I purchased two 27" Samsung S27H850 QHD Daisy Chain monitors last year at £750 (roughly 30k baht) so 25k baht for one monitor is certainly a step up in class.

this is why i prefer desktop over laptop
i doubt i could go back to a single screen no matter how big the screen is
i am so accustomed to using multiple screen for years now

this is my problem with laptops in general as a main machine
is to have a decent screen to use full time the laptop must be huge and is then a PITA to carry when travelling (fine for professionals when working)
or if the size is convenient for travel like my samsung Ativ Pro 700T the screen is too small for everyday use.
and TBH i have not even taken that anywhere past couple years as my phone will suffice

for the OP, my best value advice would be to buy an AIO focusing only on screen and CPU
then upgrade the HDD to SSD and add more RAM
buy an external enclosure for the HDD and use that for backup or additional portable storage
(or even buy a Pi4 as well and use the HDD for a NAS)
but i think OP would prefer to avoid such steps

its funny how some giving advice are only giving advice that is most suitable for themselves and not the OP????‍♂️

I guess it depends where we live. I go out and I described what I see.

Obviously you or anybody else might see a different situation depending on where you go out and observe the people.

i have been up and down the country past week
    seen the same everywhere
as others have mentioned once you move away from major city and away from 7-11
masks are akin to helmets, only being worn by most when required
even on darkside pattaya i see few with masks unless they are going to a shop that requires it for entry

It seems most people in Thailand wear masks most of the time - except when they drink and eat...

do you not go outside or anywhere else in Thailand ?
definitely NOT "most people" as you put it

all i see are some families programming their kids to wear muzzles
with the adults not wearing a mask or wearing it under their chin if they are
    apart from that mostly
i now constantly see people pulling a scrunched up mask out of their back pocket and putting it on as they walk in 7-11
and then promptly removing it as they leave

Of course in places where a mask is required for entry such as most temples and malls and 7-11 etc
people will be wearing them when

Your comment is completely off topic. The thread was started stating "limited usage, email, torrents", meaning no heavy gaming or anything like that.

Everyone thinks they know exactly what they want and will do, now, at this moment in time. What if there is a wiring problem in your computer room, and the Thai electrician needs all day to fix it? Laptop... you pick it up and move it to the living room. Or the million other reasons being able to move your entire computing station in seconds come in handy. Not to mention the fact that you can take it out if need be, for repairs or computing needs.

News flash: only old people, gamers and office workers buy desktops. It is stupid to buy a desktop for the op's usage. He gains nothing and loses a ton of flexibility. There are super beefy laptops with nice, huge monitors the op can look into. He wont have this gigantic, waste-of-space doorstop banging into his shins.

Seriously, the only reason he asked for a desktop is he did not know better. But now he does. Ask some other knowledgeable folk. All that other stuff can be added... external ssd etc, and for cheaper too.Hope you do good with the info you have been lucky enough to have been given.

i was just commenting on your broad statement "they are just as powerful."
and your other comment "the only reason they make them anymore..."
which your reasoning is completely false

as you mentioned OP was after something basic, so how powerful is irrelevant as he will get what he pays for

again don't mean to go off topic and hijack thread
but stupidity should always be corrected imo

BTW i am not old, or an office worker and i don't play games
i also recommended the OP go for an AIO ???? (larger screen)
most older people don't need to be moving the PC from room to room or taking it out with them

How can you think the death count is still the same as the flu with 150K US Covid deaths in less than 6 months while flu deaths range from 20 to 60K per year.

Globally the death count is the same as the flu
Flu Kills 646,000 People Worldwide Each Year: Study
if it makes it easier for you just change "everyone" to "most people"????

people are being counted as covid death simply because they test positive (guidance from CDC) regardless of what actually kills them
many have underlying conditions, not to mention the financial incentive to hospitals to diagnose them with covid
(negative test results can still be diagnosed as positive according to FDA testing protocol)

in the UK 95% of "covid deaths" have pre-existing underlying conditions
    https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-daily-deaths/

then we have people being shot 7 times, but "died from covid"
Man who tried suicide by cop to avoid COVID-19 death succumbs to virus

and thousands more people reported as "covid deaths" who were never tested
New York City adds 3,700 to death toll of coronavirus without ever having tested them

Do you even try to think before posting something?

Yes, I have decided and yes there is some useful advice.

What did you decide to do ?
i think a few following this thread are just curious to see what you go for in the end

You should get a laptop. Even a chunky one. Forget desktops, the only reason they make them any more is people our age still think they are better, or cheaper. Laptops are sold in much higher quantities so the comparable specs to desktop can even be cheaper. You can move it, it takes up less space, they have good warranties, they are just as powerful.

Find me a "just as powerful" laptop with similar spec to my PC shown in this thread.

This thread was good until you two guys hijacked it waffling on about deliveries.

Start your thread if all you want is to bicker about Kerry Express

    Hence:
"This thread is about a new PC
please do stay on point instead of rambling on "
    ????‍♂️

i was not bickering about Kerry or any delivery service that offers COD
just pointing out the stupidity in some peoples comments about delivery
as i don't think stupidity deserves to go uncorrected in any thread.

have you decided what your plan is yet ?
lots of useful advice here already

If you do look inside the parcel and the goods are not as ordered, you will not have the hassle of taking it back to say the Kerry depot after downloading and printing the return sheet, and then waiting for your refund. Is that not difficult to understand?

again, that is NOT the responsibility of the delivery man/company.
goods being correct and as stated is the responsibility of the seller
regardless how inconvenient it may be for you to return goods later

This thread is about a new PC
please do stay on point instead of rambling on

pretty much the basic net surfing, watching vids, downloading and watching movies, tv shows from torrent files, emails, spreadsheets, photo editing a little bit, google drive google photos, things like that.

Nothing that requires too much brain power or heavy application type stuff.

So still undecided but I do quite like the idea of swapping out my crappy sempron 140 processor for something better as mentioned above, even the FX-6300 at 1000 + baht has some appeal.  Gonna talk to my tech guy and get his opinion.

I can do things step by step until satisfaction is gained.

if you want the cheapest option, yes just upgrade what you already have as much as possible
and if going the cheaper route
why even look for a pre built machine
when its quite easy and cheaper to buy the parts and build yourself

You are not only paying for delivery. You are paying for the goods as well, so I would want to have a quick shuftie to see what's inside the box, and I do regularly if it is something of value, over Bht 1000 say.

the goods inside the parcel are of no concern to the man/company delivering the parcel
it is really not that difficult to understand.

Many on ME don't meet the requirements for 1 year extensions.

    you may assume this
from what i see here and from those i speak with who are on ME, most stuck here can meet the requirements
and i say "stuck" as those on ME visa's usually travel like myself
and do not really want to be here full time 365 days a year and never going anywhere else

TVF members on 1 year extensions (usually those on retirement extensions not even marriage)
just assume, EVERYONE that is not on a 1 year extension just like they are putting money in the bank like they did
must not be able to meet the financial requirements like them, which is completely false
yes there may be a few that cannot meet the requirements, they are the few
and they will need to do whatever they must do,
we are not really here to discuss how the few can dodge the legal requirements
but the steps people must take to remain here LEGALLY
so the exceptions are of no concern and not worth discussing.
and certainly not worthy of being brought into discussions by those who are not even on ME marriage visa's
