To a Thai bank or U.S. bank?
Did they require the statements or did you present them without being asked?
And how much is the letter fee?

I already did. It goes back down to 1 million in 2020. So why would anyone deposit 25 million now only to have to send it all back? So, the bottom line is why would they change it and really you would rather keep your money in a Thai bank than a US bank? I have to assume you are Thai then which is fine.
I have an automatic monthly transfer set up with a Thai bank here for my rent. Just today the landlord sent me an sms where is last month's rent? I was traveling. I was not aware. What happened? Who knows. I had to redo it. I have had many problems with airlines not accepting the Bangkok Bank Credit card as well. Just saying.

Right, so just my theory they want the money and contrary to what another poster said about the Thai economy not losing out I totally disagree. I have bought a car, two motor bikes and thousands of dollars in furniture as well as spent thousands fixing up the house I rent. They are gonna be impacted big time if all this continues plus all the massage parlors will go out of business as well which means the police will be pissed as well as the military which protects all that.

The DPA has threatened to reduce the amounts of coverage for the past ten years, at the last moment they always leave the amounts as is. But hey, I'm sorry to interrupt your Thai bashing with some facts, that was rude, please continue.
If stating facts is "Thai bashing" my sincere apologies. You might wanna read some of the real Thai bashing posts here. The website you gave me states the "facts" which you conveniently left out.

However I do recall financial institutions Going down in the USA sub prime crisis
Also had brits transfered their cash to thai baht in a thai bank they would be laughing now.
Your theory is flawedWhat theory are you referring to? All I stated was that the US banks insure for up to 500K and that no one has ever lost a penny from a closed down US regardless of how much was deposited there. I would imagine the US government would be the safest place to invest in as many countries do.

haha. And it appears to go back down to one million in 2020. Why would that be? Plus, I could not read what the fine print might say.

Old dinasoures throwing around that same old chestnut until they actually believe it.Yeah, well if they are so safe why is it the max any acct is insured for loss is 1 million baht? In the US it is 500K and even then no one has ever lost a penny in the US for a bank closure. And can you imagine what you would have to go thru to collect? Probably have to hire a Thai attorney for 2 million to start with and then they gonna tell you that if you didn't deposit the money you wouldn't have lost it. lol Kinda like a road accident where the drunk Thai driver hits you and of course it is your fault for being on the bike in the first place. lol

Yes, of course. I know many. Prior to this month all you needed was the letter from the Consulate. Immigration never asked for verification of income.
And as someone else stated and as I did in a post a week or so ago most Americans at most get about 45000 baht a month from social security. That leaves you 20K short.
There is the third option that you multiply what you make in SS times 12, take the total and deduct it from the 800k and deposit that 3 months prior to the expiration of your extension of stay and you are good.
Of course even if you deposit the 800k you can pull it out the next day. The whole thing is a joke here. Why you need 3 months prior? It's a farce.

The US Consulate still provides the letter BUT Immigration requires proof. So the letter means nothing in reality. Another epic scam. And it used to be you could simply show your Social Security being deposited in a US bank. Now, not so sure.
You could even have a million bucks cash in a US bank and be refused renewal. Even God cannot understand why he did what he did. lol
I suspect the Thais want the 800000 baht (27K US) in their banks cause they need the dough. I also suspect they must get a cut from the Consulate for the 1500 baht fee (I heard now it is 2000 baht but not confirmed).

I just spent 7 hours at one of the driver's license facilities to get my motorcycle driver's license. Got there at 8:30 an left at 3.
It took me about 5 minutes to answer 49 or the 50 questions correctly and I got a 47 out of 50 (no idea what I did wrong) on the driving test.
Before the motorcycles can get tested the cars get to do their test first. The first test is to parallel park. Of the 8 cars who tried to park 7 flunked. It was a flucking joke to watch.
I was told I also had to take in a two hour classroom movie. I came back from lunch and they took my photo and gave me my license. I didn't complain about not having to watch the stupid video. What is funny is you only get to watch the video after you pass the written test and the driving test. Too funny for words.
I was also told that Thais do not have to watch the video for a car license only foreigners. Perfectly understandable as Thais know how to drive of course.
Frankly, in my view they should save themselves time and just give everyone a driver's license because No one here knows how to drive and no one obeys ANY traffic laws. If I hadn't looked at a test online I would have thought it was okay to make a U-turn in an intersection (illegal) and turn right or left from the inside lane. Everybody does it on Huey Keaw turning on to the Super Hwy right in front of the useless police.
As far as the "corrupt" police getting fired as someone said you would need a brand new police force. On fourteen years here I've been stopped about 10 times and gifted all but one.
Ok, so done venting. Another day another joke of a time in the Land of Scams. You just can't make this sheet up.

This is what can happen when you pull a BS PR stunt like Unsworth did with the shoe taping photo and then criticize Musk saying what he did was a PR stunt.
In Unsworth's case it was a pure publicity stunt. ("Look at me world. I'm a hero because I'm taping my ten year old shoes up soos I can keep working here"). Quite a caver to be walking around in caves with useless shoes.
I'm starting to wonder if he staged the whole thing.
You have to be pretty stupid to be walking around caves and mountains with hiking boots falling apart. I hike in the mountains almost every day. Brain dead to do that.
It has taken a while but nice to see folks finally beginning to see the light about this guy. Better late than never.

Best to think twice before you throw the first punch (actually, Unsworth got off three punches). The guy who punches back may put you on your ass.

As a retired UK expat in Thailand it's unlikely that Mr U has sufficient funds to initiate a case against Mr M.
So the decision to proceed will be ENTIRELY dependent on the lawyers. If they think they can win a case on a no win - no fee basis, only then will Mr U need to agree to proceed. At that stage it may be worth playing a few lawyers off against others (even US vs. UK) to get the team most likely to win and with the highest net payout.
As an aside...
The headline of this thread is a little confusing and IMO, makes no sense... Did Mr U approach the lawyers, or did the lawyers approach Mr U..
ie. ...says he (was) approached by US, British...... add the "was" and they approached him.
or ... says he approached (by) US.... delete the "by" and it was he who approached them..
Perhaps deliberate confusion to generate more forum traffic...? (What, me cynical?)
Nah, just poor reporting as with the newspaper that claimed Unsworth played an "integral part in rescuing the kids from the cave". He did not. He is NOT a diver. He made a phone call like any concerned human being. Musk did a whole lot more than this guy did and had a whole lot to lose if they did use the sub and kids died. And for what? To be abused by a whole lot of couch potato no nothings.

Both Unsworth and Musk were in the wrong,
Quite amazing to me how the guy who picked the fight and threw the first punch is now the victim. And my mom would have washed my mouth out with soap after my dad gave me the belt for saying what Unsworth said. Lies did not go over well with my old man.

Sounds like Mr Unsworth's mom didn't educate her son very well in the manners book. Well, here we go. Now Unsworth gets to shoot and kill Musk because Musk verbally defended himself against Unsworth's verbal and abusive assault. Sounds about right.
I would say Unsworth is lucky he doesn't live in the USA. Yesterday in Florida a man got shot and killed after he pushed (assaulted) a man who had told his gf they were parked in a handicap zone. The guy was afraid for his life, took out a registered gun and using the FL "defend your ground" law shot the guy. No charges.
I suggest and have suggested Mr Unsworth brought this whole debacle upon himself for no reason whatsoever that makes any sense. He lied about it being a PR stunt (Musk was asked to help), he lied when he said the sub did not work (it does) and he suggested Musk assault himself with his sub.
Unsworth also posed for the taping his shoe photo that got worldwide recognition so he is a phony hypocrite. He took credit for helping to save the kids when he wasn't even a diver.
Musk as a globally recognized person should not have used the term, Pedo. He has apologized. Unsworth has not.
I hope Unsworth sues and Musk countersues. Should be fun.

did Mr. Unsworth slander Musk's little sub or his motives ?
Actually both. He attacked Musk saying he did it all for PR which if you have been paying any attention at all I have proven (see link or tweets) was 100% false. And second he said the sub was useless and had no chance to work which is incorrect since it does work but was not used. Then he told him to stick his sub up his ass.

So by reports and video from BKK, Mr. Unsworth has traveled back to UK presumably to determine his legal options. Stay tuned.
He couldn't do that with a phone call? Nah, he's just trying to get some mulla outta Musk. He probably went back for other reasons not known. Maybe an outstanding warrant for an unpaid traffic ticket or something. Who knows. lol

I would highly recommend all the bashers here might want to review all of Musk's tweets made back and forth. It appears someone originally sent him a tweet asking for his help. Keep scrolling down and read all the tweets and then I want any sane person here tell me he did it for PR.
I am sure the apologies will start flowing Musk's way.
Here is the link: https://twitter.com/elonmusk
There is a video showing the sub with an individual in it risking his life to show it works. Dozens of people working their asses off for PR?
I'd use a derogatory word to describe Unsworth but don't want to get kicked off here. Clearly he and the the bashers here are j.......

Why?
There is a diver who asks for help (understandable and very nice of Musk to help) but it says nothing about requirements needed or that the solution offered is any good in this special circumstances.
Beyond silly reply. Thai engineers were in contact with Musk engineers. Do your homework

I am surprised that we have not heard from any lawyers here. I would be quite interested to know the thinking from a lawyer not some num nut here where they think Mr Unsworth would have to file a lawsuit if he chose to. Twitter home office is in California. Then again does it matter where Musk was when he made the tweet? If he was 40k feet in the air what country is that?
Anyone have any "factual" commentary?

I took it as if you were speaking to me. And no one is forcing anyone here to respond or even be here. It has been mostly me against all the bashers here. I'll give it a rest when the personal attacks stop. Searching for holes in the mountain is not an instrumental part of the rescue as the writer stated. Sorry. And I am still waiting for proof from anyone that Musk did it as a PR stunt. If the Thai divers are upset with you all it must mean you all are uneducated fools for attacking Musk.

It's still a joke. You borrow the 800K, keep it in the bank for 3 months and then give it back to whomever. Wouldn't be surprised if some company starts up making loans. lol
