point where I was swimming over a mile at a time, nonstop. I just wanted to spend so much time in the pool, so i wasnt able to smoke.

It seemed to have worked.. its been almost 40 years now, and the thought of smoking does nothing more than amuse me a bit.. which is a long way from a 2+ packs a day habit!

Get wet my friend! would be my prescription.

  4. I was interested in the Canadian retiree who mentioned his pensions being taxed at a higher rate if no Canadian address is on file. Does that include OAP and CPP? I'm pretty sure i want to retire in Thailand, but would be very disappointed if my pensions would amount to less than I receive now. Are there any other stipulations on the above I should consider?

I agree with the expats who say don't burn bridges and keep an address in your home country. In the case of Canada if you don't have a Canadian mailing address all and any pensions are reduced.Even military pensions are taxed at a higher rate.

Reading this and so many other posts, and conflicting advice,  people need not wonder why some just give up and go and live somewhere else, or never seriously consider Thailand, past doing an bit of research on the visa and stay process.  Three of my friends, previously planning to retire to Thailand have given up on this place and located  to other hot/sunny locations.  All have been welcomed in their new home countries with a very easy long term visa/stay process, that doesn't include jumping through ever changing and complex hoops just to stay and spend their retirement money.  Maybe one day Thailand will  wake up, buck up and try to accommodate retirees who bring wealth and investment into the country,  but I somehow doubt that will ever happen.  If it wasn't for my close family connections here,  and a promise made many years ago to a lady who has stood by me for that length of time, I wouldn't consider living here for a minute.

    Hey Pilot,

Would you care to expand on the info given, as in the names of these "other hot/sunny locations" that three of your friends have located to? I'm sure a lot of readers would be interested in alternatives!

    Thanks

  6. Not doing yourself any favours when you come on here supposedly looking  for general advice after insulting most of the subscribers here.

I think you may have already "outlasted your stay".

Do yourself and everyone else a favour and just stay put.

You can easily get a 10K studio or even some 1 beds in the On Nut area. I handle thes every day. Some brand new nicely furnished buildings sand some modestly furnished 6-10 year old buildings. Jack Spratt you can PM me for details and viewing.

Some of you dear folk need to get out more.

    Hi Queen,

I would also benefit from any information/ pictures etc regarding decent (cheap) accomodation in the On Nut area. Thanks.

  8. The situation of foreign ownership in Canada is appalling! People are being evicted out of their houses, so developers can tear down the houses to erect huge condo buildings to satisfy the overseas speculators that have seen prices triple even before ground is broken. Meanwhile, the renters are at the mercy of other landlords who then jack up the rental cost, to take advantage of the diminished supply.

The Real Estate market seems to offer a safer, better return for offshore money than the bank, or even laundering it through casinos.

Too bad that governments--other than New Zealand's---only look at the foreign investment as a stroke to their policies. Too bad some governments can't see the real damage this is causing. Soon, only foreign nationals will be the only people able to afford to live in Vancouver.

  9. I plan on visiting a few asian countries for holiday in the new year. My itinerary is very loosely planned, as i don't know how long I will want to stay in each of the different countries. I understand, though,  that I must have a return ticket in order to get a visa. This might be a problem as per my loose schedule. Also, I may want to arrive in Bangkok, but after some moving about, not necessarily  departing home to Canada from Bangkok. I may want to return to Canada from Hanoi or from Cambodia. Would that complicate my plans too much?

    From Wikipedia:

So, it looks like you simply withdraw from your RRSP to a Canadian bank account (less withholding tax) and wire the money to your bank account in Thailand.

    Thanks OXX,

I am trying to avoid paying tax on a lump sum withdrawal. The only way i could see that happening is by transferring it between a Canadian bank  and  a branch of the same bank in Thailand. Then I could access funds a little at a time, the same way I would in Canada, thereby avoiding the lump sum tax penalty. I just haven't been able to find such a bank, with a Thai branch.
