  2. Hi all

can anyone help with my problem. I am a British Citizen living in Thailand with my Thai wife. She has indefinite leave to remain visa for the UK but this will expire on the out of Country over 2 years on the 27th August 2020. We booked a flight with BA for the 14th July 2020 but this has been cancelled by BA. I have re-booked for the 24th August but with the Thai government stating that international travel will not start until September then I think this flight will also be cancelled due to Covid 19 restrictions and then her visa will have expired. I have emailed the Covid 19 site the UK (cih@homriff ice.co.uk) but can only get an automated reply stating the have received my enquiry and this is now 6 weeks since contacting them. Can anyone please help and advise. Thanking you all in advance

  3. The simple way is to get an International driving permit, around 500 baht. I have just returned from the UK and used the above permit. I have a UK license but the problem with using it is that if you are involved in an accident the insurance company may not pay out because your UK license would be void. Same thing applies if you renew your license by using a friend or family address as the license would be illegal under UK law. Rental companies like to see a foreign license with name and address in English which the Thai license does not have. The International driving permit is tied to your passport so they can find you if there are any problems such as claims etc.

  4. If worried then get an international driving permit in Thailand. I have just hired a car at Heathrow and Enterprise accepted the permit. I have not used my UK license as it does not have the correct address on it and may cause problems with your insurance company should you need to claim. Go to transport office in your local town and obtain a international driving permit. Cost approx 500 Baht.

  5. Hi Socky.

You have to live in the UK for over 180 days to be classed as a UK resident. So if you only stay for a couple of months that would not meet the criteria even if you are on the electoral role and registered with a Doctor and pay UK taxes. Regarding the UK license, as I see it if you give a false address then the hire company may let you rent a car but should you need to claim they will look very closely at all information provided so that they can push the costs back on the client and having an invalid address would help them do this.

  6. You can update your license on line but they ask how long you have lived at the address you have given and if it not your own address (maybe Brother friend etc) they may not update your license. Also they ask for National insurance number so they can check with the tax office and the Department of Works pensions and the electoral role,  if these do not have the address you have requested on your license then they will not issue a change. Worse than that it states that if you give false information you are liable for up to a £1000 fine.

  7. I have now found a company that does not insist on being a resident of the UK. And does not tell me they can not insure me when I put Thailand in as my Country of residence. It is a little bit more expensive than icarhireinsurance but is cheaper than the hire company. £77 for 14 days and £95 for annual coverage but this covers for £50,000. I have yet to buy and put my Thai address in but on the form it has already put Thailand as my Country of residence so hopefully will work. Icarhireinsurance (see message above) has said to try again as they are trying to include other Countries and I have time yet to decide, also I will wait for a reply from Simoh as he has asked icarhireinsurance to clarify. Thank you all for your help and advice.

  8. Hi All

I have searched through many companies now for excess insurance but all ask for a UK address. When I put Thailand in as Country of residence some of the companies state that they can not insure me, others insist on a UK address and phone number. I could provide both if I use my Sisters address but would this invalidate the insurance if I needed to claim if found out? Has anyone found a company that will insure non UK residents. I know Simoh 1490 is trying.

  9. How do you manage to get around proof of address on you license. My address is now 6 years old and as far as I know I can not change the address as they ask where you are living and how long you have been there. They also ask for NI number so they can check with the tax office and the DWP. Both of these have my Thai address

Not so, you MUST NOT be UK resident in fact. Perhaps you didn't change the country of residence at the start of the quote? TO ADD: Questor does not provide coverage for people living in Thailand, iCarhireinsurance does.

I think you could be right. I will take another look and change the country of residence. Do you have a comment on my Thai license having my old passport number. Do you think I should get my new passport number on the license. I agree with your comments regarding using an English license with the wrong address. It could invalidate the insurance if a claim was needed. Thank you again you have been very informative and to the point.

  11. Hi Simon 1490

Thank you for that. Will look them up. One more question. I have had to renew my passport so the number on my Thai license does not match up. Will I need to get my new passport number on the driving license or can Injust take my old passport as well as the new one for verification
