As a rule of thumb, anything taken from 'The Nation' is a twisted, misinterpreted version of the truth. Propaganda at it's worst.

Should have saved that one for the 1st of April ... nobody would have suspected the story's authenticity!!!

I am looking for an experienced OSCommerce developer. Knowledge of PHP and MySQL obviously a must. Some design skills will also be required so knowing your way around Photoshop or similar will also be advantageous. Funding is pretty minimal for this project, but if you perform well on this there will be more work to come.
Thai or expat is fine, although if you are Thai your English needs to be pretty good because all specs will be in English.
Examples of previous work would be useful.
You can e mail me: malcolmswaine [at] gmail [dot] com <- (hope this ok moderators - let me know if not)

Thailand is a wonderful place that I dearly love, but like anywhere there are always pitfalls.
Here are a few things that have really made my life in Thailand a lot easier.
1) Learn to speak (and read and write) Thai. You will never understand Thai people and the culture until you can communicate effectively. You will be ripped off time and time again because your ability to negotiate is fundamentally flawed because - you won't possess the information to make an educated decision.
2) Absolutely never ever rely on other, often well-meaning but dim-witted people to 'help you out' with financial matters, signing contracts, business matters etc. DO IT YOURSELF. It may be a bit of a learning curve, but the knowledge gained will pay for itself in the future.
3) Guys, if you have a girlfriend that you found in some bar, as sexy as she is, just because she speaks Thai, understand clearly that she is thicker than two short planks. You are better off doing your wild hand waving gestures and 'me think that not good' style pigeon English to sort things out than relying on her primary school education and yabba inflicted brain to help you out.
4) Never buy anything you aren't prepared to lose.
5) Go Thai Boxing. You will make lots of genuine friends who don't just like you for a leg up the social ladder. Thai bloke friends are essential to longevity in Thailand, but unless they are after a bit of uphill gardening can often be difficult to meet.
6) Understand that the good things in Thailand are often a product of some of the maybe slightly undesirable things e.g. having the freedom to ride around with no helmet is a product of poor road safety.
7) I could write all day..!

I've just flow with kingfisher. The flight from London to Delhi was super, first class. The flight from Delhi to Bangkok was slightly rough around the edges, but the cabin crew made up for the lack of luster. As to value for money - they're the top of my list. 420 Sterling return HTR -> BKK - and they allowed me to change the date of my return flight with no extra charge - impressed.

Money will most likely point you in the right direction ... or at least the promise of money. If I was in your situation I would start to make 'large reward' noises even if you don't have the money to back it up. See what happens. See who responds. Don't publicly announce it, but throw it out there slowly to anyone you suspect, one at a time (starting from the person closest to you) and see what comes back. Give it a couple of weeks per person so that you can match the response. Watch out for those 'coincidences'. People will invariably start to give themselves away by taking more risk for a larger potential payoff.
I wish you the best of luck.

Great idea - Thai Visa as always very informative.

Topic aside, that's one bad-ass ER diagram in the headline picture

All the beaches in Thailand belong to His Majesty The King. I'd kick the guys stupid ar*e if he was unfortunate enough to try that on me
-
These guys do water sports, including kite surfing.

Regarding car hire. If you're just after a no frills jeep to get you about the island and maybe off the road a little, then check out the polish guy next to the police station on top of one of the hills between chaweng and lamai (sorry, i know thats not very specific!). He's a decent guy, and his prices are pretty good. If you're after a nice new shiny 4x4 with all the trimming have a look at "samui new car rent". They are located about 30 meters from the Bangkok Hospital in chaweng on the opposite side of the road.
Hope that helps

I have the same problem, cooks trying to give me farang style food urggghh! Or even worse, they put the chili's in, but won't crush them as an apparent act of sympathy, so one moment you're eating the blandest curry ever, and the next moment you're hit with a whole chili! Nice!
Anyway, here are a few phrases which let them know I mean business
เอาเผ็ดมากๆจริงๆครับ
ow-pet-mark-mark-jing-jing-kap
i want super spicy and i'm not joking
เอาเผ็ดคนไทยครับ มิใช่เผ็ดฝรั่งน่ะ
ow-pet-kon-thai-kap mee-chai-pet-farang-na
i want spicy for thai people, not westerners gottit?
เอาเผ็ดจะตายแน่ๆ ไอมิใช่พูดเล่นน่ะ
ow-pet-ja-die-ner-ner i-mee-chi-put-let-na
i want to die from the spiciness, not joking yeh?!!
and of course my all time favorite that will be accepted as an instant challenge by the cook to try and "make the stupid farang puke"
เผ็ดสลบไสล
pet-salop-salay
is a play on words of the dop-salop-salay which literally translated means "to hit"-"unconscious"-"shattered", so in the same sense, "spicy""-"unconscious"-"shattered". Will get you a smile from using it anyway!
Bring on the sumtam!!!

1. I read online, that I need to go to Donsak Pier for the ferry to Nahtorn Pier on Samui. I am not sure, if I need to go to Surat Thani town to get a bus ticket to Donsak or I can get it at the airport?
Not 100% on this, as this is a bit of an odd route. Anyway, there are a lot of the busses from Surat Thani train station (outside in the car parking area) that go regularly to Samui. I would probably approach it this way. A ticket from BKK inclusive of ferry is about 700-800 baht, so this is a good measure of estimate for any other fares.
Ask at the airport. Thailand is amazingly good at transport. Ask for a ticket for Samui. You may only get a bus ride to Donsak ferry pier in which case you will need to buy your own ferry tickets on arrival - think its about 150 baht? cant remember :S If the fare is too much, get a songtaw to surat thani train station and get a bus from there. There are tour operators opposite the train station next to the cafes.
2. If I am on Nathorn Pier, what the cheapest way to Chaweng Beach?
Get a Songtaw. They all (should do anyway) display fare charts, which are per person. Nathon to Chaweng is about 80 baht i think ... If you just want to get there, get a Taxi, but expect to pay 300-500 baht even after haggling.
3. If everything works well on my way to Samui, will it work the same going back to Surat Thani Airport?
Nothing is for sure in Amazing Thailand, but that's all part of the charm As i pointed out before, travel is something Thailand does very well, so I wouldn't worry.

Hey, sorry Roo ...
Seriously, I am only joking. This is all meant in the best of humor, and no offense intended to anyone. I hope everyone has a sense of humor
... I've got nothing better to do today than wind people up ha ha!!!

You seem to think theres only two types of people in this world, 1. Stamp Collectors & 2. Grubby druggies. You miss the point. That's tantamount to saying anyone who drinks the occasional glass of wine is a Grubby Alcoholic.
-
<deleted> are you on about, do you think all young people are STUPID enough to be running around taking illegal drugs.
Those of us who haven't been left behind by social evolution and don't spend Saturday nights reminiscing about their stamp collections will probably have fallen into your "STUPID" category at least once in their lives. What do you think people are doing when they're going to the Full Moon Party. Wake up

Poor guy. Can't really say too much, but "negotiation" is the best thing. Get somebody to help you who knows how things work over there.
As for you guys who say is serves him right, don't you remember when you were young?

Buying electronics at Tesco has always been a bit of a lottery I've found. It's true that sometimes you can get decent stuff at bargain prices, but the after sales support you get is just appalling. If it goes wrong, and you have to take it back, expect appalling service and staff who know nothing and don't give a sh*t. If your item is under warranty, expect AT LEAST 3 months for a repair turnaround.
In my opinion, if its something you can live without, like a juicer or the new wonder-blow 2009 to make your gf's hair more bouncy, then by all means go ahead and buy one. I wouldn't advise buying a life support machine from them though.
-
Just say it's stuff for your house. As far as I know you only have to pay tax if the items are for business use (maybe someone can confirm this).
Good luck.

I didn't win the lottery again this month. Think I'm gonna blame Thaksin as well.

I dont know where you are BearHunt, but Starbucks can be a good spot. Their Wifi is a little extortionate, but you do get free electric and the staff in Starbucks are usually pretty cool and helpful to foreigners (the one's i've been in anyway).
-
What were the malware objects it detected Keestha?
-
Ha ha, that's just too funny! At least they were using AV software though.

It's a shame that Thai Visa news does little more than recycle and glorify this kind of crap from 'The Nation'. This is a great hub for expats, but they do very little apart from riling the readers and filling them full of loathing and contempt for their host environment.
