i will be on the road for the next 3 months next month i go south.

wich route do you drIve to Nan ?

have a plesant trip and be safe

    Cheers Nuwatmat,

We're heading up from Bangkok via Pitsanulok and Den Chai- the most please route once we've escaped the big smoke IMO :)

    Google Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source....907959&z=7

Google Maps says this will take 9 hours and 45 minutes but I did it a few weeks ago in 7 and a half hours. We were just there at the beginning of the month and I posted a trip report here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Ssr-Ride-Ban...50&start=50

Not sure how much New Year traffic there will be leaving Bangkok tomorrow morning- keeping my fingers crossed for a clean getaway!

We'll be hooking up with some GT Rider friends in Nan and looking very forward to exploring some new roads- Nan remains one of my very favorite provinces for biking.

Here's one loop I plan to do:

    PhuFaMapZm.jpg

Wouldn't mind doing this loop again, perhaps in reverse this time-

Thanks for the reminder about warm clothes- amazing how chilly it can get after dark and in the mornings as well.

    Happy Trails!

    Tony

You are going to have a swell trip.

did allmost the same route in january, but included loei, phu ruea, you are right nan is beautifull for driving but i remember loei was down to 8 celsius in the morning and had to wait til about lunch time before i started one day.

was up there during loi khratong it was about 20 in the evening but not one drop of rain for the whole trip, about 4 weeks nakhon sawan-mae sot-mae sariam-mae hong son-chiang mai-loei-nong bua-udon-khon kaen-roiet-buriram-bkk

I will be in bkk for a day or two from the 10 january maybe we should have a beer or two before i head south, was in phuket last week even that was a bit chilly in the evening.

    wish you a safe trip

  2. Good for you Nuwatmat,

Sounds like you've done your research and understand and are willing to accept the risks and I wish you the very bet of luck with this new business.

There is definitely demand, just no one brave enough until now to supply rental bikes in Bangkok.

Hope to catch up with you on the road some day.

Headed up to Nan tomorrow and riding through the New Year! :)

    Happy Trails One and All!

  3. The idea of a tourist flying in and jumping on a big bike riding around Bkk is pretty scary.

Yes, but for someone like me who is no longer permanently based in BKK and who used to ride a LOT in BKK, it would actually be awesome to have a rental shop there. I have been looking for quite a while to find rentals, but to no avail :)

Look no more, from the 10 next month there will be 2 ninjas or 2 er6n in bkk for rent,i am sure we will agree on a price we both can live with i have as for today 5 bikes all brand new 2010 with abs.

you can pick one up in central sukhumwit and return the same place the phone will be answered by mrs malee and by me.

i have found the kawa abs system quite good not as good as on the high powered bmw`s but good enough, been driving for 25 years and evry little bit of safety you can buy is worth the money, for us normal drivers not for the race track.

    keep in touch

Yes I realize That I gave prices on the north and the south of the country, I assume Pattaya isnt much different but cant say for sure as I have never rented there. I was just relating prices in Thailand all over.

Specific location beach Rd Patong.. Theres actually one I used for an FZ6 @ 1000 per day on single days and I know that would have haggled down to a couple hundred less per day if week or so. A CBR1000 was 1000 a day first price offered, that place was back from Beach Rd on the Rd to Karon. Prices vary enourmously depending on how much of a tourist they assume you might be.

I never give a passport but will leave a UK DL.. They usually need some working on for that but once they realize your a resident you can often swing it.

Are you alowed to go anywhere with the bikes and not only from bar to bar ?

The fz6 is a 450-550k bth motorcycle asuming its new and fully registered,i will check that out next month when in phuket, the cbr1000 must be an old one and not so interesting and if it has legal papers i would be very surprized,i dont mind paying for quality and i never take on a 1000 km trip with a dodgy soi bike.

I did meet a guy from france on a stolen bmw r1150gs last year he had payed 140k bath for it with fake numberplates on,the plates did look good but wiil get you a lot of trouble if you get cought.

A friend of mine got busted on a rented pattaya bike last year at nana, the cops siezed the bike and the renter had to come up to bkk and bail the bike out,lot of problems.

ALL BIKES WITH RECYCLED GREEN BOOKS ARE ILLEGAL,ALL BIKES WITH NO GREEN BOOK ARE ILLEGAL

I was about to rent a ktm duke 690 in pattaya a while ago i checked the book and woldn`t you know it was a kawasaki and not posisible to leave pattaya,if you rent an illegal bike and get it confiscated by the police the renter will probably blame you and you will have to pay for the bike.

A fully street legal and insured new cbr1000 will probably cost you about 7-800k bath asuming you can get it thru the emission test, renting it out for 1k bth is not good business i would say impossible.

You will pay thru your nose for spare parts and proper maintanance that counts for an fz as well

I do rent bikes when i dont bring my own and when i fly down to phuket or cm but i stick to the legal bikes with insurance POP is very good option i CM never seen dodgy bikes or cars at his shops and you can go wherevever you want with the bikes i have seen his bikes in LOEI.

I have never had any problems surender my passport or housebook i will get it back, allso hace no problem paying a deposit if required i always get that back when returning the bike

I have however never rented bikes on phuket because of the fact i dont like patong and it is probably the only place to rent on phuket, the other thing is that it scares me to drive down there, not so much the thai drivers but the tourists are the worst.

The worst place i ever driven was on samui last week, you can never drive safe above 60 kmh, rent big bikes there is totaly idiotic and i will not do it again, leave that to the holliday bikers i dont drive big bikes to impress bar girls

I will allso rent out bikes long term for a much lover price than estimated for daily rental, but it always be a deposit and some form of security and if you are 18 you will not be able to rent from me.

I got a lot of questions about renting bikes for short periodes of time like 5 or 6 days and a trip to laos i dont think people understand how big this country is and how afordable it is to rent a motorcycle,i have done laos with a klx and it is good fun i have been in evry city in thailand on a motorcycle and i am stil not bored with thailand the biggest mistake tourists do is to try to do it all in a week, this year i have done allmost 20k km in thailand alone, and i love it.

Next week i will go south to phuket on one of the er6 bikes il spend 2 weeks doing that.

both the ninja and the er6n are very good bikes any person can drive them and even exprinced drivers will like them the ninja has a better level of comfort and better tyres but the n version has a meaner look and does not invite to high speed.

All of you that want to come along on a tip are wellcome to do so, on your own ride or rent one from me,its a beautifull country to drive in and more people should do it

As mentioned earlyer all kinds of critic, advice, coments and input are deeply apriciated from the forum.

  5. I did not want to be so negative; maybe I could have worded my post better.

However I have lived in Thailand about 15 years and it really is a lawless place (look at the shenanigans that happens at government level; Taksin, etc). I think you could not expect the law or police to protect you and your business and anything could happen. Generally the more foreigners invest here the more they loose. I think I learned a long time ago to not spend more than I could loose and just enjoy Thailand for what it is. Thats what I do now. Hence why I own old bikes and keep them going. Overall I think I am quite happy knowing I now have little to loose :) Lets just say I have had property taken away from me and the legal system did not protect me. So you have little rights here.

    mai chai

I am sorry to learn about the loss of your house, this is more like a hobby for me i dont expect to get rich,i dont see it as an investment,i am fully aware of pittfalls in muang thai i allso speak the language.

i have sveral friends loosing realestate so that is not something i dont want to spend money on, its too cheap to rent i allso clearly see the problems with renting out bikes, damage on the bikes has to be payed by the renter, police can not confiscate a fully legal registered bike with insurance however they can put the driver in jail, allthough that is not realy my problem.

I legaly own all my bikes and i do have some real good thaifriends that will help me out if i ever get in to trouble, that has not happend yet.

  6. And passport.. And about double the daily rate of most renters here..

I was not aware of the fact that you could hire a ninja or er6 in bkk for 850 a day, however i rented one last week for 3 days on samui 2009 er6 for 1500 a day passport and 5k deposit NO insurance and could not leave the 20 km long island, totaly waste of money as the trafic there is deadly i would say wors than driving on sukhumwit as there are less drunk drivers there.

feedback are deeply apriciated and if anybody will tell me where i can get that 850 deal no deposit and full insurance i will not bother driving one of my own bikes.

Phuket you can get a ER6 for that kind of money.. hel_l 1l super sports normally haggled down to 1000b. I think I read Pop in CM is 900 a day ??

And no idea where I read it or heard it but even think I heard someone mention 15k a month which did strike me as VERY cheap... I may be confusing something on that one tho.

I am a bit confused too.i thought phuket was in south thailand and not close to bankgkok and i thought cm was 700 km north of bkk,and i asume we are talking fully insured bikes here, give me the name of the rental shop i siriosly want to rent a bike there (not kidding) as i am in phuket quite often.

850 bth a day no deposit and not surender passport fully insured that is the worlds best rental deal

POP gave me a grat deal on a er6n 29000 month with insurance.not sure if it was first class

it is however cheaper to rent a D-tracker somthing like 7-900 a day, that is a totaly difrend bike

  8. we will be renting out ninjas and er6n bikes in bkk from next month, all have 1class insurance and are 100 % legaly registered,we will allso be doing touring with groups.

The bikes will be parked and rented out very central in bangkok, there will allso be possible to rent one way to phuket airport and possible at a later stage to koh samui.

dents and scratches must be payed by the customer, if "loosing the bike" the customer are reliable for 25 % if the bikes value.day rental 1700 bth.

    10k bth deposit and passport.

  9. Hi,

Just hapened to put a purchase order on a blue 650R in BKK Rama 9 last saturday. According to the dealer they sold 3 Ninja that day including mine. I guess the 2 other ones are for other members of this forums :)

I am not too familar with bikes/bike purchase in thailand and have a few questions regarding that matter:

1/ Based on your experience with Kawasaki dealers, do they pratice the 3% extra surcharge I see in see in some shops when you pay with Credit Card? basically, I just need to know if I am better off coming with some cash.

2/ From what I understand, after delivery, I ll still need to wait for a couple of days to get the license plate. Is it safe to drive without the plate i.e. can I still get the bike immediately insured? I have to go from BKK to Chang Mai on the 15th. Instead of flying, would be much more fun to ride the bike to get familar with it. This might be doable if the first lot of BBK 650R bike arrive on the 13th as i read in Tony's post.

3/ BTW, how long does it take to go from BKK to Chang Mai ?

4/ Any limitations when driving a new bike (i.e. staying at low rev for the first xxx km ??)

Thanks in advance for your infos.

there is no surcharge on cc at rama just bought 4 er6n for delivery end october,i could have picked them up in 2 weeks but did not want them before.

the green collor is nice, took two green and two black,2010 w abs

  11. As said earlier. The Uborat Dam has a couple of "Beach" areas with swimming for the kids, cheap food places stretching out into the water, banana rides, paddle boats.

There is an OK Water Park on the Khon Kaen Bi Pass going towards Udon. A little bit tatty but the kids love it.

cesar has something called a playboy for 1700 bth, worth checking out, pullman rachid is a must, stay there if you can, chanses are that your wife and the parents dosent fit in there, but what the hel_l put them at kosa hotel and stay at pullman yourself,2500 bth pr night with free dinner and breakfast worth evry satang.

  12. Couldn't believe my eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!..............................SHOCK, HORROR...............I saw with my own eyes the ''Cockney'' owner /. proprioter of the bar that sells the Cider; a guy named Mark; English, accompnied by his Dutch 'Moron' friend; beat up with 'baseball bats' an unsuspecting English customer...............Can't believe; seen with my own eyes!!!!!!!..........

I do not belive the beaten up customer was totaly inocent,i know mark and he is a reasonable guy, remember one thing ,there are some real strange people in that bar, people the bar owner need to handle on evryday basis.

Brits are sick when it comes to football but i do not think this was about the wrong football team winning or loosing,if you go in to a bar shit drunk day after day and harrassing customers and get warned witch he probably was you will hit the wall sooner or later,i personaly don`t think beating up a customer are the best solution, can you describe the customer ?

  13. I will be getting married in march and my fiancee wants to honeymoon for a few days in Chiang Mai, but I want to go to Phuket after that for some sun and water. She currently owns a 125cc Honda, but thats not suitable for long range touring. Is there a place in Thailand that I can rent a bigger bike, maybe 1000 or up thats good for touring? I want to try and avoid buying one because I would not want to keep it. The best bike for the job would be a Goldwing, Harley Ultra, or BMW R or K 1200 with bags and top box.

Also, does anyone have anything bad to say about long range touring? Dangerous? Any pitfalls?

The alternative would be renting a car or taking the bus or plane to Phuket, but to me thats not as much fun.

    hello fellow biker.

there is a lot of crap aswers here, however motorcykling in thailand is not without risks,i do not know when you are going on this trip personaly i would avoid songkhran.

about choise of bikes,i just came from a 8000 km ride in thailand and laos during two months i have visited all the citys in north east and north thailand, what i discovered was interesting.

    1) the need for equipment

i ride bmw motorbikes, big ones i have owned a lot of brands i would never atempt this trip on a harley or a big bmw the last bike was a k1200gt the best touring bike i ever had the pleasure of riding, but in trafick in the city it was to heavy in the front and to much power for thailand the k1200r from last year did allmost 300kmh on the highway in germany impossible in thailand not even on the best roads, you will start loosing grip in about 200.

never had a harley that was suitable for long rides, talking 500km a day.

the biggest highways are very good but a bit bumpy when speeding, you can not wear any kind of heavy duty protection gear except from a good helmet it is just too hot,on this trip we had about 7 kg of luggage the need for clothing is minimal, check in to the hotel and deliver for laundry,3 sets of underware 2 pair of jeans 3pair of shirts is all you need ,things you buy and want to bring home, just go to the post office and send them home, very cheap.

the first strech we used a kawa Dtracker 250cc in laos and part of isaan very reliable but not suitable for long strches about 200km is enough,i traded it in for a new kawa er6n it is not a fancy bike but it sure will do the job.

    2) safety

beware of the buffalo hours 1500-1700 lots of buffalos crossing the roads+the buffalo manager and a lot of shit in the road, personaly i dont like the dedicated lane for bikes, people make food there they talk in the phone and you get trafick comming towards you and you get less margin from tractors and cars comming from left.

as you are very light on safety clothes, drive slow use a good helmet with good ventilation, you will get a good one for about 600 dollars, but if you got a 100 dollar head dont worry.

look for the dark/shiny asphalt, that is oil comming up as the road heat up and sweating it is very slippy, make sure you have good tyres michelin pilot are good very soft and good grip.

try to get a pair of mesh shoes with good ventilation do not drive with flip flops.

do not ride with shorts use heavy duty jeans or mesh mc jeans,as for jacket i did not wear one,i brought a bmw riding suit witch i used in january but in feb it was too hot even it was a summer suit.

Do not even think of driving when you are drunk (drunk, not one singha ) the police has now started regular tests of drivers it costs about 5000 bth if you are drunk.

do not drive faster than 120 kmh,the roads are not suitable for mutch faster.

if you are not used to driving in thailand i would try to get a guide for a couple of days so you can get used to it,it is nothing like driving in patong beach or pattaya beach road where they are used to tourists, you will be driving to places where there are no tourists and no big bikes so they are not used to you.

on the road you might find yourself driving behind a pick up truck with a lot of people in it beware of beer bootles and other stuff flying from that truck.

    3) police

never had a problem with them, got stopped about 10 times they were very polite and never asked for tea money however i had to show my lisence evry time and papers for the bike, all legal so no problem, sometimes i stopped and asked the police for directions, very helpfull.

No mather what the guy tells you DO NOT DRIVE A GREY REGISTERED OR NON REG BIKE.

i still keep the er6n i thailand it is reday for me evry time i come back,i am planing to buy a couple more for renting out purpose, very reliable and very chep spares

happy driving wish i could join you

  14. I stayed a couple of days i brr,it has been a long time since last time,i met some real nice people there farangs and thais, seem to me that the farangs there mostly comes from pataya and try to make the last of theire money to last a bit longer i brr.

Nothing wrong with that, when it comes to food it is not the place to go and i do not understand how any of the farang places can compete with the thai places, the service in all of the farang places is as bad as on a aeroflot flight to moscow, the food is just as bad.

i had a very nice conversation with chris at friends, very nice guy did not badmouth anyone,he has had some bad luck with the restaurant but he was by far the most interesting person i met besides that he had decent food.

The biggest idiot i met had to be 70 something norwegian selfclaimed thailand guru that did not speak a word of thai,a raving alcoholic, guess evry city has one.

the vinyl place french owner,i had 2 meals there lets just say he was lucky with the singha.Bamboo bar,ate there twice food is best described as fastfood mc donnalds does it better and faster but this place is a safe one if you like wienerscnitzel, it is allmost impossible to fuc_k up a wienerschnitzel, the service level in this place is by far the best.

Mark is likable guy polite and honest and has a nice bar with diffrend kinds of beer.

there are no good hotels in brr, thepnakorn is not as bad as the other hotels there and the food is VERY good+they got a good swimming pool, the other entertainment there you can find out by yourself some of them are not suitable if you travel with your wife.

Sawan Daeng is a nice place to hang out allmost evry day extreemly professional staff, very good food very good band, this is a nice place to pick up girls both comercial ones and not com.

phutakorn not far from thepnakorn hotel is nice good band very high level of service good food, its like sawan daeng but smaller and you can smoke there allso a good place to get in touch with non pro girls but not after midnight when karaoke girls hits the place but it is not to hard to see the differend.

The woodshack whores or the bamboo bar whores are just too ugly for my taste either that or they are just too young there is a lot of underaged girls there just stay away from them.

Buriram is a nice city do not expect to meet rocketscinetists if you only mingle with farangs but there are some nice and friendly farangs there :D

    FRENDZ IS NOW CLOSED

As for your coment on the girls who work at the Bamboo i would not call them WHORES :o

Sorry neither would i but i did not refer to that bambbo bar i ment the small ones with karaoke,my faulth

Thaksin guilty in land case, gets 2-year imprisonment

    post-128-1224579223_thumb.jpg

Thaksin Shinawatra sentenced to two years in jail

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court Tuesday found former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra guilty in the Ratchada land case.

He was sentenced to 2 years in jail.

Pojaman Shinawatra, his wife, was found not guilty and the court revoked arrest warrant against her.

The court found that Thaksin had violated Article 100 and Article 102 of the National Counter Corruption Act, which states that government officials, including prime ministers, and their spouses are prohibited from entering into or having interests in contracts with state agencies under their supervision.

  17. :o

I was in department store in the morning late yesterday. A tall and big guy was rudely pushing his trolley in the supermarket, annoying some other customers. We have been at the cashier in the same time. He was throwing noisily big boxes of beer in his trolley, moaning against the small cashier who can’t carry easily the big packs of beer….

Ten minutes later, a car hooted me aggressively, wanting to use the wrong lane for passing a few cars at red light… The driver had his big red stupid face at the window… Yes, he was the same guy.

A farang in my estate has bought several houses for renting out and his customers are European people in holiday. Because they are in holiday, they imagine they are alone on earth and shout, drink all the night. They definitively ignore other people living there.

Of course, my farang doesn’t care. Money first.

For lunch, I was in the cafeteria of a dept store. A furious farang was howling against the waitress: "why are you working here if you can't speak English...?"

The guy had a terrific problem. He wanted ONLY half a glass of ice, and she had put a bit more.

I'm farang living in Thailand and often, I'm not proud of us.

Recently there was a thread somewhere on Thai Visa about "why do expats ignore other expats?"

I think this answers the question quite tidily.

  18. :o

I never use hotel safes! I carry a pair of boxer shorts that I was wearing on a previous occasion when I got a very bad case of the 'Bangkok Trots'. (I carry them in a sealed bag). Upon leaving my hotel room I slip my money and credit cards inside the boxers and leave everything in full view....

To date, no-one has stolen my money or cards.

But there does seem to be a problem when er.. ladies of the night return to my room with me. I have to provide a clothes peg for her nose:)

  19. Trent you cheating bastard! Riding without your wingman is bad for the Karma! :wai::D:o (But no worries- we'll be thinking of you when we do our Laos trip in February) :D

Man- I should be excited for my 5 week holiday in Europe, but honestly I'd rather just stay in the LOS and RIDE! :D

Ah well, the tickets are already paid for and my friends and relatives are expecting me, and I'm going to pick up a couple of Italian Airoh helmets while I'm in the old country too. (Going to order a Large and an XL because even after trying them on at FastCorner I really can't decide which is my size). I'll sell the one that's not my size for CHEAP on ThaiVisa :D

Have a blast on your ride and don't forget to take some pics and share them with us! See you when we get back in late January.

    Happy Trails,

    Tony, Nong and Little Mir
