You are not just paying for the beer. It is not a 7/11. Cheap Charlies seem to suffer from an intelligence deficit.  Bars have all kinds of overheads, bills,  maintenance costs, staff payroll expenditure, cleaning costs, furniture, licence costs, utility bills etc etc. These cheap Charlies are not being ripped off as no one forces them to go there. I think a bit of self awareness might come in handy: you are not wanted at such bars. You bring people down with your drab clothes and churlish attitudes and your ultra frugal lifestyle. Penny pinchers are irritating and depressing company.  Nobody wants them in their bars. Take a hint: the higher prices are in part designed to deter Cheap Charlies.

I am simply stating facts, and i am the last person to be called a Cheap Charlie. I spend more than 3 average retirees do in bars.

So on a 70 baht bottle you think 30 baht profit is reasonable and enough to cover rent , wages , electric , water, internet, cable tv, police payments, sign tax , up keep and licences?

And if it’s not enough , it’s not your concern really , after all you primary concern is getting cheap booz so you can watch some sports.????

Quoting this one but also replying on your previous post / reply back to me.

Do you even in live in CM? There is no police paying in most bars in that area, only if they request staying open later. I know of owners with well running bars, Zoom bar is only growing and not paying anything. Aside of that, there is almost nowhere salary paid for staff, they only earn on drinks.

The ones that do pay salary, pay really small ones but then again; that won't be a girl bar.
Also with reasonable prices the average margin on a large beer is around 40-50 baht, which is totally normal if you DO run the bar properly and get enough customers in return.

I think the OP's right to consider where his exchange rate floor is and to decide what his active plan B should be, what if the currency keeps on falling, it's better to plan and potentially act now at leisure rather than to be forced to act later in haste.

Well, I doubt it be better in neighbouring countries then as well... Even if the 40k decreased 15% more, he still be fine (if using a different path to obtain the visa as of financial proof).

But if any, I guess i would switch between Cambodia, Laos and Thailand for averages and fun.

  4. 1) The visa situation can be resolved in many creative ways (if any problem at all in the first place).
    2) It is easily doable to live a really comfortable life with the 40k baht.
    3) All you have to do is not take bar girls more than a few times a month (if desired at all).
    4) Have some drinks at home before going out to a bar (if drinking a lot) and not too often as well.

What is the problem at all really? Unless you want to live the hardcore party life multiple days a week, there isn't any I can imagine. You can easily have an average of 1k baht a day in spending money after rent etc, which would even cover daily beers at the bars (half would even still allow you doing so).

P.S. I personally think that the baht will be less strong again in the mid term future, pretend you only have 35k already and save that difference in the mean while.

  5. The tuk tuk to karaoke after normal bars close in Chiang Mai are known to be a scam / dangerous.
You most likely went to Chang Klan road, I have been locked up there myself once and ended up paying 2000 baht for 1 big heineken and 2 drinks for a girl (they wanted more initially) and this was without a karaoke room or food too.

Even after paying I still needed to run, there were over 5 muay thai guys, the tallest I have ever seen.
Lucky for me that I run fast and they were too lazy to continue on bikes in the rain.

  6. I've been on tourist visa's for most of the past 5-6 years and never really had any problem at all.
Now since December only had 30 day on arrivals, extensions at CM immigration, 2x Mae Sai and 1 single entry from Vientiane.

All I know is that it helps a lot to fly back home once a year and not taking the cheapest options (Cambodia / Laos only). I guess it depends on the IO, where you are from etc. I do avoid Don Muang airport though.

  7. Hi there,

I am going to get married in the next months as my girlfriend is pregnant.

I am wondering if the Thai embassy in Savanakhet, Laos currently requires financial proof for the marriage visa.

Some older posts here were saying that this is not required to obtain the actual visa.

Also I am a bit confused wether you initially get a temporary non-o within Thailand and then get the permanent one outside, or the other way around.

Thank you in advance for replying and giving advice.
