I completely agree with you. I have no issue with Thais who substitute “r” sounds with “l”. It’s ingrained in the culture. The situation you described for yourself is also normal. You want to blend in. what annoys me is when someone on this forum without the context of the situation you’ve described uses falang instead of farang. It tells me they either have no clue about the Thai language and have no desire to learn, they’re just trying to be cute, or both. But as an Isaan resident I have no issue with what you’ve described. I often do it myself.

As I stated in my post, it is pronounced that way by many Thais. But that doesn’t change the fact that the word has an “r” sound and not an “l” (the Thai word is “ฝรั่ง” not “ฝลั่ง”). So if you’re going to transliterate it, you should do it correctly.

I’m offended that you can’t transliterate the word properly. It’s farang (ฝรั่ง) with an “r” sound not an “l”. Do some Thais pronounce it that way. Yes. Mainly in Isaan where you have a mixture of Thai and Laos languages (Laos dropped the “r” sound from their alphabet about 50 years ago so many times they substitute “l” for “r”). I’m assuming you were not born and raised in isaan, so why do you insist on this wrong transliteration? You even have it wrong in your username. If you’re going to use the word then at the very least use it correctly.

If this doesn’t warrant use of the death penalty then they should just do away with it. Murder such as this where there is 100% proof of what happened should always result in the death penalty. I watched the video clip of this which is disturbing and sickening. The shooter empties his gun at point blank range into the victim then calmly strolls to his motorbike and rides to his mother’s house. But unfortunately, he’ll wai and grovel, get a life sentence, and be out in 5 years to kill again when he feels someone has crossed him.
