  1. Twice recently, including this morning, I've seen a homeless woman near Tha Pae gate. She's probably about 16-22 years old and unless my eyes are deceiving me, looks to be about 3-5 months pregnant. I was going to try and talk to her today and find out what her story is and what sort of help she might need but she was sleeping and I didn't want to disturb her. Plus, I have no idea if she speaks any English.

Anyway, I'm only in Chiang Mai for two more weeks but am willing to help however I can. If anyone else has any thoughts or ideas or wants to help, post away.

Why don't you marry her and raise her child as your own.

If you can't contribute with something worth reading - then don't

well Bergen, beauty is in the eye of the beholder; I thought it was quite funny, therefore worthwhile

  2. Thanks for the spelling advice, appreciate it! All my Thai collegues down here in Phuket spell it with a Ph, must be a Phuket thing!

    Lithobid

    Go

errmmm, I think he may have been poking fun at your spelling of various English words actually!

    like your "collegues" above

and the "resient and comming and appartments" in your original post

never mind, I am sure we all understood

  3. Although I only rent I am doing a some rewiring and a new bathroom.

I was recommended a plumber/electrician. He's a nice chap and seems steady and neat. He did not however understand what a ring main was, nor how to calculate simple volt/amp/watt/resistance formulas. I am trying to help educate him rather than changing.

When I asked him to do a little run of copper he said he'd never done it before. This is so I can get hot to the basin and kitchen sink too. The kitchen is outside several metres away. I think galvanised would sink the heat for a bit longer than is desirable (is this true?), so I choose copper. Problem is.....yes, he's never done copper before. I have however.

Can anyone suggest a way I can use copper for this one small job but do it economically without buying blowtorch etc? Or is there a heat resistant plastic that can also go in a wall.....I have been told the blue stuff is not up to it....is there another grade?

They do not use ring mains here sj, that is why he did not understand

As hot water systems are also unusual, the normal person to do this would be a guy who does aircon. They charge by the metre! It can therefore work out very expensive, but for a small job, no problem. They braze the joints rather than solder them, which is overkill, but I suppose that comes from the aircon experience.

  4. I recently picked up the missus from the International Terminal and while waiting helped an Aussie couple find a taxi into town. A taxi driver wearing the songtaew logo of twisted cables (nakon something or other) told them they would need to pay a 50 baht surcharge to leave the airport. I put them straight and showed them the fixed price board and found a driver who accepted 120 baht for central cm. Is this a new scam from the songtaew company taxis?

I suppose that is just a taxi driver trying to make some money, the B50 surcharge.

as for you finding them a driver who would accept B120, he must have been pleased!! I normally pay only B15 when leaving the airport to central CM in a songtaew, along with other passengers. Maybe B20 if alone

  5. I was going to say the one near Luang Prabang, but then read on...

as for romantic place, is that a hijack of the thread Hong? unless you think waterfalls are the most romantic places

  6. yes, I saw their selection! one maker, two models

The problem with the Pick-ass version is that you cannot put any pressure through the tank, except for gravity feed. Using a pump before the heater tank induces stresses that will eventually make the tank fail

so you need a second pump after the heater to get the water into the house, making it complicated and possibly extra problems (equalising the pressure between the hot and cold supplies)

oh well, I will keep looking

  7. OK, so I have read this topic and cannot find any answer to the original question, except for Pick-Ass, who seem to be the cheapest importer at around B24,000 for the smallest

any news on the cheap Chinese versions?

my electrician has told me his friend, an aircon man, makes ugly solar panels for about B15.000

    I will keep you updated!

  8. Nothing? I know there are some accomodations off Thapae Road, are any of them apartments?

We are currently rebuilding a double shophouse, 5 stories. The choice was between a guesthouse and apartments; we went for the latter

It is intended to create 9 flats, modern and well decorated. One of them will be a nice penthouse. They will all be around 45sqm, or so

I expect the rental to be around 6/8000pm, but we wish to sell longer leases. Maybe there will be options of 1, 2 and 5 year leases, with appropriate discounts

the location is just outside the old city walls, in a quiet soi, 10 mins walking from Tha Pae gate etc

unfortunately, they will not be ready until the end of the year (probably), but if anyone is interested, please pm me.

  9. The old adage "If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all" springs to mind.

No need to read or post in this thread if you don't have anything nice to say.

but you just posted! what was nice?

anyway, TA22, you are obviously a brave and friendly person

I am amazed at the negative, almost aggressive, replies to your initial post

hope you meet some like-minded people (not me, I love sleeping at night)

  10. Thanks for all you excelent reactions, wise guy's lessons and advises, I have never been fined in 20 years time, so never payed attention to the amount of a fine. My chopper was parked very close to a small sidewalk and bothering no one at all. ,,No parking sign,, out of view.

It might be a subject for another topic but if you realy think they love you that much, look at recent changes from the immigration. And there will be much more to follow. Please be realistic Thailand is a nice place to stay, but it's not heaven. Comparing to 20 years ago there has changed a lot for the worst. The best years have pased by already. So do not be ashamed to keep your eyes open wide and poster your criticts. :o

well, after whingeing on about your small fine, I am suprised that you never stopped to consider that your Thai friends may have been wrong

Chiang Mai is blocked by illegal parking and the police are obviously determined to stop it

400B is a cheap price to pay for being a public nuisance

  11. so guys, what is the 'new' bubble like.

has it had a major facelift? how about the music as it was appallingly out of date, the djs were a good 5 years behind the times

does it matter? out-of-date music can be great to dance to

    just go and have fun

as for Ladyboys being banned, I suppose there can be some who are just into picking your pockets, and give the rest a bad name. Some are great company and know how to enjoy life

    Bubble is OK
