  1. Human bodies naturally NEED to exhale carbon dioxide and inhale for a basic reason.  I am sure that an interruption of this flow has negative consequences.  This is basic knowledge. So, why are medical experts mandating that healthy people wear masks over long periods of time when doing this is clearly detrimental to one's health.

I take this example as just one of the many seemingly insane, impractical and clearly detrimental orders from governments and public health agencies which seem contrary to a person's physical and mental health and for the health of economies.  This self-enforced destruction would not happen 50 to 60 plus years ago.  I find this very disturbing.

  2. Since this Covid crisis I have seen dramatic increase of stories in Thai language news organizations which discuss the increase and severity of recent stories of killing, suicide, alcohol and drug use and child abuse and death.  What stories and how graphically they are written in the Thai language is very different from what is reported in English. So I would say that the safety level in this country has changed.

  3. I recently heard a talk on Youtube by a VERY highly respected and placed monk on the topic of Karma.  I mention this because it might somewhat explain why Thais drive with such recklessness.

Anyways, to explain the power of Karma, this monk gave an example.  He said, "If someone chooses to drink alcohol, then ride a motorcycle or car and then get in accident while driving and then go to the hospital and then have a huge bill, the reason for this is that he had bad karma."

  4. Another commom mispronunciation by foreigners is of the Thai word for "Island."  Foreigners often say, "Ko" when the correct pronunciation is more like, "Goh."  I mention this only because saying this word like, "Ko" to Thais might be misunderstood. I am aware that most foreigners do not know Thai enough to know the correct pronunciation, they merely what they hear from other foreigns.  Having said all that, I am not including any members of TVF in this group.

  5. I have just a minor comment about the pronunciation of this word is "Sak Yan", not "Sak Yant."  There is no need for the "t" sound at the end of the word because the last letter in the Thai spelling is silent because there is a silencer mark (called a Garan) above the last letter.

  6. In terms of a useful book to use to begin learning Thai, I would suggest the Beginning Learner book (I forget the actual title) by Benjawan Poomsan Becker.  It is very helpful with pronunciation since it starts with vowel, consonant sound and words using English letters to approximate the proper pronunciation and acting as a kind of bridge to get the learner to know proper Thai. There is also audio CD.

As for working with a Thai person, I agree with choosing the patient and enthusiastic Thai person, perhaps a university student.

What a pointless topic in a Thai Forum!

Does the comment I have just made above "qualify" as "constructive criticism" or am I just showing my true feelings as to why it was started in the first place.

    Total pretentious waffle.

    ????

Thank you for your CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.  THIS is why wrote about this topic.

  8. While I can appreciated what this expert is saying, he seems to have very narrow definition of an "accident."  Roughly speaking, an accident is an unexpected and damaging collision while driving.   Though collisions between two or more cars is certainly bad, a collision with a barrier could be just as deadly if the car hits the barrier and rolls.  Driving safely seems to be the answer, not a barrier.
