One of the convenient things about dual-boot is if something goes wrong and I have to determine if it's Windows or my hardware I can check if the problem is in Linux as well.  Case in point, I had some sound problems, wasn't sure if it was Windows device drivers or the hardware.  Of course, could have booted into Linux from a USB stick as well...

 

 

provide a list of applications you use... i will give you back a Linux equivlent for all of them.If you are locked due to files format share... it is not the same.

For more precision, Apple OSX and android is not realy Linux, but Unix systems adapted.

The philosophy and way to do things around Linux vs Unix are different.

Unix is much more a "monolitic" system than Linux. Linux is kernel only with things around, but Unix is more close to material features and when Unix is updated, all is linked strongly (not Linux).

So Linux is perfect for versatility (but not so normalized than Unix). Unix is much more stable and conventional (normalized).

That is also why industries of "normal user" desktop end user choose to construct there own OS with Unix system.

The implementation of the Kernel in Unix has to be validate by Unix own system mainteners (not the Linux kernel one). So Unix offer a best suitable driver for materials they choose to follow. Linux has more drivers, but not the best one sometimes. And kernel evolution is quick... Linux users are more like 'testers' than Unix users.

Administrate Unix is more complicate than administrate Linux also.

But if you need high end sefe and stable system, you will go for Unix (but big work and good knowledge for do what you want at first install).

Linux is a kind of kernel with added things around. You should look at wikipedia for understand and know the storry of linux and what is linux.

Around Linux Operator Systems, there is many distributions (a distribution is a system with many feature embeded, with it's own organisation and maintainer's. For each classification of distribution, there is a defined "package manager"... who is the way the distribution install applications).

- Linux has a big community people growing... and then there is many documentations for each applications and for administrate the system.

- Linux has no virus... you will not have a kind of virus application who lock you for ask to update and paid for this or that other virus protection (who can not protect your computer well)

- Linux use and share libraries for many software installed (Windows can install many time the same libraries for many software, so the disk occupation is quickly full occuped by double libraries and other things). There is also some Linux distribution who choose to do the same due to stability request on particular applications (NixOS for example)

- Linux ask user to be more able to administrate system than Windows, because user should understand what is a computer and are responsable (Windows users are, most of the time, a "click-gamer end-user".

- There is not so ability on Linux to play game than on windows (choices are limited, because it is a commercial situation), but obviously, Linux has an application who can emulate windows and by the way, it is possible to make running windows applications with Linux (the limitation is to use GPU in this situation)

- Linux can not make running Autocad well (that is the only one big limitation for professionals).

- Linux systems are able to mount any (if not all) file systems. A hard drive (or any files systems supports) need to have a format to be able to share files. Than, linux has so many good file systems than Windows doesn't have (NTFS is also much more bad than any simple ext4 linux fs or other one from BSD or Apple). But i can not explain you why so easy if you doesn't understand what is a file system.

Also, there is some other systems... like Unix BSD like (Google OS, so... Android... are these inspired one's, like also apple who is originaly a Unix system. These one are more stable, so not so versatile (but in fact... Apple new politics is much more commercial killer than old Apple was, and then users has to paid many times to be able to use applications on new systems every 5 years). There is also some free Unix systems like FreeBSD or other... but these one is much more for advanced qualified end users (most of the time for create network servers due to his very high stability and secure things).

If i would resume, i would say that for 99% of applications, Linux can do what ever you want for free and with high level security. But you should NOT be lazy to understand what is a computer and what is an operator system. Linux users who want to install things and be on edge of technology should "be able to"... Windows user just paid and click.

It is not the same way of doing things and thinking. If you want to be free, then you need minimal knowledge (and that is not locked to this domain, it is a real true all around the world for what ever and anything else).

That make Linux feeling like a more "geek" system for normal users, and a more dev station for great users (the one who make applications or the one who can administrate everything).

I love Linux for my own home desktop on "PC station" and also for my laptop (i use archlinux because the idea is "KISS": Keep It Simple Stupid... that mean you choose to have a system very simple and a versatile distribution you will be able to administrate yourself).

I love Unix for his security and big stability (I use FreeBSD for my own network servers on a Virtual Private Server online.. without any graphic user interface who, in this situation, serve nothing).

I have sometime to use Windows (i don't like that.. but...) for work because of use of Autocad and because of some othzer who only "know" Windows (and Windows doesn't care about normalisations files... they want users to paid, so...). Many time i have to repair friends computers because of many thousand of virus and bugs... little by little, i arrive to make them understand that they can use Linux for free and no more have any problems with viruses.

I have to use sometimes Apple OSX because of friends (i had one 7 years ago but i stop because it was ugly the way they use users for make money... actually they doesn't want to make software with a long time life support... many people leave Apple because of that inb professional industries).

Every system can be "good". Depend of your target use and also of your way to concept freedom (and this is a political choice most of the time). But i have a high level of knowledge for administrate Linux and Unix systems, i also understand perfectly what is a computer and how it works deeply, i also do development in more than 20 langages of programmations and Linux offer so good efficient and slim tools for that (i3wm, tmux, vim, emacs, and all the langages libraries on top edge).

Actualy, Linux is more popular because everybody can be able to use it after it was well installed (this step is important for them... they should be in contact with a high end administrator for have exactly what they need i think).

My experience for other users is that:

My old tant (who is now dead) was able to use Antergos Linux for many years... she had a laptop with Windows 7 (who was better than Windows 10 in my opinion) and was able to use it very well, very easy because i do install everything she need. She said that her computer was never so fast, and her application never so stable, also she has more place on her hard drive than before. She was very happy.

I do install Linux for family and friends... all of them are very happy. The only one's not so much are gamers and high end users for architectures jobs.

Hope this will help computer users to well understand what can be an operator system and especially Linux.

You can do exercising a lot, it serve nothing if you eat sugar a lot.

This is the problem here in Thauland that sugar is present a lot and every where.

Industries are very happy to make you eat this poison (and milk also). There is so many good food in Thai food, but capitalism industries lie and sale you poisons and doesn't provide a real instruction about that.

what ever material is utilized, i can see that the concept is "mak naï" and absolutely not "work good and strong for details, quality and efficiency". Just move the window or look at details and where the air can go... there is many holes everywhere, it is definitely not serious (but i may not see all of them).

And this is for absolutely all the products there: ground studies, basement constructions, steel quality, electricity installation (from the city directly), plugs connectors, no ground protection, wires links (wrapped and "shatertoned"...), no normalization, ridiculus cement wall thickness (7.5cm), thermal and sound isolation (where there is some), and look at the roof... OMG ! And what about wood knowledge for construction ? zero, from the cut of the tree to the final step (exception for bamboo maybe ?).

Also, if you go for shopping, they mix inches (they are talking about "new") and centimeters, and many times for same products (it is incredible and add confusions where sailors most of the time doesn't know really what they are talking about). They no have hydraulic lime and doesn't know exactly what is inside cement or any other product from industry (that is good for industry, but not for builders).

OK, everybody from Europe who work or has worked in construction see and understand that in fact, Thailand is not the country of knowledge, nor building efficiency.

But why not learn about "farang" about that ? We have thousands of years of knowledge for constructions, open your eyes (not only building but also roads and electricity and much more). Because in fact, you can build a cheap little house and do it very well (but not the "mak nai" way), that is full compatibility with Buddhism mind thinking also, and the construction will stay long time nice instead of be dirty or broken in 2 years (that is also respect of monaie because you not loose to much).

Thailand is very nice and good country, people are also most of the time very nice and clean.

But for a foreigner, it is almost difficult (or most of the time impossible) to just tell when something is wrong or bad; like poor lazy/amator constructions (not because of cheap... people there prefer to buy nice big pick up), low electricity level construction who are dangerous, trash plastic or what ever down the floor or what ever is definitely bad. If you just follow and speak what the King said (and who is nice), just because you are farang it can quickly become an injury... that is racism. If you just add that you just love the King and tell exactly same than him... people just stop to speak, that make them have thinking more, because it is true. By the time they can change a little bit the concept of "farang".

Many farang (out of trash tourists areas) help a lot families and economy... for free. Most of farang have a high level knowledge for technology. Most of them are very good and respect everybody.

We should be able to learn, what ever human is... we can learn something only if we have humility.

That contradiction between good Buddhist culture, respect of people and big ego (so big that you can see that there is not humility at all) is dramatic. Koh Tao is a very nice island, and there is nice diving clubs. And also, as i can saw, there is also some places there for young people to drink a lot without any restriction.

The facts is that i not see any police in this place... and maybe this is a problem.

Because sure... a young guy with bad (or no) education who can become a raptor or a really predator will be like in his own garden.

That is not a safe place for teenagers and stupid peoples (i not blame stupidity, we can be all stupid by the time and a victim is still a victim, not necessary stupid).

Also, why sale alcool when someone is already drunk ? Here is a country where alcool can not be sale some special days and before some time... Where is the logic when it is legal to sale alcool to someone to young and/or someone already drunk ?

Thailand is a very nice place, Thai culture is also a rare good thinks for human relations. And i love Thailand for that.

But guys... look at your comportment on the road. It is a shame:

_ not respect traffic lights

_ ride to fast (and also inside a village with house at 5m from the road)

_ drive after drink alccol

_ double in full bend without any visibility

_ double on a continuous line

_ not use flashers

_ never turn your head (are you so lazy or do you not understand the problem there ?) for check if someone/car/motorbike is in the blind spot before to turn

_ double on left side

_ be overloaded

_ have a wrongly secured cargo

I can not understand how this is possible and how you can talk about Buddha after that comportment. All of them have Buddha on the window and drive like a criminal.

Thailand people (who, most of the time are very good people) said many time: "chock dii" or "mai pen arai". Ok, but is it true also for foreigners ? I mean, what Siddarta Gautama life was talking about ? Here in Thailand, culture is a lot linked with Teravada Buddhism. This culture doesn't talk about money, but about live together and respect life, speak about to never speak bad, never judge strongly.

So the question is: "This people who speak strongly with poor foreigners who just search for luck... are they buddhist ? Do they really follow there own culture ? If yes, why do they speak like that ? No one has the obligation to stop and bring them some kilometers on the way they go... no one. Everybody is free to accept to help a little bit or not at all.

I think there, in Thailand, same than everywhere in other contries, there is people who born with uge money and people who are poor. There is also good people and people who speak and think very bad (money or not). And also, there is kind of mafia.

Finally, what i thinking is that speak about little people who try to discover Thailand with luck and humility are not the problem there. At the same time we are speaking about that, we are no more speaking about important things who can be better fr Thailand economy.

It is definitely a subject for people who doesn't want to have deep reflection.

there is mediatomb dlna server, but also Plex media server, and Kodi (who can provide DLNA server to).

An other one way is also to make running a dedicated home-ciname system (low electric power for low cost with ARM like Raspberyr or Odroid-xu4), then install a Kodi... plug HDMI-2.0 cable to TV, enable HDMI-CEC on TV, add a HDMI-CEC adaptator on your HDMI cable connection (also linked on USB-2.0), then... enjoy freedom.

Also, if you share files by samba server OR a FTP (or sFtp or FTPs) from Linux, your unsafe Windows systems should be also able to read/write on them (directly for samba, or through filezila client for FTP).

all the computers and laptop can boot on Linux and Windows and have dual boot.

But for maximum compatibility for all material on the laptop, there is Clevo (and some others).

Also, you should install a bootloader like Grub (or some others), then use it to boot on what evere OS you've installed.

The virtualization is something who will eat some CPU load and RAM memory, but also you will loose GPU... or you need to passthrough his PCI port to get direct access of your GPU from your virtual guest system(so if you are noob... it will be difficult for you). It works perfectly and i use it for windows-7 running under Qemu/kvm with Nvidia and USB-3.. PCI card direct access.

If you don't know to do it yourself there is two choices (maybe more, the other i don't know them):

1/ take time to learn it by read articles online, go to suscribe with a Linux club and practice/share

2/ paid a specialist (it should have in Thailand... but... not sure, i never see)

Question Linux target (not only Debian): Why a password is not recognized ?

Answers:

1/ forget password (not your case you said)

2/ charset encoding (or locales environment variables) and/or keyboard has been changed and key pressed doesn't provide anymore the same required character

3/ password has been changed and you don't know it

4/ encryption problems due to disk/system administration errors (rare)

How to fix that the easy way ?

1/ create a bootable and usable USB key with Gparted system tools system (download it) on it (Etcher software for noobs help a lot...)

2/ boot on Gparted with your data support (HDD or SSD) connected

3/ recognize the data partition and write carefuly the UUID

4/ if you have more than only one partition (who should be a good administration idea), then delete your root or other unusable partitions where your system is located, hold only your /home dir file sustem container (i expect it to be ext4 fs format)... if it is ciphered... no way...

5/ backup your partition where your personnal data are

6/ re-install a noob distro (ubuntu most of the time is the more accessible for noobs)

7/ at install time, don't erase your data partition, just mount it has.

and voila...

total time work should be between 20 minutes and 4 hours maximum (depend on your knowledge and understanding most of the time).

Next step for safety should be to learn Unix own distribution administration requirement.

To help on a forum is difficult, also it is not the real vocation of this forum to provide help on specific technology like Linux Mint.

Also, Linux is very funny, free, and efficient, but you have to paid by your time for learn and then be able to install it and use it, there is many different distributions (some of them as specific targets) but no one is for loafers.

Most of the time, install it is a little challenge for beginners because of Windows "safety" obstructions and knowledge requirements.

The easy life way should be to eat MacDo food, use Windows software... and no more safety sit and no more private life (easy but expensive, that is an other kind of selection). That's it.

Be free, be courageous, go for Linux.

I find some lime (used for fertiliser/removal bacteria) easy (and i'm far from Bangkok), and i also find a company near Bangkok who sale product like hydrated lime and maybe natural hydraulic lime... i send them an email just yesterday.

Company is "Thai polychemicals Co. LTD" you can find them on alibaba.com and also on there own internet site (3 email addresses links found). I'm actually waiting for an answer from them.
