FYI.. I just paid 1900 Baht for a border run today.... 1600 for my 'visa' into Cambodia... tried everything I could think of, short of being arrested, but no way around paying that much and in Baht... then the immigration officer in Cambodia would not let me leave the country unless I paid him 300 more Baht... very bad experience... it seemed to be happening to many people....

Thanks for your quick reply! Just to be clear, you are saying that I can apply for a non-immigrant o visa, based upon retirement, from a 30 day visa exempt extension. From there, I have to be outside of 15 days to apply for the non-immigrant o visa...
You mentioned that they are asking for proof of retirement for the non-immigrant o visa... do you know exactly what this 'proof' is?? Thanks for your help!! Ceiba

Hi, Does anyone know whether it is possible to convert an extended 30 day stay into a non immigrant o visa - I meet the age requirement for the visa and plan on converting the o visa into a retirement visa... Otherwise, any info. on whether it is possible to get a non immigrant o visa in Vientiane? Thanks!

Thank you for your quick reply! My 30 day visa is expiring on the 26th, so I may qualify... do you happen to know what the procedure is: 1. get affidavit of funds at U.S. embassy 2. Go to immigration and apply for non immigrant o visa...
I'm probably missing some steps, but this is all I know so far.... gulp Thanks so much for you help!! I'm a 'just off the boat' farang, lol!!

Well, that's where the 'extortion' part comes in, as it was not possible to pay in any other currency... I argued and pushed, until I became worried that I was going to cause bigger problems for myself (solo female traveler, so I must take a bit more care)... but the whole crew is on the take....
