For what it's worth my read of people that have had 30 day visa exempt/waiver problems has been that they used 99% of the validity of each  (& subsequent ) visits.

Spent 5 months there in 2017.2+1 then 2 months.Still got q? by Immigration on the last leg.

What is the visa waiver equivalent for US passport holders in Malaysia ? 90 days for Aussies.Not sure how often that could be pushed.Johor Bahru just across from Singapore possibly do-able for me.With visits frequently across the border, like many Malays.Or the Elite I guess.

Yes of course, I have driven down further to through Krabi were we have stayed, and at Koh Lanta, Trang, and Songkhla, beautiful areas, but a little too close to the border for my liking with all the problems they have further down that way. 

Most of the problems down south are three provinces right on the border, cannot remember the names. Spent some time with educated Thai friends down Phattalung way, overnighted there & Nakhon Si Thammarat. Heavy rain & possible flooding down that way at times. My friend has a house in Hua Hin inland a KM or so. Seemed like a pleasant enough place/area.

2017 Stayed in Thailand for 5 months.

Multi entry stay x two months , with an extension of a month the first entry.

Flew out , flew back transited at Swampy for three hours & then flew onward.Returned for final two months.

(Get your airports arrival depart in sync, just need to transit.)

Went to a language school but not an Educational visa.Minor hassles & questions on return leg that were sorted quickly. Why here /working ?? etc.No proof of funds asked for.

48 year old Australian.They wanted to see proof of $8000 in a bank a/c at the embassy application stage even though supplied a bank issued Proof of Balance.(HaHa I had bought another plane ticket & sort of protested, which they laughed about.)
