  1. Can anyone tell me if Chow Wattana still has a car rental desk at the Ubon airport. We used them a few years ago and are planning on using them again this year in early June for several days. Thank you for any information

  2. It isn't paying to work. It is paying for position. Now you know how the police works.

How does the average Thai ever get a job? My Wife has two Sisters who also have lived in the US over 40 years. About 15 years ago their Father divided up the rice field acerage and was going to put equal parts into all of the childrens names. The 3 sisters here told him just didvide it all up between the 4 still in Thailand Unfortunately over time the two brothers have sold most of it off. Had we held on to it they would still have a revenue source

  3. Need the opinions of residents living in LOS as to the extent of this behavior. A nephew of ours who graduated from college and was recently dischrged from the Thai Army has been accepted for Police training. As my Wife understands it with his education and Military experience He will enter training to be something higher ranking than just a Patrol officer. The training is at no cost to him but he'll need to come up with 255000 Bt before he can go to work. A little background on my Wife and me. We've been married 39 years and have willingly helped the Family on numerous occasions.either with buying rice fields education or fixing the House so it's not the Mamasan and Papasan need a new Water Buffalo scenario.

  4. Woraburi Hotel, farther down Soi 4. Majestic Grande on Soi 2 is nice as well, short walk to BTS as well.

do you know that this was just named one of Asia's Top Ten Dirtiest Hotels (click on Asia Pacific) by Trip Advisor?

    just sayin'...

now i want to stay in the 'first hotel' out of curiosity

friends of mine stayed in the woraburi without looking for advice from me in advance and they had no major complaints

We've stayed at the First Hotel on numerous occasions and have never experienced the problems described. That said we always book the deluxe rooms in the Tower wing. 1700 bt as opposed to the 1200 bt for Standard rooms in the older Main Wing. Plan on booking into it again in May

  5. Where exactly is it in UBON, Is it near the bus terminal on Rd 231? We will be staying at the Sunee Hotel in May and would like to take in at least one evening of drinking and Morlum. Songtaews run by the hotel but whats the chances of catching one back later in the night.

  6. I tried crickets twice near Saraburi. They tasted of sesame oil, so I guess they were fried in it, or more likely, tossed in it afterwards. I didn’t like them, but they weren’t as bad as I expected. I’d eat them again, but only for a suitably appreciative audience. :)

I find the stir-fried crickets not unlike sunflower seeds amd the silk worm larva akin to a soft lima bean. Anyway thats what I tell myself. I thought I was pretty Issan eating a few of each until my wife's sister handed me a BIG handful of the larva. Ummm all at once? I don't think so.

  7. Ubon International Hotel (formerly Nevada Grand) might have the best location in Ubon. If you want western food you will find it all in the complex. Chesters Grill, S&P Bakery, Black Canyon and Starbucks. For entertainment there is The Rock Disco, Karaoke, Theater, DNA Pub, Friends Bar (formerly Zodiac Pub but now only DJ). Tommy has left UI and returned to Pataya.

IMHO the published room rates are not justified. For that rate you would be better offer going to Sunee Grand hotel http://www.suneegrandhotel.com and get a new superior room for 1500TB. However at the UI website the English gives one rate but if you look at the Thai version of rates page, at the bottom in Thai the red print states, "40% discount if book in advance except during high season. If you want to be in the action and conveniet to certain places it is good.

A lot has been invested in the complex, however the hotel itself needs some maintenance, upgrading and even rennovation.

My Wife, 2 Daughters and I are planning to spend 2 days in Ubon in mid October We're going to the village near Sisaket where my wife grew up and the oldests daughter lived until age 3 for a day and also visit family in a cluster of homes South of Det Udom. Our plan is to rent 3 or 4 rooms at either the Sunee Grand or Ubon International and have Family members stay with us in the evenings and overnight. The water park at Sunee looks great for the kids as does the entertainment complex at the Ubon International. Are the 2 within walking distance of each other? Whenever we're in Thailand we WALK Walk and Walk some more. Last trip to Ubon we stayed at the Tohsang and loved the Hotel but didn't like the isolated feel of it. My wifes family has never really experienced city sites. so this would be a big treat for them and a Tawan Daeng club or place to have a drink listening to ISSAN music or singers would be up my alley. Any recomendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Thanks for the post! I'm a big fan of Anthony Bourdain. His show is hilarious. I love the episode that he went to China and somewhere in South America where he took some peyote to trip on purpose. Awesome!

I think the same South America episode he was on a boat going up river and commented on it being his Kurtz moment as Col Kurtz in the movie Apocalypse Now

  9. Anyone know what the wieght allowances are for baggage. We're travelling to Sisaket next week Either by Air Asia to Ubon or train. Bringing extra clothing and assorted goodies for the family I'm concerned about weight limits. Air Asia only allow 15 kilos I can't find any online info about trains though. Thanks for any info.

  10. I've stayed at that resort...it's very nice in itself, but a LONG way from anything else...

I'd say a 45+ minute walk to the main areas, up and down hilly, non-paved roads with bikers & pick-ups coming along relatively frequently.

Thanks for the info. I know my wife would be a little moho if she had to walk 45 minutes each way more than once. If you had said 15 minutes I'd say no problem. We'll probably get something further up the Island.

  11. We plan on spending a couple days on Koh Samet at the end of our trip next month. Considering staying at the Nimmanordee Resort at Ao Pakarang on Southern tip of the island. It sounds like a pretty quiet spot so if we decide to walk up to other beaches how far or long to say Ao Wong Duen. We considered Wong Duen Resort on Ao Wong Duen or Samet Ville on Ao Wai but concerned about too much crowds and activity even though we are looking at Tuesday-Thurs . Walking doesn't bother either of us as usually in Bangkok we walk all around Pratunam and when upcountry near Sisaket walk all over the place.

  12. Greetings. We're planning to visit my wifes family in Ban Chan which is just south of Kantharaom. We plan on staying in Sisaket and renting 4 or 5 rooms so family members from surrouding areas can also visit. I was looking at the Kessiri Hotel because it has a swimming pool and includes breakfast. but because the total for 4 nights would approach $700 I decided maybe not. Last trip 2 1/2 years ago we stayed at the Prompiman which was fine IMO. Plus there was close proximity to the market and now that I have a Sisaket map I see it's walking distance to a number of eating places ie Sugar Pub. I see theres a SP Botique at 300 baht and a North East at 350 baht also listed. The Prompiman is listed at 400 baht but 2 years ago my wife checked with front desk and insisted on a deluxe room which was I believe 800 baht. I guess I'm looking for any pros or cons against any of these choices. The pool would be nice for the kids but I see Surin has a water park we could take the kids to possibly with the money saved not staying at the Kessir . Mostof my wifes family have lived out in the sticks their entire life so a stay in a hotel in the city will be a big experience to them. Thanks for any advice.
