  1. And this is why I hate this forum. 3 pages of trolling already. No useful information. I too, like to OP, is looking for updated information about this. I heard a rumour there would be a statement from the government tomorrow. Hope we will all be smarter then.

For all you trolls: You are NOT funny. If that's your intention, try harder. My smiling muscles didn't flinch even once reading this garbage. Stop wasting your own and everybody's time. It can take eternities sifting through all the garbage on this forum, looking for something useful. If you're in Thailand, why don't you take a walk on the beach instead of warring on the keyboard? Judging by some of you peoples' post counts, I don't think you see the sun much....

  2. We're going to Koh Phangan by car and planning to take it with us on the ferry. It's a Honda City (FWD), so I'd like to know where on the island we'll be able to drive and where we wont. I read that in the last years, many roads have been concreted, so FWD's can get around, but still Bottle Beach, Than Sadet and Haad Thien are off limits. Any other places we'll get in trouble? Is the whole west side, from Haad Rin to Chaloklum OK for FWD?

  3. Thanks Oxx, you taught me something new today. Just read up on it. We're talking about defamation here, right? I found this on siam-legal:

There are two types of defamation in Thailand. Under Section 423 of the Thai Civil and Commercial Code, defamation is defined as a person who makes false statements and circulates it as fact. The false statements must injure the reputation, credit, earnings, or prosperity of another person. If the defamer is found liable, the defamer shall compensate the defamed for any damages arising from the false statements. Even if the defamer does not know that his statements are false, as long as he knows that it should be false, the defamer is liable for defamation. The court is not bound by the criminal code’s limits on punishment in a civil case.

Under Section 326 of the Thai Criminal Code, defamation is defined as whoever imputes anything about another person to a third person in a manner likely to impair the person’s reputation or place the person in contempt or hatred by others. When defamation is committed by publication or other media made visible by any means, the offender is liable for imprisonment for up to two years and a fine of up to 200,000 baht. If the person who is accused of defamation is able to prove that the statement is true, the person shall not be punished. But the truth is not a defense for private matters that is not a benefit to the public (Section 330).

So it seems in both cases that as long as the the statements made are truthful, they are not illegal.

Why do you say "Writing the factual truth is simply no defence."? Are they practicing this law different from the writing of the law?

Is a  "Thai" Paypal account -which is actually managed by Paypal Singapore- considered a Thai account by the Revenue Department or is it a foreign account?

Excellent question. I wish I had an answer for you, but it might be one of those cases where no answer exists, until a case makes presedence for it. Good luck in your search for the answer - In the mean time, I suggest you try to avoid receiving the payments to the Thai PayPal account. If the payments are related to a company you own, I guess you can get a PayPal account in the same place it's incorporated.

  5. The servers are in Amsterdam.

Agree, 30 Mbps should be plenty. Netflix streams at the highest definition at 5 Mbps. I'm using this now, and there's no problems.

he should use a provider that has servers on west coast USA or AUS , plenty of international bandwidth to play with

Absolutely! Can you recommend me one?

  6. I've got a MAG322W1 at home now for testing, from an IPTV provider with servers in Europe. The box comes with the subscription, but was free to try for two days. Didn't work great for me, supposedly because my internet connection is too slow. (I should have 200 Mbps down, but when speed testing I only get 30).

Might work for you though, if your internet connection is better than mine. I'll PM you the contact information to the IPTV provider if you want to try it out.

  7. Interested to know how you get Discovery Channel online, and how much it's costing you? (First hand experiences only please)

Yes, it's another IPTV thread. Yes, I've googled it. Looked at many of the crappy, CC-fishing sites. Yes, I've read the other posts on the forum. Very low signal-to-noise ratio. Yes I've heard of Netflix and Roku and Android Box etc etc. This is my attempt at cutting through the fog. Keep it simple, look only for the main channel that interests me first. Just about had it with sifting through all the BS looking for gold. Really close to just dishing out the 1600 baht for the TrueVision Gold package lol. Disclaimer end

  8. In the end I opened an account at Bangkok Bank. Was skeptical at first since they only offer Union Pay, but that card is accepted more places than I first thought! Fees are lower than with VISA and Mastercard, and Thailand seem to have struck a deal with UnionPay to roll out on a big scale. The silver lining is the integration with the Rabbit card, and the wireless payments. The latter isn't too common yet, but noticed today that Burger King accepts it.

Yes, occasionally you find shops that don't accept UnionPay. So what. Then I pay cash. ATM use is free with Bangkok Bang ATM's, and only 20 baht for other banks. I also carry a VISA card that I use internationally anyway, so for me UnionPay card works JUST FINE :-)

Also like the no hassle procedure of getting the account. Only needed to get a proof of address from my embassy, since I don't have permanent visa or a work permit. Besides that, no problem. Not like Kasikorn Bank who will force you to sign up for their life insurance before they give you an account.

What kind of incident would cost you 800,000 Euros in Thailand? Maybe getting a brain transplant...lol

Unless you're traveling and utilizing 'worldwide' coverage a lot, I can't imagine your bill ever hitting that amount. The worst case would be getting cancer and undergoing numerous chemo sessions, but even then, I can't see the bill hitting that number.

A brain transplant would definitely cost more than 800k. Maybe even a heart transplant? I don't know.

  10. Trying to decide on one of two insurance options. One has a maximum €800.000 (30.000.000 baht), the other one is double that. My gut feeling says €800.000 should be plenty in Thailand, but gut feelings are only gut feelings.

Any first hand experiences with very expensive hospitalizations in Thailand? How much did the bill amount to in a year?

Definitely not a hypochondriac. You don't know my medical history and my medical experience, and I won't share them here, but one thing I will say, which is based on my many years of experience in the medical world in general and with many Thai doctors (mostly in Bumrungrad) in particular, I don't trust doctors much, especially not Thai doctors. I think the biggest problem with Thai doctors is that most of them think that their medical training ended when they received their diploma. They don't stay up to date with latest researchers, studies and technologies, unless they are being "forced" to do so.
In my own personal experience here, when it comes to things that are even a bit more complex than the common diseases/conditions, most of them tend to be outdated, overly-conservative, misinformed and provide lots of misinformation to patients. I personally corrected them many times during consultations and personally had to push them to run more tests when they said nothing wrong and then those tests found the issues I had. Shocking, isn't it?

As for your question, I think I pretty much answered that in the post you quoted.

In any case, it's all quite off topic. I am not the discussion topic here.

I think you have just the right amount of regard for doctors in general. Yes, many doctors are shockingly arrogant. I've had similar cart-before-the-horse experiences to yours. It often doesn't take you more than an hour of self study on google to learn something about your condition that your doctor doesn't know....

OK, do you know what, if anything, you pay to receive remittances from abroad? And how much is the fees to withdraw from ATMs? Any fees to pay with the card at the shops?

  14. So much conflicting advice....

For myself, the certificate of residence shouldn't be a problem. That leaves the visa issue. I'm always here on a tourist visa.

Would love to hear from someone with FIRST HAND experience with registering a car while on a TV! If you've done this, please share your experience! Was there any thing special you had to do to get it done? Any special procedures? Special terminology you needed to know?

So far we've spoken to the Department of Land Transportation, who said no, I can't register the car while on TV. Then spoke to 3 car dealers. Two said I can't, but the third said I could, even after I asked him to confirm. Twice.

  15. So the Govt Savings Bank won the "Best Retail Bank of the Year" for the second year in a row: here

But what do you reckon is the best bank for us farangs? Which has the best online banking web interface? Lowest fees?
