You are correct. She was wearing a helmet. But, either it was unfastened, in the cavalier fashion alot of Thais employ, or it was such a cheap helmet, that with the impact the strap or the buckle broke immediately, therefore not being of much use to her. You can clearly see her head on the pavement. My point is that an education campaign that not only emphasizes the use of a helmet, but that focuses on using as good a helmet as you can afford would be helpful.

Her helmet was fastened, it is her handbag you see flying through the air in the video. She suffered no brain damage or head injuries due to the fact she was wearing a helmet, not the dearest but not the cheapest either .It is the opinion of the doctors that indeed the helmet did save her life. I also believe the fact she was totally relaxed and not expecting the impact saved her from any spinal injuries.Talking of education campaigns the Governor of Nong Bua has mooted the idea of using the video in some sort of helmet wearing campaign in that she survived such a violent impact. The driver involves in fact owns two cars but pleads "no money", fortunately for Praew, social and mainstream media are very supportive and she now has free access to the no 1 Lawyer in Udon. Update on her condition is that she is home and recovering, walking and eating but gets tired and must rest. She goes back to hospital next week for evaluation and to discuss when she maybe able to return to work . The driver was uninsured apart from the compulsory rego insurance  that pays a pittance and really only covers the medical expenses and as a practising nurse who did her training at Udon hospital, she got the best of medical treatment and care

Dinooz....... Please look on ThaiVisa.com recently for the post about    Money pours in for Brit and Thai wife and child down on their luck in Buriram  ........

https://mail.yahoo.com/d/folders/1/messages/ANaWxAoAAANgWoej3gi2eKUO-y8............ There are a number of us out here that would contribute money for her future...........

Thanks Sawadeeken, I have got the wife looking into it. The family are very shy in this regard but I may have talked them around. An update on Praews condition is that after a few minor setbacks she was discharged from hospital yesterday and is now under the care of the family, we are not sure at this stage when she will return to work, as per the norm the woman who hit her was uninsured so can see a lengthy legal battle ahead. Cheers Deano

I never heard any comments about my earlier reply... About starting a "Go Fund Me' account for the girl........... I still believe it would be a worthy cause and I would certainly contribute.........

Thanks SawadeeKen it is a very noble and generous idea mate , at the moment we have many hurdles to jump and I wouldn't have a clue how to start something like that up. Priority is Praew getting back to normal and legal proceedings underway. Thanks again.

That's good to hear. Would have been even better if she'd fastened it

It was fastened, it was her handbag you see flying thru the air after hitting the windscreen of the car, the helmet disintegrated after hitting the asphalt which is what they are designed to do to absorb the energy and lessen the impact forces on the brain.

  5. Some other good news, she had a visit from two high ranking police who apologised for the other copper's behaviour and said something will be done ( we all know not much) but at least an acknowledgement, visits by the Province Governor, Ministry of Health and Director of the hospital, so hopefully justice will be served. Her recovery is going much better than expected and thanks to all the well wishers I have told her everyone is behind her all the way (except the 'she was in the wrong lane' and 'she didn't do her helmet up' comments) Keep Ya posted.. Cheers Deano.

PS. as far as I am aware the woman hasn't been charged as reported, she has visited Praew twice now and seems genuinely remorseful and saddened.

I watched some American type football recently, there were helmets flying off players. I'm betting the players had those helmets fastened properly, just was a tremendous amount of force involved.

happy to see that.  but the video looked like even though she had a helmet on, it came off before she hit theI ground so I don't think she had it done up right

As a practising nurse I think she has witnessed enough head trauma to understand the benefits of doing the helmet strap up, as IAMHERE says it was a heavy impact and with the low quality of Thai helmets it is understandable that it came off, it saved her life and that is the main thing.

The girl got a second chance on life, she was reborn again. Hope she’ll do something very useful with her life.

The woman  driver should have her license suspended for life she was most likely texting someone: check her mobile and  it will come out. Brakes somehow failed what a garbage of an excuse

She was doing something very useful with her life BEFORE the accident.

Thank you for the update on your step-daughter and it is great to see her improving.

As much as I agree with this part of your post about no one comforting her at the scene.

"I understand the ramifications of moving an injured person but just to have another human sit beside you and assure you everything will be ok and help is on its way or even to lay a blanket or jacket on her and at least show some compassion."

This is something that is quite common, we call it the "shock syndrome" because you would be surprised at how many accidents that I attended where the people just stood around and did nothing in the way of comforting the injured and that was in Australia, they seem to be in a world of disbelief and they just cannot do anything.

Keep the chin up mate, she will be fine

Thanks mate, you have no idea how relieved myself and family are that Praew can continue her very productive life, very proud of her attitude, ambition and achievements and she would have been not only a loss to us, but a loss to Thai society.
