I got my driving license using original RC and photocopied the original.

Then I had the photocopy signed and stamped by the officer who got my original.

With the photocopy, I went to the motorbike dept and they were happy to accept it. Make sure it is signed and stamped.

It's best to go yourself to the motorbike registration dept to confirm what I've said.

Great! Thanks much for this info, very helpful.

  2. Work permits in Chiang Mai no longer include Thai residence/address address information. This leaves those of us in apartments (no access to a "Yellow Book" if I understand correctly) with the options of 1) waiting through the lengthy process of getting a residence certificate from Immigration, or 2) paying fees for the expedited service or for a Embassy/Consulate certificate.

My question is, will copies of Immigration or Consulate residence certificates be accepted by the DLT if we have the original with us? I ask because I'd like to pay Immigration or my Consulate to get a residence certificate in a timely manner. However, I need to transfer the ownership of 2 motorbikes into my name, and get my motorcycle/car driving license. I don't want to fork over the money only to find out I'll need 3-4 originals to get all of this done.

Has anyone been able to get a driving license and/or register motorbikes using 1 residence certificate?

  3. Any recent reports on getting residence certificates at Immigration since the changes? Last I heard it took 4-6 weeks to process (for free), or payment of 500-1000THB could produce it in 1-2 days. Can't find much on this since the change of procedures there.

  4. By "green book transfers" I mean transferring ownership of motorbikes, sorry. It is my understanding that work permits used to suffice for a foreigner's proof of residence (address in Thailand) when transferring vehicle ownership, or getting a Thai driving license. Now that our Thai address is not listed in the work permit it will not be accepted. This requires a trip to immigration for a residency certificate, which I was told will take a month to process for 100 baht, or 2-3 days to process for 500 baht. Once issued it is only good for 30 days. It's a real hassle for those of us that work all day M-F, as we need find time for 2 immigration visits - once for application, once for pickup. All this for a document that is only valid for a month. Not to mention the new immigration near the airport isn't super efficient...

  5. Yes, same here in Chiang Mai. Recently received work permit, does not include home address. Our HR head was surprised as well, and found out this is the way work permits are being issued starting this year.

It's a hassle for all new staff, as we all work full time M-F, and will now need to go through the extra hassle of getting residency certificates from immigration for things like driving licenses, green book transfers, etc.

Any ideas on alternatives to this would be much appreciated. Will 1 residency certificate suffice to make copies, or will a separate certificate be needed for each use?
