  1. I have to have a second meter installed in order for MG to install my Home Charger for an electric car.  As I only need to do an overnight charge once a week or so - I've opted for a 15/45 Time of Use meter (digital) which has cheaper rates on weekends, and between 10pm and 9am weekdays (But more expensive rates than a regular meter at peak times)

The existing meter for the house is also a 15/45 meter (analogue).  This isn't on a Time of Use plan, just a regular plan.

The new meter hasn't been installed yet, but it will be run over the road to the house in the same location as the existing electric supply, where the existing supply disappears into the roof to the consumer unit, and the new supply with be run to a consumer unit outside the house in the carport.

I would very much like to take advantage of the Time of Use rates when not using the car charger for my main house supply.  Is this possible to install a transfer switch or similar, so that I can manually switch over to the cheaper rates at off peak times, and back to regular rates at other times?  I'm thinking that it could be installed somewhere near where both supplies are attached to the house prior to going off to the consumer units.

Or am I trying to have my cake and eat it too?

So Neta will install the home charger but they do not run the cables to the PEA pole outside the property. We need to find someone else to do this. What size, spec. Cable is required? Anybody done this already? It will be a separate TOU meter.

    Thanks

I'm still waiting for the car to come into stock (next week) before MG will send the crew around.

I'm hoping the install crew will have a side hustle to do whatever is missing (I expect that a new small consumer unit for the new meter/connection will need to be installed alongside the charger), then I think PEA will install the meter.  I have no clue whether PEA will run the wire from the meter to the consumer unit, or whether I'll have to have the crew back for that part.

At least this thread may serve as a good repository of experiences with getting the chargers installed in various circumstances.

In my case - my circumstance is:-

    PEA

I want a new meter (15/45 TOU) - Time of Use is worth having in my situation for the charger.
MG installers in Chiang Mai - Currently I know they are ok with a dedicated 15/45 meter, but details of what/who happens when and additional costs is still a little unclear.  I will update once I've navigated through it all.

You need to confirm pea will fit the tou meter first. Then you need to install the wiring from where the new meter will be to where you will be charging the car. The new wiring needs to be to spec.

Afterwards pea need to install the meter. Then MG contractor will come and install the charger.

They said that I can have a tou meter for sure, but there was some confusion because they wanted the charger already installed.  Or that were used to that being the case. Which seems weird. They will be calling me later hopefully with more info.

I think you're right yes, it seems the snag is the additional wiring that both MG and PEA require.

At this stage, I think I'll go with the idea to just let the MG installer and PEA hash it out and have them just tell me the bottom line of how much money I need to give to whom.

I can't answer from experience, yet, not got our EV.

Seems a bit odd, I suspect your local PEA have never done a dedicated EV meter.

    Try this: -

Talk to MG and get their installer's details. Get him to organise with PEA.

Do let us know how you get on; this is all pretty new stuff. At least here.

If all else fails you can still charge at a couple of kW with the Granny-Lead.

Ah that's a great idea about getting the installers details.  I'll do that next time I'm taking paperwork to the MG dealer.

I suspect it's because I want a dedicated meter - so presumably PEA want to know they have a consumer unit/fusebox thing to connect up to.  The MG installers probably want the same, but already set up with the dedicated meter.  So its possible that if I go this route - I may need to get a third installer, or a 2 trip install from the MG lot and pay them extra for the consumer unit etc.

Will update this post once I've got it figured out.

    Thanks  ????

  5. Hi All,

I have an MG EP PLUS on order, and they said once we have the car, they will arrange the installers to install the charger.

I have read and see that a dedicated 15/45 meter can be used, and that TOU Tariff can be beneficial if we charge at the right times.

I am a bit confused having just been to PEA to ask about a new dedicated TOU meter install at our house.  They wanted all sorts of info about the Charger, and asked if it is already installed.  When I said I wanted a dedicated meter installing first so that it's all set for when they come to install the charger - they looked at me like I had let off a bad smell.

So, I'm obviously missing something, about what comes first - and the right steps to take.

Can anyone advise what I should be doing in order to prepare for a smooth installation of the  MG Home Charger on its own dedicated 15/45 TOU Tariff meter?  Seems a bit of a chicken/egg situation.

    Many Thanks

  6. Hi All,

I've just put a deposit down on an MG EP PLUS EV - 771,000 after subsidy - 998,000 before.

I am just sat here wondering how the government tax sticker disc works after the first year, and roughly how much money it will cost.  I believe its based on age and engine size usually - but have no idea the calculation - and also how that translates to EV?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  7. Liverpool Consulate shows this:-

    Non-Immigrant Visa category ‘O’ (£50 single entry / £125 multiple entry)
This type of visa is for:-

    • People visiting family – i.e. men who are married to a Thai National, along with your visa application you must produce your marriage certificate and a translation of the certificate is required as evidence. A single entry visa is valid for 90 days and can be extended for a further 30 days. A multiple entry visa is valid for 12 months conditional on leaving Thailand for 48 hours every 90 days.

(They are saying translation is required)

Can someone confirm it is NOT required?

  8. The consulates all seem to have different requirements these days. I will myself get (try to) a Non-O multiple in the coming 2 weeks. I have an appointment at the Cardiff consulate. They had earlier emailed me the following;

"To obtain a one year Multiple Non-Immigrant 'O' Visa on the basis of marriage you will be required to submit a copy of your marriage certificate and copy of your partners Thai I.D or passport."

They confirmed the above when I called to make the appointment, and also confirmed no financial information was required, and that they would issue the visa on the spot without having to get authorisation from the Embassy.

    Fingers crossed.

THanks for this. If you could confirm back on this thread if you are successful, that would be a big help. Im in 2 minds really about Multi or Single Non Imm O, but I would be interested to know if thats an option all the same. I would like to build a history of showing the 400k required for annual extensions at my local office in Chiang Mai, in the hope that that right may be grandfathered if they change the rules within the kingdom. But Im not sure if that is me with wishful thinking.

  9. You can get a single entry non-o based upon marriage to a Thai at the embassy now with no financial proof. You would not need a translation of the marriage certificate, you would also need a copy of your wife's house book and ID card and/or a copy of her passport photo page.

Only the embassy accepts mail in applications now. You have to go in person to the consulaes.

Thanks for that, Can I get the Single Entry in person at Liverpool Consulate for example?

That would perhaps be the most convenient to visit at that time.

  10. Hi Everyone, I am a UK male, married to a Thai for 5 years.

I have done 2 extensions based on marriage here in Chiang Mai. Last year, my father was diagnosed with Terminal Pancreatic Cancer, so last year, to avoid having to worry about re-entry permits each time I needed to visit my father, I went to KL and got a Multi Entry Non O. My Visa runs out May 1st, and ordinarily, I would have left the kingdom and re-entered before that date, and then applied for an extension here in Chiang Mai in the final month of that 90 day entry, for a further year.

HOWEVER - Yesterday I received a call from my mother saying I should come home, as my father is now in decline. I intend to leave Thailand on Wednesday, back to the UK. My concern regarding visas is this:- I dont know how long I will be back in the UK for. I intend to stay in the UK until after my father has passed away, and for a short time to ensure my mother is coping. Therefore, I will almost certainly miss getting back into Thailand before May 1st, in order to take advantage of my Visa.

I have a marriage certicate, copy of wifes ID. Financially, I have 400,000 in Fixed Deposit, and last month, due to me getting thoroughly confused about UK consulates rule changes, I put a futher 400,000 in a seperate fixed deposit. Therefore I have 800,000 total in Bangkok Bank Fixed Deposit accounts.

What are my options at the point I am ready to fly back to Thailand?

Can I get a Multi Non Imm O anywhere in the UK? If so, do I need to prove the 800,000? And if I do need to prove that, will the fact that my fixed deposit books were updated just before I left Thailand be ok? Or would they need to be updated somehow? I do not have my fixed deposits linked to my online banking with Bangkok Bank.

If I can't get a Multi - How quick and easy is it to obtain a single entry Non Imm O based on marriage? What documents are required? I do NOT have an English translation of the Thai Marriage Certificate at present, and obviously do not have much time before I fly to the UK. If I can get a single entry, I can extend that in Chiang Mai upon my return.

Failing the above 2, what are my options? Incidentally, today and tomorrow I have my wifes family staying over, as we have a monk blessing at our house tomorrow, so I am very pushed for available time to sort things. My wife is staying in Thialand whilst I go back to the UK, so she could obtain translations etc if neccesary.

Very Stressed, and confused due to weird disparity in every consul/embassy in the UK stating different things on their website.

PS - As an aside, do people think the requirement for extension based on marriage within the kingdom will be upped to 800,000 rather than 400,000 at some point? This is the primary reason I put that extra money in fixed deposit. But I wont lie, that 400,000 would be very useful if I didn't have to sit on it. Thanks

  11. been wondering the same thing myself. a lot of Thais on facebook are also asking if anyone knows what it means...

So if it's not just be noticing it, it must be something new.

Can't be the dogs thing, why protect only rear corners of the vehicle?

Unlikely to be the new Cd reflector, as they tend to be on sidecars and trailers.

I have only seen them on trucks and bigger vehicles. The probably wouldn't fit smaller vehicles, so maybe that tells us nothing.

    I had two thoughts:-

A primitive device to see if your vehicle is overloaded. If the bottle touches the ground, you're not gonna make it over speed bumps. Etc. unlikely that though, as they seem to be specifically this bright green.

I've seen some trucks with upto 4 on them.

Or, could it be politically related? Conspiracy theory. Hehe. If I have a green bottle, I'm secretly a member of this group or that group. All very hush hush.

  12. post-29383-13927827176481_thumb.jpg

For the past week or so I've been noticing these bright green bottles hanging from the back of trucks and wagons.

Now, I've seen many different things hanging from trucks in the past 10 years, but I'm seeing a lot of this near luminous green bottles recently.

Now maybe it's simply my human pattern seeking nature, but just wondered if someone could shed some light on what they're for? And why bright green?

  13. At this place I had the worst experience in a restaurant ever.

Called ahead to get the Peking duck. Explained I wanted the meat shredded with the pancakes.

Arrived and reminded 3 different people about how we wanted it. Paid a fortune for it. And we ended up with square skin pieces, pancakes, sauce and the rest of the duck..... God knows. All we received were some fried bone bits heavily fried in garlic and basil.

Tried to sort it. And received the typical excuses and the fact that if I refused to pay it would be taken out of the waiters pack package. I said ok, not my problem how they treat the staff. Then they refused to do anything.

    Never again.

Lovely place. Most dishes are lovely. But if you want duck, forget it. If you want service, forget it. Utter shit.

Is it me? or did you just get what you normally get when you order Peking Duck? It sounds to me like ordering a burger and have the meat shredded with the bun.... I wouldn't expect the burger joint to comply with such a request.

Peking Duck is one of my favorite dishes at Jia Tong Heng. I've had it many times and never any complaints. On top of that, you say you paid a fortune for it, I would think the price is very reasonable. Can you tell me any other restaurant that serves proper Peking Duck and charges less for it??

I paid for a full duck. And got a pile of bones fried. No meat!!

I had specifically requested that they serve us the roasted duck meat with the pancake stuff etc. we got no meat!

I had my wife call ahead to ask them if they can do that. They said yes. (I had two weeks earlier ordered it from the menu and got the pile of bones, to which they replied that's how they usually serve it. With guests with me the second time, I really wanted the lovely duck meat to put in the pancakes with everything else. Hence the phonecall to pre order it)

We told our waiting staff that we had called ahead, and explained once again that we do not want it how they usually serve it. We want the meat from the duck, not a plate of the bones. Ok. No problem.

When they served the pancakes and skin, we once again told them not to fry off the bones. Just bring us the duck meat, thanks.

    They brought the bones!!

And just in case you're confused. Check out the serving section of Wikipedia entry for Peking duck....

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peking_duck

It is very common to have a choice of how the meat is prepared and served. So, in answer to your question, yes, it's just you. They did not serve what I ordered.

In your burger example- if I walked into mcdonalds and asked for them to shred my burger, they indeed may not want to comply. In which case I'm sure they'd say so before serving me a regular burger. See the difference? We went out of our way to explain very clearly what we wanted. They had the opportunity on the phone and at the restaurant to say no, they don't serve it like that, but they didn't. To repeat my original comment. Sh!t service. And emotional oh the waiter will get deducted bs.

Enjoy your skin and bones, but it's not for me.

I pay for a full duck, I want the full duck. I don't want just the bones leaving them the meat that I paid for to be used by the restaurant in other meals!!!

  15. 3d printing is in it's infancy. I'm not aware of transparent materials useable just now, but they may be available on higher end printers.

One option, depending on how many times you've sat around wanting to make doo hickeys, you could always buy a cheap 3d printer yourself.

If you don't have the doo hickey all designed in 3d on a computer, you would either have to find a 3d scanner or model it in a 3d program, or pay someone to model it for you.

Regardless, materials aren't cheap yet for mass production. Depends on what you want to charge for what size if you intend to resell these things.

A small run could cost the same as a big run from china with a specialist company.

Anyway just some thoughts. Not sure if they're big enough to be out on their own, but there you go. Hehe.
