  1. Hi all,

I have tried to find the information on the Forum before beginning a new topic, but with no results. So I am going to post the question/request here. Where can I find a secondhand book store who would like some free books in English? We also have some Cds and DVDs as well. We are in Central Thailand would be happy to drop them off. Thanks in advance.

  2. Hi,

I have searched the forum in hopes that there might have been someone who has had experience with this. I am an English and ITF Taekwon-Do teacher in Central Thailand, but not Bangkok. We have a small but good little school that has grown steadily since I moved back from Australia. (I am a Thai national and Australian Citizen) We are in the process of applying for tourist Visa for a group of 15 students and parents to travel to Australia in April 2014 for 7 days.

We provided the group with a payment plan to try to help them with finances and to ensure that all is paid for before the trip. This was also to help with the visa application.... so we thought.

Staff at the Australian Embassy is now saying that they don't care that the trip is prepaid, they want to see parents bank statements of the children travelling. Problem we have now with the visa application is that a lot of these children's parents are rice farmers and they mainly deal in cash.

I have collected the money from the families and issued them a receipt for it and have informed the embassy that I can provide this to them. Their response is that they want bank statements..... period.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

  3. My husband just got his new passport and went to our closest immigration office to get the visa and multi-reentry permit transferred to his new passport. Visa based on marriage was no problems, but the officer was trying to tell us that he had to apply for a new re-entry permit as it is automatically cancelled when they transfer from old to new passport. Visa and RE permit are vaild till 12 July 2012 and I have checked in the new passport and it looks like they have transferred both. Our concern is we have to fly out of Thailand at the end of March and obviously don't want hassles when we return.

The officer said that if he didn't apply for another RE whether it be single or multi, then when he returns in early April his visa will be cancelled as he has no "current" RE. We are both confused as all stamps for visa and RE seems to be in the new passport.

    Would appreciate any assistance.
  4. With regards to the KR 22, has anyone experience the head boss wanting to keep the original translation and certification from the MFA? I have been able to obtain the KR22 from my local amphur office, but the head boss has said that he wants the original translation and certification for thier records. I was able to keep the original with me as I told him that immigration needs to see the orignal documents, but as I don't to get on his bad side I don't want to upset him. Never know when I will need his assistance in the future.

  5. Hi ,

Thanks for all the tips and advice , I am already getting out of the habit of talking broken english and halve Thai to her and have stopped sounding like a robot , hopefully this will also stop my friends from UK rolling around laughthing at my voice when they come over to visit .

I am still speaking a little slower than usual for her and trying to use shorter sentances but everything now is in English , her Thai TV time has been cut too hehe ( thank god ) and changed to watching English channels .

She is already starting to speak more clearly and again i am surprised at how well she actually can speak in English when she tries for a sustained period .

I think it was also just a case of breaking old bad habits that we had gotten into when talking to each other since being togethor .

So now the only problem left to solve is , how do i improve my Thai at the same time , I am halve way threw 30 lessons at a Thai school here in BKK and she is the only person i have to practice with 95% of the time .

Looks like my side of things will have to go on the back burner for while .

Once again thanks to everybody who took time to reply .

    Hi,

Just my thoughts and experiences for you. I teach adults English and 90% of my classes are conversations. All my students are female professionals (nurses, accountants, managers and governement officials) and like all women they like to chat. I find that when I find a topic that they are interested in, there is no stopping them.

The main hurdle I had was getting them to not be scared of making a mistake and understanding that the only way to improve is to make mistakes, get corrected and remembering the correction. I know that it also helps that I am a female teacher who speaks Thai (though not as fluent as I would like). I think what would help your wife is to have a female English speaking friend, if that is at all possible.

  6. Hi,

Hope someone can help me out. For some reason I cannot access my hard drive at all. My MACRON is both a card reader and a hard drive, but I haven't been able to access the hard drive since this morning. I have tried using a different usb cable, different computer, changing the battery and nothing has helped. It hasn't been dropped or exposed to water. I have attached a photo of the unit.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

  9. post-28720-1229566714_thumb.jpgHi,

I urgently need some help. I bought 3 plants a couple of weeks ago and now they are looking very ill. 2 of them I have repotted into a new terracotta pot. I have read some information about them on the internet - water enough so that they are not water-logged or dry out, a light feeding (I used that fish liquid you mix with water), new pots have good draining soil. They are outside and get good sun exposure. They are in the wind a little and it is cool at the moment so I am not sure if this has anything to do with it.

I really don't want them to die on me. I have attached photos of all three. Would greatly appreciate any help.

  10. My wife hires the workers and while working in the rice paddies, she works along side of them. My wife is 40 years old and I hate to see her come dragging home covered in mud but she says it's her duty to plant her own rice and if she isn't working with them, the job won't be done properly.

That's the way to go. When you employ people, you have to show them you know the job so they can't fool you. Once you've done that, things get much easier.

It's not easy to be a boss :o

I tend to agree, the boss can set the pace and the workers will follow.

I've got a lot of employees in Bkk, they're a constant headache but definitely not lazy. Unless my wife organizes things it's a complete mess.

We have a guy look after our land and he does an excellent job. He quotes a job by how many days it'll take and if he finishes early he'll find other things to do, even though we're not there and he is being paid for the job, not by the day. He had 10 rai with his wife, but she got the lot when they divorced. Now he has nothing except a good work ethic from being self employed for 25 yrs.

We pay him B250 a day, I think he's well worth it because of his excellent knowledge. Two months ago the Bkk Chinese-Thai down the road told me I was paying him too much and complained pushing wages up. The other day he told me he'd watched the guy work and I was getting my money's worth.

I think we're lucky to find him.

Smithson can we share the guy on a rotating basis? Your land one week our land the next? I would be more then happy to pay someone 250baht a day if they have the same attitude as this guy.

  11. makyai,

just a thought, but it might be easier/cheaper to paint a piece of sheet metal with chalkboard paint, then you could use it for both chalk and magnets? You could use a pretty thin gauge and just laminate it to the old surface with contact cement, add a couple of screws for insurance (this all assumes the old chalk board isn't actual slate of course!).

    hth

Thanks for the though beechstreet and I think that you might be right. It was wishful thinking on my part, but thanks for the idea.

  12. I am on a search for magnetic paint so that I can convert an old free standing blackboard to a magnetic one that the kids can use. We have magnetic alphabets that the kids play with on the fridge, but the free standing blackboard offers more room.

I know that this type of paint is available in Australia, but haven't been able to locate them here in Thailand. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  13. Start with good seeds. There is a disease called lethal yellowing that can damage a field. Select seed from a field with deep green fronds and nuts. Start them yourself by planting them halfway in some compost. After they have sprouted and have exposed roots transplant them to the desired location. If you can buy, Dwarf green malayan coconut palm sprouts, buy them. It's worth it.

You will see flowers in 2 to 3 years, with fruit in 6 to 9 months. dont prune the fronds too often, this will cause a thin trunk. Let them fall naturally if possible.

Bananas need alot of sun so keep this in mind when planting them also.

Plant a few at least 15 feet apart. This will allow enough space for a hammock :o

    good luck

    meandwi,

Do you know the Thai name for the dwarf green malayan coconut palm? I think these are the ones I see from time to time and would love to plant them at our place. Thanks for the help.

  14. If you do a search, you wil find MANY posts telling you what you have already discovered. I had both Loxinfo Shitstar and TOT Crapstar. Both were absolutely pathetic. I was finally told after about four years that what I had was the best they could do and if I didn't like it they would disconnect me. Disconnect is what I finally did. I am now using a cell phone with AIS EDGE. It certainly is not perfect BUT it is MUCH better than the shit service I had besides being a lot cheaper.

Hi Gary are you able to provide more information as it seems that we are experiencing the same thing. We signed up for the Corporate package of 3,300baht per month and the best download speed we got today was 100kbps.

The local technician knows me well and I am taking notes of what speed we have everyday and will challenge them on it when the bill comes.

  15. Hi All,

Helping out a friend who will be setting up an Asian resturant in France. The restaurant will seat approx 100 people and they want to source everything from Thailand. - Tables, chairs, decorations, Cuttlery , Plates, cooking equiptment e.t.c. I know that JJ Markets is a good source for all these things, but are there any other alternatives in BKK. Also if there are websites this would be greatly appreciated.

If this topic has been discussed elsewhere could you please provide link.

    Thanks in Advance.

  16. Ok I know that this is an old topic, but thought that there are those who might appreciate this. Using pumice stone to remove hard water stains works and the best thing is that there are heaps of these pumice stones out there in Thailand! I just didn't know where to look. I bought one from a street vendor selling herbs and stuff for massages for 10 baht to give it a try and it works. As mentioned in other posts the stone wears away as you use it and the water stains are cleaned within seconds. Now that I know this works I will be stocking up on them. If it will help I can take a photo of it and post it on the forum.
