Please don't insert logic into the discussion. The former blue collar workers on Thaivisa with little economic knowledge know better. Its all a secret plot of the junta and HiSo to keep the baht up.

They forget the market rules the price of the currency, they also only see the negative news in Thailand but forget about the problems of Europe and Thailand.

Like everyone else id love to see a low THB as i get income in euros but that does not mean i forget what has been taught to me when i studied economics.

The doom and gloom mentality that the majority of members seem to have is damn annoying. Just want to read some positive news.. or some realistic and good mentality comments but it's hard to find.

  2. Why did Thailand cancel visa on arrival for countries like Mexico, Malta, Ethiopia, etc. which have very low cases? While Belgium is mentioned nowhere and has 689 cases. It's like they just randomly picked some extra countries on the map who barely visit Thailand anyway. Yeah cancel visa on entry for Bhutan to contain the virus or that one case in Bhutan will kill us all!

  3. In case the police wants you to sign documents in Thai, contact your embassy. You always have the right for a translation of the documents that the police ask you to sign. If you are going in front of a judge, make sure you dress appropriately and not like the usual tourist. Wear neat, clean clothes to court.  Think “business casual.” Take off your hat, take off your sunglasses, turn off your cellphone. Contradictory to the advice of some to apologize in front of the judge, many of the wrongdoers who apologize in court are probably motivated by a desire to improve their outcome rather than by true contrition. And thus many judges appear largely impervious to wrongdoers apologies. Ask your lawyer how to proceed.

Judges may not be swayed by an apology, and any apology made to a judge must be approached gingerly.

If you are going to speak in front of the judge:

Know how to address the judge in Thai. In the US you say "Your honor."

Your lawyer will know if it's a good idea to apologize and whether you should show expressions of remorse.

If the answer is yes, ask whether you should apologize in Thai.

    Lastly, be prepared.

Dude the essense of truth is that we are all going to die. Period. Lose 50 pounds and get struck by a meteor. Enforce the strictest DWI laws in the world and some drunk will regardless come along and kill a bunch of folks.

There is no extending your life. You will die when you are meant to die.

Acknowledging the element of truth in the philosophy is tough when you are blinded by your Western weltanshauung , but hey, on a purely philosophical basis, its right.

There are statistical likelihoods of life spans for groups with certain conditions or circumstances. If there is the ability to shorten your life, then there is the ability to extend your life. You can directly control the extend of your life expectancy. A meteor you cannot. Acknowledge the element of truth. If destiny is death, then you cannot change destiny. You can change the journey to your destiny. If destiny was that you'd be killed by a drunk driver, then destiny could be changed by taking simple preventive measures, like taking the car keys of my drunk friend who'd otherwise have killed you that day. Your inaction to act will cause those who weren't meant to die, to die.

One of the documents required to apply under this investment category is your work permit which means you are expected to be working in the company you have invested in. No big deal for most investors who are living in the Kingdom, as they most likely do have a position in the company and a WP. But that means there’s little advantage applying in this category . In fact it would probably be easier to apply under the regular business category, as they are sure to demand a crate load in of additional documentation from investment applicants.

Work permit is also required for the humanitarian category. You can save on the fees, if you have a Thai wife but in that case you can apply for citizenship and fees are cheaper still.

I have been through both processes and I can assure you there is no way for a male to apply for PR or citizenship without a WP and 3 years of tax receipts. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar or a fool.

    What does WP stand for?

Could you tell what medication?  I know some now have warnings about rapid weight gain but many do not!  What you are describing is called Set Point and is documented in a youtube video called, "The biology of weight loss."  It is an HBO special provided by the National Science Foundation and National Institute of Health.  Set Point had been denied by the medical community for years but the documentary really explains the science well and leaves the American Medical Association in the dust.

There is also an article linked somewhere on this board about the US television show "Biggest Losers."  Same thing!  Once the weight pours on lots of diet and exercise are of little help and quite damaging if taken to extreme.  It puts people on a spinning gerbil wheel.

The only advice is time and patience and persistence.

It was under the class of Benzodiazepines. I can't remember exactly which medication it was. I was sleeping so bad and had a severe case of RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome). One of the side effects of the medication is that i would have an increased appetite and that i should be careful. The doctor didn't warn me about the side effects. Got so pissed. From now on, i always ask if i should know anything about a medication. I also always read the paper inside the package just to make sure. And thanks will look it up!

An interesting factoid from the aforementioned Australian t.v. show. Research shows that people that have lost a lot of weight and managed to maintain that for six years (that's rare) still retain the same profile of ABORMALLY high biological hunger stimulating hormones that they had before the weight loss. Professor Proietto concludes that if the same condition exists after six years, it's for life. In other words, obesity is a CHRONIC lifetime condition even for those that have lost weight and managed to keep it off. This wouldn't be relevant for more normal people that want to lose ten pounds to look better on the beach.

I wonder if a skinny man that became fat due to medication, could develop into having abnormally high biological hunger stimulating hormones. I hope not. I came from 63kg to 78kg in a very short amount of time. I got a few marks similar to some women have that gave birth due to rapid expansion of the stomach. (I'm a guy). I have been skinny my entire life until last year. I stopped the medication a few months ago but this fat doesn't want to go away. All this fat stays around my stomach, like a beer belly. In the past i could eat anything i want. I could eat all the lovely sugary foods without gaining one pound without exercise. Even though i don't eat much now, i don't seem to lose weight.. I don't lose any pounds with cutting sugary foods in my diet. It only stays stable.. I really feel for fat people now. It's a huge struggle. Fat people know they're fat. At least me and it annoys the shit out of me every day.

Unlike the West my experience is if you ask them to change simple things like this they will do they want to make you happy.

    Especially from KK.

It was my first time in Thailand and one of my first experiences with Thai women. I just knew her for a few days and wasn't comfortable saying that to her. Shouldn't they already know that it's a turn off? Just like every man knows that not having shaved your balls is a turn off for most women in the west.

I just had a £300 run-in with Travel Genio  on the Jetcost website. I noticed my wifes name was spelt incorrectly-one letter- on the email confirming booking. I rang -crazy system -cut me off before I could get through after 6 mins. Tried the complaints letters -got my letter back -Travel Genio at the top  but no communication (Twice) eventually I got through and was told to phone the Airway (Jetair) Did so -told me I was booked through Etihad and I would have to talk to them -and in any case they (Jetair would not allow anyone on board without the totally correct spelling.Tried to get back to Travel Genio -eventually received an email saying airway would not let my wife fly. So I then tried to get in touch (another three days of on/off trying) finally got a webchat -who confirmed my wife couldn't fly .I asked how much to cancel-170euros -I then  asked why they did not tell me this in the first place -no reply-So I cancelled both tickets and booked with KLM.

They were totally disinterested and didn't even feel the need to inform me of any options I might have! Advise all to give Travel Genio a miss!

    Sorry to go on but...….

On the other hand, a friend of mine typed my name incorrectly while booking a flight with Thai Smile. Contacted the airline, they said it was no issue.

I have been living in Bkk for several years, well ... never seen so many obese girls or unshaven legs in a European university so I guess we just have different standards of beauty. Let's say that I am happy for you that you find Thai ladies attractive, on my side I just prefer to be very selective.

I was in Khon Kaen last year during Songkran and there was this girl that i hanged out with. She was beautiful but after seeing that she didn't shave her legs, i just couldn't..

On another note, on beauty, women in the west catch my eye way more often but they're just not approachable. There is always the initial hostility and you've gotta prove your worth her time. I just want to meet new people, not get into your pants or kidnap you.. If i approach 100 women, i might get one number. Thai girls are way more approachable and friendly. If you look average and take care of your hairy legs, then you got me..

Are you sure of the requirement to show a recent pay check for a Single Entry Tourist Visa?

Also please note: You can be asked to show proof of onward / return travel and proof of funds (20,000 baht - cash / currency equivalent)... there are reports on this forum of people being rejected for not having this. You may not be asked (like last year), or you may be asked and it could become a problem....

It is mentioned on the website of the Thai consulate of Belgium. I could show that i have 20.000 baht in my bank account by going through the bank application on my phone. If that's not valid, then i hope there is an exchange office near the border. I find it ridiculous tho. Maybe i should hire a beautiful rental car to pretend i've got lots of money. ????

You mention euro. Guessing you can obtain visa exempt 30 to Thailand. Keep in mind that this can be extended by 30 day. Since your in KK you could bounce to non khai border and obtain another visa exempt. You have many options

Indeed, i get visa exempt for 30 days. Any idea how this can be extended? And can it only get extended once?

I have read that Thailand limits visa exempt entries at land border to two per calendar year. Does that mean i can gain endless visa exempt entry's by air as long as i have a valid passport?

I think the issue you may have is that you could be asked for a return ticket upon entry to Thailand and if you cannot show one (+20,000 baht cash or currency equivalent) its possible you may be refused entry (unlikely for a first timer, but possible).

Options: Assuming you are from a country which permits you to enter on Visa Exemption Stamp on arrival and have no other previous stays / visas for Thailand.

Fly in to BKK...  Stay 30 days... Do a Visa Run Via Mukhdahan (you may still be expected to show proof of onward travel out of the Kingdom and 20k baht in cash)

The most reliable options: Obtain a Tourist Visa

Chose a ticket on which you can change the return date (or for a small fee).

OR, purchase a fully refundable return ticket and as soon as you arrive, refund the return ticket & buy your one way Ticket home when you require it.

For hotel bookings and proof - there are a number of websites which offer fully refundable bookings...  thus, you can book a hotel... apply for your Visa... then cancel the booking charge free (i.e. booking.com)

I bought a one way ticket to Thailand last year and wasn't refused entry.

The reliable options sounds worthwhile except there is still one problem, i need to show a recent paycheck.

    And thanks guys ????

  15. I want to go to Thailand but i'm not sure how long i would like to stay. I'm certain it's going to be more than 30 days. What would be the most viable method to stay for over 30 days without a visa, if i'm staying in or near Khon Kaen/Bangkok?

    1. The problem with Visa single entry is that i need to show a return ticket. I don't know how long i want to stay so i don't want to buy a return ticket just yet.

    2. Visa multiple entry requires at least €6000 to be on my bank account.

    3. For both i need to show a recent paycheck.

    5. For both i need to show in which hotel i'm staying but i would only know where to stay for the first 7 days.. i don't like to be stuck in a place if i don't know i'll like it.

I'm a student with now 3 months free time. I went to Thailand last year and loved it. I saved enough money but i can't show a recent paycheck or that i have €6000 in my bank account.

Good morning. You thought it over?

You should invest in Thailand simply because that's where you decided to live.

Things might not run perfect, but - did anything ever run perfect?

Stay away from the idea that you ever get perfect control over your environment. Just take what you find, and try to make the best out of it.

You could invest in your kids' education, your Thai lady's ability to stand on her own feet, a shoe facory (run by Thais), or whatsoever.

Remember this is Thailand, literally the land of the free, and Thais will certainly do what they want. Don't even try to impose Western values on them. Take a look at the West - things are not running perfectly in the West, are they?

You have obviously already made your decision. So, trust yourself, and commit to your decision.

Once you're over your cognitive dissonance, you can ask *where* to invest in Thailand - but that would be another question.

All these posters certainly gave me something to think about. I think i've got one advantage and that is that i got a Thai friend whom i dearly trust. We've already got few businesses together in the west so why not create another one in Thailand. Every post gave me the impression that everyone wants to screw you over in Thailand. You can trust no one and if you do trust someone, be ready to get screwed over. We're both quite annoyed by the corruption and the laws. Specially because we foremost try to be good men and having so much corruption makes everything toxic.

    My conclusion:

There are a lot of red flags here but that's what we expected from a developing country. What i like about developing countries is that there is always so many things to do, so many opportunities, so many things in which they can improve in and we can help.

Is it still possible to invest/create businesses? Certainly but be very cautious.

The focus of wealth is certainly in Bangkok metropolitan area but i would like to provide work opportunities for locals, professionalism, careers, insurances and more in less known area's so we can all grow in good ways.

What i need to know before i can continue:

Do i have to pay someone under the table in order to invest and create businesses?

    - Whom can i trust other than my friend and business partner?

    - Where are the good lawyers?

    - Thai laws: Inheritance Laws, foreign possession laws, etc.

    - What kind of contracts are there in order to legally secure my possessions?

    - etc.

Again, you have not acquired the knowledge to understand so I will make it simple for you. And what  could possibly be more relevant to investment than the government threatening to arbitrarily putting tens of thousands people out of businesses.

    - The Hotel Act requires hotels to submit before construction plans and permits.

    - After the fact it is impossible in 99% of the cases to get a hotel permit after the fact (a perfect storm for shake downs).

    - The 2016 amended law treats the Hilton the same as the one star Do Drip Inn along with everything in between.

    - Those charged and arrested are told the only way to stay open is to get a permit which is impossible to comply with in an existing building.

    - I can only assume the only reason there are only 300 legally licensed hotels in the country is because complying was so insane and expensive people paid to get their "Licenses" . Sound familiar

Are they really going through with it? Cause it doesn't make sense from an economic standpoint. It's just going to cause a lot of misery which will benefit no one.

What are these "generations" you mean - Thai or Farangs?

A Thai family in Thailand wouldn't be a problem - as Thais they would not be restricted to the 49 pct limit, and they would be your heirs. But if you want a secure nest for your Farang kids in Thailand - this would probably be considered an invasion.

I guess that if i marry a Thai and we have kids, the kids get Thai citizenship. The 49% limit doesn't matter if all goes well. The problem is what happens if we divorce or my kids are unworthy of receiving anything i've worked for. I do not know why but the word Farang always sounded to me as an insult. Is it just me or?

I had to laugh at your choice of words.

Competition isn't that bad if it comes with accumulation of resources. Thai soil is a scarce resource though, and you cannot own land without taking it away from somebody else. That's why I wouldn't invest in real estate in Thailand.

There are other fields open for investment though. Medicine and wellness e.g. You will need expertise for this, and you'll probably need a joint venture. But you might also become a consumer of medical services one day, and then you'll be glad to have them. Just a thought...

The only reason i would invest in real estate is because i want to grow and build into that place. To be connected to that place, to have a home for generations long and to have it secured against any claims.

Any businesses that i would create in a non-developed country is to provide work opportunities for locals, professionalism, careers, insurances and of course money so we can all grow in good ways.

If one does not understand why competing with the locals is 'dangerous'- I would suggest keeping your money in your pocket.  Thailand is rife with business conflicts amongst its own citizens.

A foreigner who comes into Thailand with a small business operation and competes with established Thai business and is successful and the Thai businesses' lose market share or even worse go broke will cause not only resentment against the foreign owner but also scrutiny from  unwanted elements. As a foreigner- don't ever get too big- unless you are big and got the money to back it up as well as the connections.

Oh  dear, you really don't know?   Don;t be taken in by the smiles.  You are a guest here and not a particularly welcome one.  Splashing western money around is a clear in invitation to get legged over by someone.

I certainly do understand and have had Thai people explain it to me. But doesn't that go for any country? If i have had a bike rental for more than a decade and then some <deleted> foreigner comes next to me with newer bikes and cheaper prices. Yes, i would certainly get pissed.

Now, in what way do Thai people react to competition? Are there any documented cases of foreigners being hurt in any shape or form with business related issues?  The Thai people to whom i've spoken to, told me not to mess with anyone if it creates any competition because the Thai businesses are usually involved with the "mafia".

But like i said before, any businesses that i would setup will probably not cause any competition and it's merely used to secure a future for myself in Thailand, the people working and the environment. I would have a hard time of thinking why anyone would want to shut me down unless it is for jealousy.

Now i often ask questions to whom i know the answers to cause maybe there might be something that i missed or maybe there is more about it than i thought.

Oh yeah, since i'll always own less than 50%, any businesses created in Thailand are mainly owned and operated by Thai people. So there is always going to be a fight between Thai people.
