'An uproar on Thai social media'. Is that supposed to be significant? And if so, why?
only if it's caused by pesky farang who should not be here!!! "not their country, go home, thai people know best"

euh - what's wrong with sticking torpedo-like "gear" up your anus?
many "modern" males actually like that ?
i think soapies even do it for a small fee these days..

I like o'l Vern, but he sure doesn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed either. Insulting rich and powerful people in a media interview. What did he expect was going to happen?
truly intelligent people in LOS are a rare breed. locals and aliens alike. the real intelligent THAI i have met were expats operating/living abroad. and i'm not talking "beauty salons" or "massage parlors" girls but real intellectuals who can think critically, including about their own country and countrymen.
? and no this is not THAI bashing. any sane person, with a brain, voicing her/his opinion can end up in jail here.- 1

Elon, you just lost 10 years of credibility in one emotional Tweet, because your ego was dented because your mini submarine was bunk. This will haunt you forever.
i don't think so. worst case scenario is he comes up with PEDO proof. that guy is capable of a lot of GOOD and BAD things ?

fully agree. the sheer mass-hysteria in thais has everything todo with poor education, zero critical thinking, inflated feelings of nationality (read: superiority) and the fact that groups activities are considered sanook. ps. the honcho that delivered the shirts and hats will have an extra bottle of black "laben" (sic) tonight ?

Not sounding ungrateful but the standard of education the Wild Boars get and what is required for entry into Naresuan are entirely different worlds and bearing in mind that not one cap fits all , not everyone on the team has the capability of doing a UNI degree.
they will get a CAVE ENGINEERING PHD... based on experience.

You are right on the spot with this comment. What the university should do is to make the offer, if the boys can show that they are worthy of such a gift regarding education success they will later have the possibility to recieve such a gift.
Why not make the coach the PRIME MINISTER and the rest of the Wild Boar gang MINISTERS?

Well maybe the doctors (especially the psychiatrist) want to shield them for a while from sensationalist footage / comments about the rescue.

Lets hope he doesn't fall in love with an Isaan hottie. Could cost him more than his submarine ?
On a serious note. The guy is a business man not some charity guru. every opportunity to gain popularity for his comercial projects will be taken.
We all know how Thai people react to people like him: with awe because they focus on wealth, money and status. 75% of thai however isn't capable using PAYPAL.

10 years ago, the standard of English on Thaivisa was much higher. I don't hold out much hope of improvement.
10 years ago the standard of TV in general was higher.

A language doesn't spread in five minutes; Thai language is spoken only in Thailand, English began with colonisation then USA which invented so many things and exported them all over the world : better English than Chinese ( but as said above, things can change in the future ; in two centuries , which language ? )
if i were young i would learn CHINESE & SPANISH. now i speak and read 4 languages (3 fluent) and can speak thai (enough for daily chats/life, not enough to discuss the big bang or the complexities of belgian federalism ;-))

He's a Shan. In CM all my friends are Shan and I find them very much brighter, intelligent etc. than most Thai people.
not only shan, basically all etnics in myanmar explaining why even MON's and KAREN's and BURMESE quickly learn Thai language, knowing it's a good thing to speak that language too. thai are lazy and self-centered beings as they are taught to be like that from early age. they look down on their neighbours and look down on the west. the will to EVOLVE in myanmar or laos is 10x stronger than here because thai have all they need: cheap chinese consumer goods, 24/7 7/11, internet and rice. when i was working in myeik and dawei there were plenty of THAI businessmen there only speaking thai. zero english, zero burmese. their staff were locals who spoke thai. the funny thing was the staff was much more witty then the bosses and laughed with the utter incompetence of the hand that feeds them ?

i have worked in myanmar and english is not that widely spoken as often suggested here. in the cities OK but off the beaten track surely not. the educational system has been extremely poor to non-existent for decades and remote hilltribes barely speak Burmese let alone English. however, UNI-kids in general speak good english compared to the Thai who are a complete shame to be honest. their accent is a disaster, their grammar is a disasters, their fear to speak caused by the FACE-farce is a disaster...

It was a great scene to hear him communicate with the two British divers. Not so good when out of 12 kids he was the only one he could speak basic stuff and he is Burmese.
Thailand is generations away from having a proficient English speaking nation.
euh correction, not burmese but hilltribe which is a big difference. burmese are bpama. hilltribe'rs have different languages and customs. it's like calling a spanish a portugese. many of those hill tribes boys were actually stateless and live HERE and have gone to school HERE too. if he spoke good english he has learned it here somewhere from someone and surely not in some remote border area of shan state ?

40+ people died which is a bloody shame. people on holiday. often coming here for their very first time since many chinese cannot afford a holiday each year. i've been on a boat several time here and never went inside the vessel. the few times i was forced to do so in myanmar i felt very uncomfy. even for long trips between myeik and kawthoung i stayed on the roof...

i left after 19 years ?
i was 23 when i started living here, never had local gf, never a family or similar burden.
i worked here legally (not as teacher so don't jump to conclusions) had great life til it was time to move on.
i never built a house. my maximum rent was 6000thb all included. i had many local friends. i visit them 2x a year.
i'm in spain now and soon off to Hungary to prospect ?
i'm 45 years old so i am still adventurous.
