  1. My best friend landed on the morning of the crackdown. If I didn't tell him what was going on, he never would have known about the riots in Bangkok. When he got on his plane, he had just heard about the ASEAN summit in Pattaya. If you plan to stay in Bangkok at all, avoid the government house and victory monument areas - stick to tourist areas. If you're not staying in Bangkok, I wouldn't even be concerned. Down south, you won't see any red shirts.

-Thanks everyone for all your help :o

I'm still wanting to make sure there is no travel restrictions to come in as I had read of some kind on other threads? and do we need to get any special visa for 3 weeks or do they still allow 1 month at the air port? we'll be in Bangkok for a few days before we train south to Krabi. But I'm sure we'll be fine so we'll leave our body armor here at home, our dog could use it.

Thanks again -W.L.T.V (we love Thai Visa)

  2. My Daughter's and I are thinking about traveling to S.Thailand in late June/July for 3 weeks, I realize it's impossible to know whats going to be happening exactly in 10 weeks but considering whats happening now is it or could it be safe for us ?

I'm also not clear about the restrictions to traveling to Thailand right now or if there is any?

Thanks so much - Sorry to hear about the trouble

    With your daughter's what? :o

But seriously, certain areas of Southern Thailand are no-go areas at all times. Outside of those areas, I don't think there is any special need for alarm, and certainly nothing connected to the current problems with the red/yellow shirts.

We're not going to Yala or that far south, I am a little worried about all the political problems going on there right now with tanks in the streets of Bangkok, fire bombs, rioting in the streets, and shootings.

Now don't get me wrong here, this kind of stuff happens right around us all the time here in the U.S. They now teach kid's in gym class how to dodge real bullets not rubber balls any more(you find out fast the shot guns are the hardest to dodge) :D .

So we would like to get away from all the loud sounds of automatic gunfire and rioting around here for a few weeks and we usually find Thailand so much safer and quieter (I've seen the stats that say otherwise they don't tell the whole story)but I've heard there are travel restrictions? besides the violence going on and I don't want my daughters afraid in Thailand (we can to Rio for that).

  4. Safer than any big city in the States. Moral is: Don't get into anything bigger than you.

    I could not agree more.......

I live in Seattle in the U.S and things like this (killings, rape,robbery,ect..)happen daily around here, every morning we watch the death count go on. When my daughters and I were in Bangkok last year we were very surprised to see a young teen girl selling marigolds flowers to taxi drivers at 4:00AM safe as could be.She wouldn't last an hour downtown here. we droped or left sunglasses, money, bags of clothes ect.. and time and time again a Thai came running up to us saying mister mister you dropped something, a rare thing here even with people that have money.

Now I know that I haven't posted a million plus times but Most if not every story I've read about people having problems in Thailand is they got either over their heads in some deal, got too drunk or just stupid and leave it up to Darwin.

    God rest their souls

  5. Snorkeling at Coral Island you will see only one type of fish, a small striped species that is there in massive numbers because the tourists are feeding them bread. You might contemplate going to Koh Racha instead, it is also quite close to Phuket.

Thanks for the ideas on Koh Racha, do you know if there are places to stay and snorkeling O.K ??

    - Any help is appreciated :o THANKS

  6. I have not been to any of the other islands you mentioned, but I have been to Coral Island and LOVED IT! I would recommend it. Its a nice place for families to go and it is very relaxing. I did some snorkeling there and I really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the reply. it looks really nice :D Just wondering if you know if there is any thing else on the Island, shops, restaurant or ??

    THANKS AGAIN :o

  7. My kid's and I are traveling to Phuket later this month for a week and woud like to find somewhere a little quiter to relax and do some diving. I’ve heard Coral Island is very nice, we thought Koh Chang /Koh Wai might be a little far (is it?) all idea’s are welcome- :o

  8. Flight of the Gibbons (see pinned thread: days out):
For those who love to play Tarzan or Jane, The Flight of the Gibbon (a rainforest canopy ecotour) might be a worthy daytrip.

They have build several platforms high up in the canopy where you glide along cables from one platform to the other, while on a safety line and under close supervision of two guides all the time.

It is located approximately 37 km from Chiang Mai at the village of Mae Kompong on the edge of a beautiful national park.

You can go there as a one-day trip or stay overnight.

Check out their website www.treetopasia.com and for more info: http://www.ecospace.cc/travel/rainforest-c...y-tour-0108.htm

Costs if booked online were a little less than 1700 bhat pp, and on request they collect from and bring back to your hotel/GH.

    Nienke

Thanks for all the help folks, the flight of the gibbons looks fun and I dont think the kids can find it boring
