  1. Hi. I'm planning on visiting Thailand with a multiple entry visa, which is valid for 6 months. As far as I understand, I can time my last re-entry so that I get almost 8 months, and then extend it by 30 days too, for a total of almost 9 months in Thailand. Is this correct? If this is my plan, am I allowed to enter Thailand with a return flight ticket for about 9 months later?

(To clarify, I'm not asking for the exact date, because I understand this depends on when the visa is approved and so on. But rather, I want to know if it's around 9 months, or for example 6 months, or what?)

If more than 5 -10 mins away from the bar soi, central shopping mall etc or if you have any other interests apart from the above then get a motorbike. If you travel inter province to nong khai phon phisai so phisai bung kan or so on, then maybe get a car. I used to just hire a car everytime i landed which was costly. In the meantime i hired a motorbike for 200b a day if in town. I rented an apartment in udon for a while which was near a tesco lotus and the big highway but nothing else.

that said there is tuk tuks around and there is buses that can take you to other provinces if you dont mind risking your life with the minivan madness and what not. Take walks to or around nong prajak public see the famous duck lol.

    Would've been sweet. Unfortunately I don't have any license/experience

It’s a decent place for what you’re looking for. There are bars if you want them, plenty of restaurants, shopping malls,  western stores and most of all friendly people.

    Sounds good!

I would not come to Udon city for Night Life I mean. ?

    To small.

I - same most come here because my Gf is from that province. ??

Oh haha. That's good then. I'm mainly looking for a place to settle into a comfortable routine, work a little, relax a little, and see if everyday expat life could be for me.

I live since many years, 67 km away and am therefore often there, my nearest bigger town, but -  I would not choose Udon Thani for that ?  "interested in eating, walking, and going to bars."

Hehe, well, I guess walking isn't my main priority. As long as I can move around a bit. Bars and food should be fine, right? Do you recommend further outside?

  6. I'm wondering if it's feasible to stay in Udon Thani for two months without a car or motorbike? Are the city streets walkable, or heavy traffic all over?

Would you recommend I look for condos in any particular area? I'm generally interested in eating, walking, and going to bars.

Can just show up and have a look around , although it would be better to already have a place to move into , how  much are you looking to pay and in which area ?

Hmm ok. I havent researched any area yet, but close to central (walking distance), small, and quiet! Most condos in that category should be well within my price range

I'll take a look at the facebook group as suggested above, in that case, and at least have a list ready to check out.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

Hiking? Seriously? The heat and humidity (and rain) would render this most unpleasant (to me anyway), unless you're thinking of hiking on the top of a mountain in the cold season at night! Though a lot of the mountain areas are spectacular.

Lethal snakes are also common, and this is no joke.

Having said that I've walked up and down some of the waterfall and national park trails and enjoyed them.

Oh yeah, you might be right. I'm not sure I should call it hiking, what I'm after. I just want to know that I'll have somewhere to move around a bit every day, and preferably get away into some nice nature once in a while. I don't want to be stuck because I don't have a driver's license!

Great post villagefarang . I am always awe struck by the quality of your photos and insight, Thanks

    ps

In my 10 years or more here I can count one one hand the tail end of snakes I have seen, sure lots of tracks but not one encounter and I ride my MBT and walk daily

Oh right, MTB, I forgot about bikes. Do you need to drive first, or can you bike right out of town to get to some good places?

    And great photos, villagefarang.

  10. I'm wondering if Chiang Rai is a nice city to walk around in? The central parts? Or is there too much traffic everywhere?

And I've also read that there's some nice hiking available in the surrounding mountains. Is it easy to get to some of these places and back without a car/motorbike? Could one do it spontaneously in the afternoon for example, without planning in advance?

    Haha. It can be confusing.

Just to help you narrow it down....Most people holidaying in rawai are families who are usually renting a less expensive pool villa and probably renting a car to traverse long distances. Depending on where you are staying, the closest decent beach is Nairharn, and it could be a 10-15 minute drive from you.

The fact is that most Phuket tourists stay in centrally located west coast towns of Patong, followed by Karon/kata, Kamala, Surin, Bangtao.

Do you really want to stay in a super-quiet and relatively isolated location down in the far south of phuket island?

Keep in mind...You will almost certianly need a motorbike rental in Rawai,  and it will be a  30-40 minute one-way drive each visit to Patong should you feel the need for active entertainment and the biggest variety of dining.

Hmm hmm hmm, good points! Now that you put it clearly like that I... I'll have to sleep on it haha

Edit: I didn't realize until now that my math was wrong earlier. Thought that I couldn't afford Karon/kata based on your guesses. But now I see that I can! Thanks again! You've been a great help

    I agree.

You can easily find a place on the prime west coast within a short walking distance to a good beach and all the amenities.

If you desire a busy nighlife, stay in Patong.

If you desire a better beach, but not too far from patong, consider karon or kamala.

If you desire more quiet lifestyle with a good beach, and dont need as much nightlife, look at surin, bangtao, or kata.

You wont even need to rent a motorbike if you are staying in any of the aforementioned beachside areas.

Rawai tends to be for the long-term working/retired expats that have a car and  go to beach once in a blue moon. It tends to be cheaper in rawai for a number of reasons.

If you are only staying for 3 months it would be nice to be walking distance  to a good beach and all the amenities

Karon or Kamala seem like a good match. You (or someone) wouldn't happen to know the rent prices there? Only found one online at 10k baht/month. But that one required a 1 year contract.

I'll have to check it out ofc. But would be nice to know what to expect

Even in high season you should have no problem finding a place on the spot in your target area. Prices in Rawai I can't comment.

    Okay thanks! That's good

  14. Hi. I'm going to try remote work for 3 months Nov-Jan, and currently I'm set on Phuket. I would like some info to help me plan.

Based on an old thread I found here Rawai seems like a good place. I looked at some ads online and found that I might be able to get a 1 room condo for 15k baht or more, mostly more. Does anybody know it would be possible to just show up and find such an apartment in the lower price range? Or are they usually all rented out during that period?

Is it possible to find cheaper if I skip going through an agency?

I don't have a driver's license. However, I'm not very keen on moving around, more than walking around the neighborhood streets (bars, supermarket, maybe gym). Will this work in that area? And is it easy to find transportation to e.g. Nai Harn Beach? Cheap? Or would you recommend another location on the island?
