For a Tuk-Tuk, Expect 2x to 3x the price you would pay in Bangkok IF you ask first.  If you don't ask, that goes up to 5x+ overcharge.  Also, when you disembark, they will try to drive away without giving you your change.

Also be prepared that if going to your hotel with luggage (he can see you are not checked-in yet), the driver may have a "preferred hotel," and harangue you the entire way to accept his "advice" on a "better" hotel.  The more well-known ones tip them out, over and above the rip-off rate you just paid him.

Dealing with the rude Tuk-Tuk drivers (mafia) is by-far the worst aspect of the whole "Lao experience" in Savanakhet or Vientiane.

... and the local food (which I prefer) is also sold at rip-off prices - 3x to 4x Thai prices printed right on the menu in Kip - so do the math, before you order - or even sit-down.

Never been harassed by tuk tuk anywhere in Laos. Yes, they ask, but then go to the next one if you say no.

Also, I will never trust anyone eating any Lao food then complaining about the price: of course it is more expensive, but how ridiculous can be someone to it Lao food that is just Thai food without the taste. Especially when so much western food at good price is available everywhere in Laos.

Pilgrim's kitchen has a whacky open mike night on Wednesday I think. Or they did about 9 months ago. Best place to stay as well, good clean rooms in a newly renovated old French colonial house, nice food and coffee in the cafe downstairs, nice people running the place and staff have a good attitude. Sort of a backpacker vibe, so if you have that kind of allergy that causes you to go apopleptic at the sight of hippies  then maybe something else is your speed, but not too many options in Savannakhet, so either that or maybe some dusty semi-dirty place at non-bargain prices.

Not too many hotels ? You haven't checked agoda and booking it seems...

Savanakhet is still a shoootehole but hotels and food are getting better, there are so many westernized restaurants now, but they are all overpriced compared to Thailand.

I don't think google  or TA would give up your identity very easily.

But better set up a pseudo account that can't be traced to you. Obviously do no use your real name.

    Funny you :-)

All big websites give personal data to authorities on simple request.

Do you think that they want to be ban from any country ? So they just comply. Google and facebook first, maybe they even send data without being asked ! They are the worst snitches rats of the world.

The official visa fee is $30. If you fly into Phnom Penh, you will pay just $30.

I don't understand your comment as I never claimed to have paid only $30. Perhaps you misread. I said I aim for $35. This is possible.

I note you are quoting prices in Baht. If you pay in US$ in which the visa is officially priced, you will make savings.

Again you appear to have misread. Be aware you need to pay off 2 counters. First the visa counter who also stamp you in. Then, second, the departures counter, who enforce the U-turn fee. 50 Baht is entirely possible at this second desk (departures) at Ban Laem. Their starting bid is 100 Baht! The larger bribe is the first counter, the visa on arrival and stamp in. I believe you have confused the visa bribe + the U-turn bribe with just the U-turn bribe. All up $7 would be a good result, $5 at the first desk (visa and stamp in) and $2 at the second desk (departures). The only reason to amalgamate the two bribes would be if you used the "form-filling service". Use them and you will pay at least 1700 Baht including the visa price. You need to separate out the two separate bribes.

Wrong. Did it dozens times and only paid at 1 counter. And many people that I know also.

Never ever heard people paying at 2 desks. So I repeat that I managed to pay only 200 and only at one desk. I do not use visa services, I am not 100% retarded yet :-)

To be honest situations like this don't get me stressed.

I always have an idea about how long it can take or how short a time it can take.

I believe it's a rule in the Cambo' rules and reg' book that you should officially stay one night when you enter so paying a little bit extra to 'get around' that rule doesn't get me all bitter and twisted.

Nobody in the world can force you to stay at least 1 night in any country ! How can somebody could even imagine that it is a written rule ? Ridiculous.

I have done this trip solo a number of times.

The Cambo visa is $30. That is 983 Baht. Thus the OP has paid bribes and unofficial filling in form fees of 917 Baht.

I empathise both with those who say, "never mind, just pay it, it is hassle-free," and those who say, "that is way too much." It depends on one's situation and view of life.

I can tell the OP that if he had stood his ground (I know it is stressful) that 917 Baht could have come down to about 300-400 Baht in 10 minutes. However, as soon as he went with the form-fillers his fate was sealed. To get the 300-400 Baht he must go and get his Cambo visa himself. I aim for $5 bribe for the visa so the visa is $35 and 50 Baht or $2 for the U-turn fee. So I try for about $7 in bribes. It seems a nice compromise of delay of only around 10 minutes and bribes of only $7. Pay in $1's very slowly and keep cool.

In a moment, someone will come along and say they never pay a bribe and tell everybody how they faced down the Cambo Immigration Officers. Maybe it is possible, but try that and you may well have yourself a very long unpleasant wait.

You never paid only $30 for visa.

Even online it's $37 with fee.

You also never paid 50 thb to come back the same day. It's "officially" 300 but I was able to reduce it to 200 and nobody has ever paid less.

    OP you've been scammed

I always go there with a visa run company, never have this issue, they target those who do the trip themselves

YOU have been scammed also ! By using a ridiculous visa company

Because of course they include the Cambodia fee in your price.

But isnt this the problem with reviews? If you read them something like 90% + are just opinions, theres no actual facts there. They are all based on a personal perception/experience. That's why I place NO value on either reading them or receiving them. Even the reviews with facts in do not mean those facts apply to the next customer. It was one persons experience nothing more. Then an individual comes along and writes a REALLY factual review...like a competitor or a disgruntled employee who will use anything negative they know about to try and cause your business damage, and that review takes prominence in the review readers mind. The only counter to this is hundreds and hundreds of positive reviews, so then big businesses resort to professional review writers and the overall picture about that business becomes very cloudy indeed. Small business then become disadvantaged as they don't have the same marketing budget to pay people to write nonsense all day long. If your using reviews to make your judgement calls as to which service you choose that's your choice, but word of mouth  from friends, colleagues and even customers is a far better way to find great service and great products.

When people see coackroaches and rats in a restaurant it's a fact. Even if the next customer do not see them, they were here (especially if the reviewer adds a photo).

Its not about the money?  Then why try to boast about what you are paying for?

I hope some are not being steered in the wrong direction based on comments about this Visa.

The 90 day reporting you still have to do it is so simple and has never taken me more then 20 minutes.  So that is 80 minutes a year and you say elite assisting with this makes it worth it?  So 100,000 b a year for 80 minutes worth of your time?? Where is the convenience?

My recent year extension took me all of an hour.

The 800 k that yes is in the bank.  But lets see, you are giving them 500,000 you will never see again so.....

The income verification again took me 30 minutes at my embassy.

Good luck with it but seriously, I hope those thinking about jumping at this Visa seek some sound sensible financial guidance.

What you do not understand is that 100000 thai baht / year = free for so many of us ?

    understand ?

I struggle to understand the benefits of this visa- a retirement permit once a year costs B1900, over ten years this is B19000. Ten multiple entry permits are another 38k.

Either way one still has to do the 90 day reports and notification of address every time you go out of your main residence to another place within or without Thailand.

People who do the notification of address are just funny people in my opinion.

I never did it and will never do it, with ANY visa.

And usually people who do not understand the benefits or TE are just too poor to understand...

when I want to book somewhere I always look at the ratings of the place and read the reviews. I realize some people are incapable of writing an honest review and you can easily pick them as you read them all. I also write an honest review after staying/eating/visiting the place in question as I would expect others to do also. Last thing I want is people writing bullsh*t reviews , if they are good they deserve to be given good ratings, if they are crap other people need to know, its common sense, if people want good ratings they will do the right thing if they dont they deserve what they get

People opinion is worth nothing for me. The only interesting points are FACTS.

How you like it or not is useless and even ridiculous to write.

This is what people who review will never understand.

For example, when staff at a resort is not so visible, some people complain saying that nobody cares, but for me, no staff = peace = I love it. I do not need anybody in my steps and the less I see people the more I am happy.
