  1. I would have said "la baksida" everytime he said the word foriegners....lol.

Then if he wanted to keep to his script without interruption he would have to omit it :o Or if he was a clever chappie he might even add "la baksida" in which case I would reply with kaup khun na krup everytime.

Training by inconvenience I call it.....lol

  2. If it was me. I would contact the provider and get them to supply a solution.

Your paying for a service which is unusable much of the time. :o

I would suggest to them that it would be very nice and I would be forever thankful...become a budhist, etc...if they could send an engineer out to look at the problem and propose a solution.

Don't tell them you use a dialup if it fails..Just that the ADSL stops working after 630 pm. Don't tell them your thoughts (using that damned farang logic) let them work something out. They may only have to boost the line gain and the engineer will try that first. I agree that they probably won't put new poles up for but thay may move the wires to the other side of the pole if that proves sufficient.

Also. If all else fails, you want compensation....right? :D

If they can't work something out then suggest to them a discount on the basis that you are excruciatingly pleased with thier daytime service or perhaps a better package for no increase in price. Maybe even that they set your computers up to use modem back-up for when the ADSL goes down. Why do all the hard work when you've already payed someone else to do it :D

Be polite, patient and agreeable. I'm sure thay will sort someting out.

  3. I bought a Nokia 6280 in the UK expecting to unlock it here. The few shops I went to (inc. Nokia Care) said they couldn't. I bought some software on Ebay but the codes it gives me won't help either.

Has anyone managed to get a shop in Bangkok to successfully unlock one of these fandangled Nokia phones? It needs a long pin to do it.

    Thanks!!!

If it is a vodaphone locked one ya can try here.

    Voda Phone

Yes I know it's Australia..but worth a try for free eh?

    Who's the provider?

  4. Go to the start menu and open the run dialogue.

    Type in:

    "SFC /scannow".

This will check a lot of the system files and replace corrupted ones. Your update was quite a while ago and if you are only experiencing it now it is likely something you have installed recently (or someone has i.e your g/f :o.

  5. Don't ya just love M$. How long till they cripple windows untill you buy another licence?

All my windoze machines got the M$ wga (Windows Getting Arsey)...2 of which ARE genuine!

Well..Suffice to say I don't have any annoying pop-ups or reminders at boot any more and I still receive critical updates.

The answer? Google....the truth is out there.

.........Or you can pay someone like me (but closer to your locale) and they can do it in about 5 mins. It's not hard. I've had more trouble installing M$ office.

And for all the som nam na - ists out there, just remember, that it's not the users fault that the local PC shop bought 1 cd for 100 baht and sold 100 20K+ machines.

  6. It gets better. I have the same problem. I can't get through and they don't call back. So I went to the true shop thinking finally I can get some service. Their response: "you need to phone the call center" :D Back to square one.

Tell them to call on your behalf because you are stupid farang and they are intelligent Thai's who are far more superior...it works :D

Oh...and don't forget to ask lots of awkward questions after you get the result like, why couldn't I get through. What was the number they called and why isn't it the same number they told you to phone :o

  7. I actually have in excess of 2000 virii/worms/trojans and spyware on one of my machines.

Formatting and re-installing an OS is completely unnecessary AND, if you install Windows, you are likely to get 4 or 5 whilst your computer is contacting the M$ website for all the updates. The vast majority of virii/worms etc are installed by YOU! . (usually through cracks - serves you right - or email attatchments). There are a couple of clever ones out there.....but a robust firewall is more than a match for them.

Virii generally rely on users ignorance. But a well informed user with a firewall is virtually impregnable. Prevention is better than cure. Just don't get them in the first place.

2 easy tips for the un-initiated (will prevent most problems).

    1. Change the file association for VBS and VBE (visual basic scripts) to EDIT instead of OPEN (open is the default). If you do get a nasty script as an email attachment (regardless of the hidden extesions) it will harmlessly open it in notepad instead of executing. If you do really need to run VBS scripts (most people don't) you can always save it and then run it.

    2. if you see tinyftp.exe on your machine...delete it (this is the most common way trojans are propegated). you don't need it and if it comes back or you see it running in task manager, you can be 95% sure someone is trying to install a backdoor. Please note though that tinyftp.exe is distributed with windows but is only usually used by nefarious characters.

    Hope this helps.

    Flamers welcome :o

  8. Makes me laugh.....very loudly.

The UK has lived with terrorism for over 100 years (a lot of which was funded by American/Irish sympathisers). The US needs to get over it and move on.

As for big brother. I personally don't give a hoot about the FBI or CIA (or MI5 come to that) and I'm pretty sure they don't give a rats arse about me either.

I'd be more worried about the boys in brown who can't make thier monthly instalment for thier new motorbike or are running low on locau :o

  9. I changed about 2 months ago from 1-2-call because the service was intollerable (no chance of making or receiving calls after 7pm until about 2am in the morning....sometimes not at all).

I switched to True....best move I ever made. No problems phoning or connecting (unless phoning a Thai GSM phone...lol)

You buy a 99 THB sim which has 50 THB on it and then you get a bonus 30 THB (so you end up paying 19THB for the sim.

Also..everytime you recharge you get bonus credit (30THB for a 50 THB card, 100 THB for a 300 THB card).

They also have a promo which is 25 SATANG!!!! per minute (3 THB for SMS) 24/7.

I now have another problem though. I can't use my credit up fast enough before the expiry date. My phone now has 1200 THB credit just because I need the extra time. But like my old boss used to say...it's the right problem to have. :o

  10. This is exactly why I started my website.

Yes the list is good (in fact some of the agents are members of my site), but you still spend hours filtering through the different sites and their many listings trying to find one for you.

The other problem with these sorts of sites is that they don't cater much for the joe blogs thats not in one of the major centers (not Pattaya, Bangkok Phuket etc) and wants to get his property out to the public. What I would like to see more of are private people advertising thier own properties. This would give people looking for property more choice (especially in the non-commercial areas)and a better deal without inflatory prices.

  11. Why does a mortgage need a guarantor? The whole point is a mortgage is it's a secured loan with the house as collateral. And why is a lawyer involved? I personally know of 2 people that went this route, and they were not required to guarantee the payments.

If (and a big if) a guarantor is required, then let mumy and daddy sign on the dotted line. The whole purpose of this method is not to involve the farang at all. Of course. If the bank know there is a farang, they want you involved since they know you have money and are less likely to default. So they will come up with excuses so that they can get your money.

Perhaps input from one of the professionals on mortgages is in order.

  12. Technically. If you set up a business and it buys a house. You do not own it, the company does. You can rent it to yourself for a pittance but then the company will be liable for tax on that income (at the paperwork level anyway).

Also the company is required to submit tax returns and various documentation by a qualified accountant (along with a yearly audit) which in most cases makes it more expensive than renting normally.

Where a lot of people get caught out is that in signing documentation (as the director and signatory) you are in considered to be "working" and as you are highly visible to the authorities through the paper chain, if you don't have a work permit...your buggered.

The most ecomincal way (I think) is for farang not to buy a house at all, but get yer missus to obtain a motgage and pay the motgage while your with her (it's cheaper than renting). If things go tits up with her (or you find yourself in difficulties) you can just leave and let the next farang take over the rent. No fuss. No mess, and it's likely you will still be on good terms with her after.

  13. OK.

So it boots into the OS...not MB problem. Everything does work (maybe slower but thats a different issue).

Did the hard-drive LED light up when the drive was accessed? If not check the LED connecor is correctly placed.

If you also tell us where you are, maybe there is someone close that can help (which is probably what you really want...lol).

  14. A PC with just the bios showing is no use to you. You might as well turn it off. You can also exit and not save changes and it should just continue without rebooting so you can see if you can get into the OS. If all this works then it's probably the power button since you have power for the fans etc (is the button the latching type?).

Usually if it boots straight into the bios (without pressing any buttons) it's because the bios clock isn't set. If this is the case, set the time and save changes. If it goes back in again because the time is reset again, then you only need to change the battery on the MB (big silver watch type one).

the easy answer is to take it back to the shop and don't take it back until they prove it's working. It's their problem.

  15. I always choose AMD, mainly because of better game compatability/performance.

Dollar for dollar the AMD's tend to be a better option. The choice is somewhat personal.

AMD's also have huge overclocking capabilities nowadays in comparison to the Intel but thats only if your an overclocking junkie like me (just replaced MB and CPU on my 3rd budget PC because the AMD Athlon 2.1 GHz fried itself. Overclocked the 1.8GHz AMD Sempron64 to 2.502GHz. It craps all over my old one and for only $85).

The bottom line for buying any PC....... Go by budget. Choose a system price and buy the highest frequency you can within that (intel or AMD). Don't try and keep up with the rolls royces, because they will be honda-civics in 6 months time anyway.

From experience it is more economical and a better strategy to buy a new mid-rang PC every 1-2 years than to buy top of the range every 2-3 years.

    My thoughts anyway. :o:D:D:D

  16. Electrons are colour blind.

They don't care what colour the cables are. First priority is safety. 3 core is a must (and correct size!) if you can get the international colours...so much the better (at least other farang will know what is what) if you can't - use whats available. If your a purist then you can always tag the cables for future tennents or in case you forget.

  17. A GFCI for the shower heater, bathroom lighting etc is worth the B2500 or so. Any idiot with a screwdriver can install it. ...and don't forget to ground both the pump and the heater...

GFCI = Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter

  18. For globe-trotting Thaksin, it's still business as usual - The Nation -

The brief chat with Blair in London, if it really took place as claimed, may have been intended as a curtain-raiser for more meaningful events when Thaksin was in France. There is the important but unfinished business of Thailand buying a new fleet of Airbus aircraft for Thai Airways International, the national carrier.

No doubt so that Toxin knows wheter to buy shares in Thai airways with his ill gotten gains (or maybe he will buy them and sell them to thai airways for a nominal fee :o ).

Can we add insider trading to the list?

  19. I agree with most of what Lopburi3 says except the mat.

Inside the shower the mat is likely to get very wet (and they say there is often an inch of water). This will give no protection whatsoever. But it will mean you won't slip when you get a shock :o
