Funny how everyone hates 'Big Joke'. Even when he does something good (like ridding this country of pedos), he's hardly given credit for it. The headline for this article in Naew Na is 'บิ๊กโจ๊ก'ลุยหนองคายนำทีมบุกจับเฒ่าอังกฤษล่วงละเมิดทางเพศเด็กไม่เกิน 15 -- "'Big Joke' goes to Nong Khai, leads the team to catch an old Englishman for sexually abusing children up to 15" -- but ASEAN NOW drops "Big Joke" from the headline. Why is that? I'd go with "Big Joke Busts Brit Pedo In Nong Khai"

Say what you will about the quality of the vaccine, they are giving it to rich Thais heading to Europe ahead of local Thais--or expats. Won't do anything to quell the sh*tstorm here.

There's a moral hazard argument to be made (which I am sure no one in this forum will like) that runs like this: the more that banks are insured against losses, the more likely they are to behave recklessly or take unnecessary risks--because they know they will be bailed out. (The classic example of moral hazard is the "too big to fail" financial institutions in the United States.) On the other hand, if bank insurance is kept to a minimum, then banks are incentivized to behave responsibly--and not fail. Or if a bank does behave irresponsibly, it is allowed to fail. No government bailout. As for the people who lose money in that bank, well, they chose the wrong bank to put their money in. Caveat emptor. That is the theory at least--just putting it out there.

This is a good question and I agree with the reasoning behind it. But I stopped asking this question a long time ago after getting the same kind of BS responses you are receiving now. "My great wealth is tied up in investments in my home country"?! Hilarious! "Thai banks aren't trustworthy" Well, the THB is doing a lot better than the GBP--someone must trust Thai banks. And on and on and on.
Now, of course I have sympathy for people in bad situations but for people in bad situations who break the law I have a bit less sympathy. The Thai government is cracking down on people who don't meet the clearly stated visa requirements--and why shouldn't they? Name any other country on earth--including these people's home countries--that would allow people who don't obey immigration laws to live there? Or who don't view the people who break those laws as criminals? Now I'll sit back and enjoy the rage, accusations of heartless, the "Just wait! It'll happen to you someday!" (no it won't) and all the other nonsense replies to this post. Cheers!

Real headline: Rich guy buys new shoes for student
What kind of society do we want to live in? One that pays people a living wage? Or one in which rich people buy shoes for random people? We want shoes from rich people! ????

You need to apply for an ITIN for her (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number). I got one for my Thai wife. Now we file a joint return and I get double the deductions.

Before COVID came I was already thinking that the stock market would crash before the end of this year so, when the market was hitting record highs, I was already cashing out in preparation for a year or two of recession. From that point of view I couldn't have timed it better. Only thing I'm hoping for now is the USD to strengthen a bit against the THB.

Yes, like you, I have been in Asia for 30 years: From 1990 to 2006 in Japan; from 2006 to the present here in Thailand. There is the moment when you cross that line, when you notice you have spent more years outside of the States than in it and you realize that the United States is a foreign country to you now and that Thailand is your home. How does it feel? Not bad. There's no other place I'd rather be now. I'm not sad for those stranded here. I'm sad for those locked out.
Or in words you might be better able to understand:
But the funniest thing was as I was leaving the bay
I saw three ships sailing and they were all headed my way
I asked the captain what his name was and how come he didn't drive a truck
He said his name was Columbus and I just said Good luck!- 1

I think that is good advice. Yesterday I did my yearly extension of stay based on retirement (Songkhla Immigration, Hat Yai), and just before handing my passport back, the immigration officer checked the 90-day report receipt and reminded me that my next report is due in one month.
Have you ever done your 90 day reporting online for Hat Yai Immigration? I plan to try it next month.

Do you mean weed addicts? Otherwise, the comparison is between weed smokers and alcohol drinkers (not alcoholics). Substance abuse is a whole other issue.

It's not about not being able to go without a drink. Governments aren't supposed to govern based on what people can "go without". What are you? A child? And happy to have a paternalistic state tell you what you can and cannot do? F--- that. I'm an adult. I can have a glass of wine with dinner. If people get drunk and cause a ruckus, the state has a right to deal with them. But I have a right to choose what I drink with dinner.

Of course if it's abused it will be quickly brought back.
The news in English is ambiguous but what I'm hearing from Thai sources is that it will be for one day only: Sunday the 3rd.

I have found that to be true too. Mini Big-G wanted to see my passport, so I just strolled across the street to 7-11. Never had a problem since.

"Tourists" lining up for free food and people who criticise that accused of discrimination? Thai embassies and consulates *should* discriminate between those who can afford to visit Thailand and those who can't. Don't these people travel with cards that an ATM would accept? Do they have no one who can wire money to them? Why are they engaged in global tourism then? What are they? Begpackers? I wouldn't be surprised if many of the "tourists" in these food lines--in Phuket, Bangkok & Pattaya--are of the brokedick expat variety. COVID-19 is the best thing to ever happen to them. Free food and the excuse that they can't go home because the country is on lockdown. It's shameless enough to live on handouts in your own country but in a developing country, where there are people who are genuinely poor? Shameless beyond belief.
